WOODPASS SERIES

The Woodpass series consists of very deep, well drained soils that formed in alluvium derived mainly from sandstone and limestone. These soils are on alluvial fans and uplands and have slopes of 2 to 8 percent. Mean annual temperature is about 40 degrees F., and the average annual precipitation is 11 inches.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine-loamy, mixed, superactive, frigid Xeric Haplocambids

TYPICAL PEDON: Woodpass loam - on a 4 percent slightly convex, north-east-facing slope in rangeland. (When described the soil was dry throughout. Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted.)

All--0 to 4 inches; brown (7.5YR 5/4) loam, dark yellowish brown (10YR 3/4) moist; weak medium subangular blocky structure parting to weak fine granular, soft, very friable, common fine and medium roots, 5 percent gravel; moderately alkaline (pH 8.0); clear wavy boundary. (2 to 8 inches thick)

A12--4 to 11 inches, brown (7.5YR 5/4) loam, dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4) moist; weak fine and medium subangular blocky structure parting to weak fine granular, soft, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; common fine and medium roots; 5 percent gravel; noncalcareous; moderately alkaline (pH 8.1); clear wavy boundary. (0 to 7 inches thick)

B2--11 to 20 inches; light brown (7.5YR 6/4) loam, brown (10YR 5/3) moist; moderate fine and medium subangular blocky structure; hard, firm, sticky and plastic; few fine and medium roots; common fine pores; 5 percent gravel; strongly calcareous (18 percent CaC03), carbonate disseminated; strongly alkaline (pH 8.6); clear wavy boundary. 94 to 13 inches thick)

C1--20 to 38 inches; pink (7.5YR 7/4) loam, pale brown (10YR 6/3) moist; moderate fine and medium subangular blocky structure; extremely hard, firm, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; few fine roots; common fine pores; ln percent gravel; strongly calcareous (24 percent CaC03), carbonate disseminated, strongly alkaline (pH 8.5); gradual wavy boundary. (12 to 30 inches thick)

C2--38 to 52 inches; pink (7.5YR 7/4) loam, light yellowish brown (10YR 6/4) moist, weak medium subangular blocky structure; soft, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; few fine roots; 10 percent gravel; strongly calcareous (23 percent CaC03), carbonate disseminated; strongly alkaline (pH 8.5); gradual wavy boundary. (11 to 28 inches thick)

C3--52 to 60 inches; pinkish white (7.5YR 8/2) loam, light yellowish brown (10YR 6/4) moist; weak medium subangular blocky structure; slightly plastic; few fine roots; 5 percent gravel; strongly calcareous, carbonate disseminated; strongly alkaline (pH 8.8).

TYPE LOCATION: Rich County, Utah; about 4.5 miles east and 2.5 miles north of Woodruff; 2,500 feet south and 1,700 feet east of the NW corner of sec. 31, T. 10 N., R. 8 E.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: The thickness of the solum ranges from 10 to 20 inches. The particle-size control section has 18 to 32 percent clay. The surface layer is free of carbonates to a depth of 7 to 12 inches. The mean annual soil temperature is 40 to 43 degrees F., and the mean summer soil temperature is 60 to 63 degrees F. These soils are dry in all parts 50 to 55 percent of the time that the soil temperature at a depth of 20 inches is warmer than 41 degrees F.

The A horizon has hue of 10YR or 7.5YR, value of 4 or 5 dry, 3 or 4 moist and chroma of 2 through 4 moist and dry. It is mildly alkaline or moderately alkaline.

The B horizon has hue of 10YR or 7.5YR, value of 5 or 6 dry, 4 or 5 moist, and chroma of 3 or 4 moist and dry. It commonly is loam or clay loam and less commonly silt loam and silty clay loam. It is moderately alkaline or strongly alkaline.

The C horizon has dominant hue of 10YR, but ranges from 7.5YR through 2.5Y, value of 7 or 8 dry, 4 through 7 moist, and chroma of 2 through 4 moist and dry. It commonly is loam or clay loam and less commonly silt loam or silty clay loam. In some pedons there are stratified layers of loamy coarse sand below a depth of 40 inches. This horizon is moderately calcareous or strongly calcareous.

COMPETING SERIES: This is the Cleek series. Cleek soils have more than 15 percent exchangeable sodium in the control section.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Woodpass soils are on alluvial fans and uplands at elevations of 6,300 feet to 6,900 feet. Slope ranges from 2 to 8 percent. The soils formed in alluvial material derived mainly from sandstone and limestone. the climate is arid. The average annual precipitation is 10 to 12 inches, the mean annual temperature is 38 to 41 degrees F., and the mean summer temperature is 58 to 61 degrees F. Freeze-free season is 55 to 75 days.

ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Cowco, Bereniceton, Pancheri, and Zagg soils. Cowco and Bereniceton soils lack a calcic horizon. Pancheri soils have less than 18 percent clay in the particle-size control section. Zagg soils have more than 35 percent clay in the particle-size control section.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; medium runoff; moderately slow permeability.

USE AND VEGETATION: Used mainly for rangeland. The native vegetation is big sagebrush, bluebunch wheatgrass, lanceleaf yellowbrush, phlox and pricklypear.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Woodpass soils occur in northeastern Utah. They are of moderate extent. Series Established: Rich County, Utah, 1980.
