WAGONBOW SERIES

The Wagonbow series consists of very deep, well drained soils that formed in alluvium and colluvium from volcanics on hills and mountains. Slopes range from 15 to 25 percent. The mean annual precipitation is about 14 inches and the mean annual air temperature is about 59 degrees F.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine, smectitic, thermic Ustertic Haplocambids

TYPICAL PEDON: Wagonbow very stony clay loam - rangeland. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted.)

A1--0 to 3 inches; brown (10YR 4/3) very stony clay loam, dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) moist; moderate fine granular structure; hard, firm, moderately sticky and moderately plastic; many very fine roots; many very fine irregular pores; 20 percent stone, 20 percent cobble and 20 percent gravel; few shrinkage cracks; noneffervescent; slightly alkaline (pH 7.8); abrupt smooth boundary. (1 to 5 inches thick)

A2--3 to 6 inches; brown (10YR 4/3) cobbly clay loam, brown (10YR 4/3) moist; moderate very fine subangular blocky structure; hard, firm, moderately sticky and moderately plastic; many very fine roots; common very fine tubular pores; 20 percent cobble; few shrinkage cracks; noneffervescent; slightly alkaline (pH 7.8); clear wavy boundary. (0 to 4 inches thick)

Bw1--6 to 26 inches; brown (10YR 4/3) silty clay, brown (10YR 4/3) moist; moderate medium prismatic structure parting to strong medium subangular blocky; very hard, very firm, very sticky and very plastic; few very fine roots; few very fine tubular pores; 10 percent cobble; common pressure faces; few slickensides; few shrinkage cracks; slightly effervescent; slightly alkaline (pH 7.8); gradual wavy boundary.

Bw2--26 to 50 inches; brown (7.5YR 5/4) silty clay, brown (7.5YR 4/4) moist; moderate medium prismatic structure parting to strong medium subangular blocky; very hard, very firm, very sticky and very plastic; few very fine roots; few very fine tubular pores; 5 percent gravel; common pressure faces; few slickensides; slightly effervescent; slightly alkaline (pH 7.8); abrupt wavy boundary. (Combined thickness of the Bw horizons is 15 to 40 inches thick)

C--50 to 60 inches; yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) very gravelly clay loam, dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4) moist; massive; hard, firm, moderately sticky and moderately plastic; few very fine roots; common very fine tubular pores; 40 percent gravel; slightly effervescent; moderately alkaline (pH 8.0).

COMPETING SERIES: There are no competing series.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Wagonbow soils are on hills and mountains at elevations of 3,800 to 5,200 feet. Slopes range from 15 to 25 percent. These soils formed in alluvium and colluvium from volcanic rocks. The mean annual precipitation is 12 to 16 inches. The mean annual air temperature is 57 to 61 degrees F. The frost-free period is 180 to 210 days.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Chiricahua, Gonzales, Lampshire and Romero soils. Chiricahua, Romero, Gonzales and Lampshire soils are shallow to bedrock.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; high runoff; slow permeability.

USE AND VEGETATION: Used for livestock grazing and wildlife habitat. Vegetation includes sideoats grama, desert needlegrass, black grama, true mountain mahogany, desert ceanothus and turbinella oak.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Northwestern Arizona. This series is of moderate extent. MLRA is 38. The name is from a local ranch.
