TYRO SERIES

The Tyro series consists of very shallow and shallow over duripan, somewhat excessively drained soils on pediments. These soils formed in alluvium from mixed igneous and metamorphic rocks. Slopes range from 2 to 35 percent. The mean annual precipitation is about 5 inches. The mean annual air temperature is about 74 degrees F.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Loamy-skeletal, mixed, superactive, hyperthermic, shallow Typic Haplodurids

TYPICAL PEDON: Tyro very gravelly sandy loam - rangeland and wildlife habitat. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted.)

A--0 to 1 inch; pale brown (10YR 6/3) very gravelly sandy loam, brown (10YR 4/3) moist; moderate fine granular structure; soft, very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; common very fine roots; common very fine irregular pores; 50 percent gravel; strongly effervescent; moderately alkaline (pH 8.0); abrupt smooth boundary. (1 to 3 inches thick)

Bk1--1 to 6 inches; light brown (7.5YR 6/4) very gravelly sandy loam, brown (7.5YR 5/4) moist; weak fine subangular blocky structure; soft, very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; common fine roots; common very fine irregular pores; few distinct calcium carbonate coatings as pendants on undersides of rock fragments; 50 percent gravel; violently effervescent; moderately alkaline (pH 8.0); abrupt smooth boundary. (3 to 9 inches thick)

Bk2--6 to 9 inches; pinkish white (7.5YR 8/2) very gravelly coarse sandy loam, light brown (7.5YR 6/4) moist; common fine subangular blocky structure; extremely hard, firm, nonsticky and nonplastic; many prominent medium and large calcium carbonate nodules, common prominent calcium carbonate coatings on gravel; 35 percent gravel; violently effervescent; moderately alkaline (pH 8.0); abrupt smooth boundary. (3 to 8 inches thick)

2Bkqm--9 to 14 inches; indurated duripan with laminar cap and troweled surface. (2 to 20 inches thick)

3R--14 inches; conglomerate.

TYPE LOCATION: Mohave County, Arizona; 1650 feet south and 1300 feet west of the northwest corner of section 7, T.24 N., R.21 W. Gila and Salt River Base Meridian. Latitude of 35 degrees, 27 minutes, 06 seconds north and a longitude of 114 degrees, 33 minutes, 24 seconds west.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS:

Soil moisture: Intermittently moist in some part of the soil moisture control section during December - February and for less than 20 days cumulative during and July - September. Driest during May and June. Typic aridic soil moisture regime.

Soil temperature: 72 to 80 degrees F.

Depth to bedrock: 7 to 19 inches

Reaction: slightly or moderately alkaline

Rock fragments: 35 to 80 percent gravel, cobble, and/or hardpan fragments

Organic matter content: less than 1 percent

Clay content: averages less than 18 percent clay in the particle-size control section

Depth to duripan: 5 to 19 inches

Calcium carbonate equivalent: 15 to 35 percent in the calcic horizon

A horizon

Hue: 7.5YR, 10YR

Value: 5 or 6 dry, 4 or 5 moist

Chroma: 3 or 4, dry or moist

Calcium carbonate equivalent: 5 to 15 percent

Bk horizon

Hue: 7.5YR, 10YR

Value: 5 through 8 dry, 4 through 6 moist

Chroma: 2 through 4, dry or moist

Calcium carbonate equivalent: 15 to 40 percent

A Bw horizon may be present in some pedons with similar characteristics to the Bk with fewer carbonates

COMPETING SERIES: These are the Cheme (NV), Cherioni (AZ) and Cipriano (AZ) series. The Cheme soils do not have bedrock within the control section. Cherioni and Cipriano soils are intermittently moist in some part of the soil moisture control section for more than 20 days cumulative during July-September.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Tyro soils are on pediments. Slopes range from 2 to 35 percent. They formed in mixed igneous and metamorphic alluvium. Elevation ranges from 900 to 3,000 feet. The mean annual precipitation is 3 to 6 inches. The mean annual air temperature is 70 to 78 degrees F. The frost-free period is 250 to 325 days.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Sunrock, Huevi, and Carrizo soils. Sunrock soils do not have a duripan. Huevi and Carrizo soils are very deep.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Somewhat excessively drained; medium to very high runoff; moderately rapid permeability.

USE AND VEGETATION: Tyro soils are used for recreation and wildlife habitat. Vegetation includes creosotebush, white ratany, white brittlebush and red brome.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Northwestern Arizona. This series is of moderate extent. MLRA is 30.
