TURIST SERIES

The Turist series consists of shallow, well drained soils that formed in residuum from sandstone of the Schnebly Hill Formation on hills and buttes. Slopes range from 3 to 90 percent. The mean annual precipitation is about 18 inches and the mean annual air temperature is about 60 degrees F.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Loamy-skeletal, mixed, superactive, thermic Aridic Lithic Haplustepts

TYPICAL PEDON: Turist extremely channery sandy loam - urbanland. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted.)

A--0 to 2 inches; red (2.5YR 4/6) extremely channery sandy loam, dark red (2.5YR 3/6) moist; weak thin platy parting to moderate fine subangular blocky structure; soft, very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; common very fine roots; common very fine tubular pores; 5 percent flagstones, 60 percent channers; strongly effervescent; moderately alkaline (pH 8.0); clear smooth boundary. (1 to 4 inches thick)

Bw--2 to 12 inches; red (2.5YR 4/6) extremely channery loam, dark red (2.5YR 3/6) moist; strong very fine subangular blocky structure; soft, very friable, slightly sticky and moderately plastic; many very fine and fine and common medium roots; few very fine tubular pores; 10 percent flagstones, 65 percent channers; few faint coats of calcium carbonate on undersides of rock fragments; violently effervescent; moderately alkaline (pH 8.4); clear smooth boundary. (9 to 12 inches thick)

Bk--12 to 18 inches; red (2.5YR 5/6) extremely channery loam, red (2.5YR 4/6) moist; weak fine subangular blocky structure; soft, very friable, slightly sticky and moderately plastic; common fine roots; few fine tubular pores; 15 percent flagstones, 65 percent channers; common distinct coats of calcium carbonate on undersides of rock fragments; violently effervescent; moderately alkaline (pH 8.4); abrupt irregular boundary. (5 to 10 inches thick)

2R--18 inches; hard sandstone of the Schenbly Hill Formation.

COMPETING SERIES: There are no competing series.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Turist soils are on hills and buttes at elevations of 3,700 to 5,500 feet. Slopes range from 3 to 90 percent. These soils formed in residuum and colluvium from the Schenbly Hill Formation. The mean annual precipitation is 16 to 20 inches. The mean annual air temperature is 57 to 60 degrees F. The frost-free period is 180 to 220 days.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Wheels and Sedona soils. Sedona soils have argillic horizons and Wheels soils do not have cambic horizons.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; rapid to very rapid runoff; moderate permeability.

USE AND VEGETATION: Used for wildlife habitat and urban land. Vegetation includes manzanita, ceanothus, silktassel, sideoats grama, yucca, agave, pinyon pine, and one seed juniper.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Central Arizona. Turist soils are of very limited extent. MLRA is 38.
