TYPICAL PEDON: Turpentine ashy silt loam - woodland, on a 34 percent, planar, south-facing slope at an elevation of 5,070 feet. (Colors are for moist soil unless otherwise noted. Soil textures are apparent field textures.)
Oi--0 to 2 inches; needles, twigs, wood and logs
A--2 to 5 inches; dark brown (7.5YR 3/4) ashy silt loam, light brown (7.5YR 6/3) dry; weak very fine subangular blocky structure; soft, very friable, nonsticky, nonplastic and weakly smeary; common very fine and few fine roots throughout; common very fine irregular pores; neutral (pH 6.8); clear wavy boundary. (3 to 4 inches thick)
Bw1--5 to 15 inches; brown (7.5YR 4/4) ashy silt loam, light brown (7.5YR 6/4) dry; weak medium subangular blocky structure; soft, very friable, nonsticky, nonplastic and weakly smeary; common very fine, fine and few medium roots throughout; common very fine irregular pores; neutral (pH 6.8); clear wavy boundary.
Bw2--15 to 24 inches; yellowish brown (10YR 5/6) ashy silt loam, very pale brown (10YR 8/4) dry; moderate, medium subangular blocky structure; soft, very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; few very fine, fine, medium and coarse roots throughout; few very fine irregular pores; neutral (pH 6.8); abrupt wavy boundary. (Combined thickness of the Bw horizons is 17 to 22 inches)
2AEb--24 to 28 inches; brown (7.5YR 4/3) sandy loam, light brown (7.5YR 6/4) dry; moderate medium subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, friable, slightly sticky and nonplastic; few very fine, fine and medium roots throughout; few fine irregular and tubular pores; 10 percent gravel and 2 percent cobbles; neutral (pH 6.8) clear wavy boundary. 2Btb--28 to 40 inches; yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) gravelly sandy loam, pale brown (10YR 6/3) dry; strong medium subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, friable, slightly sticky and nonplastic; few very fine, fine and medium roots throughout; few fine irregular and common fine tubular pores; common distinct clay films on ped faces and bridges between mineral grains; 15 percent gravel and 2 percent cobbles; neutral (pH 6.7) clear wavy boundary. (5 to 15 inches thick)

Jacot - greater than 70 inches to a paralithic contact; ashy part of pscs has 40 to 60 percent glass; loamy part of pscs is very strongly acid to slightly acid; argillic horizon has 3 to 30 percent rock fragments of gneiss or granite origin; has unweathered, loamy sand, loamy coarse sand or coarse sand 2C horizons below the argillic horizon and within 60 inches of the mineral surface
Mackatie - ashy part of pscs is 14 to 20 inches thick and has 30 to 50 percent glass; loamy part of pscs is 25 to 35 percent clay; argillic horizon has rock fragments of andesite origin.
Secunda soils - greater than 70 inches to a paralithic contact; ashy part of pscs is 14 to 21 inches thick and has 15 to 60 percent glass; loamy part of pscs has less than 15 percent very coarse and coarse sand with greater than 40 percent fine and very fine sand, it has rock fragments of phyllite or quartzite origin.
Tamara - greater than 70 inches to a paralithic contact; ashy part of pscs has 10 to 25 percent glass; loamy part of pscs is 20 to 35 percent clay and 5 to 30 percent rock fragments of basalt origin.
Tomodo - greater than 70 inches to a paralithic contact; has fragic characteristics, 2Btx horizon, at depth of 20 to 51 inches; ashy part of pscs is 14 to 20 inches thick and has 15 to 50 percent glass; loamy part of pscs is moderately acid or strongly acid;

USE AND VEGETATION:
Use: timber production, watershed, recreation and wildlife habitat.
Native vegetation: grand fir, western larch, lodgepole pine, Englemann spruce, Douglas fir, Pacific yew, grouse huckleberry, twinflower, Oregon boxwood, big huckleberry, common prince's pine, pinemat manzanita, sidebells pyrola, queens cup beadlily, roundleaf violet, woods strawberry, trail plant, heartleaf arnica, common wintergreen, sweet cicely, Columbia brome, pinegrass and northwest sedge.
