ZANEIS SERIES
The Zaneis series consists of deep, well drained soils that formed in material weathered from interbedded sandstone and shale of Permian age. These soils are on crests and side slopes of low hills in the Central Rolling Red Prairies (MLRA 80A). Slope ranges from 0 to 8 percent. Mean annual air temperature is 16 degrees C (61 degrees F), and mean annual precipitation is 860 millimeters (34 in).
TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine-loamy, siliceous, active, thermic Udic Argiustolls
TYPICAL PEDON: Zaneis loam--tallgrass hay meadow, at an elevation of 357 m (1170 ft). (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise stated.)
Ap--0 to 15 cm (0 to 6 in); brown (7.5YR 4/2) loam, dark brown (7.5YR 3/2) moist; weak medium platy structure parting to weak fine granular; slightly hard, very friable; many very fine and few fine roots; many very fine and fine continuous tubular pores; moderately acid; abrupt smooth boundary. (Thickness of the Ap horizon is 0 to 25 cm [0 to 10 in])
A--15 to 30 cm (6 to 12 in); brown (7.5YR 4/2) loam, dark brown (7.5YR 3/2) moist; weak fine subangular blocky structure parting to moderate fine granular; slightly hard, very friable; many very fine and few fine roots; many very fine and fine continuous tubular pores; moderately acid; clear smooth boundary. (Thickness of the A horizon is 10 to 36 cm [4 to 14 in])
BA--30 to 48 cm (12 to 19 in); brown (7.5YR 4/3) loam, dark brown (7.5YR 3/3) moist; weak fine prismatic structure parting to weak fine subangular blocky; hard, firm; many very fine and few fine and medium roots; common very fine and fine continuous tubular pores; moderately acid; gradual smooth boundary. (0 to 18 cm [0 to 7 inches] thick)
Bt1--48 to 79 cm (19 to 31 in); brown (7.5YR 5/3) clay loam, brown (7.5YR 4/3) moist; moderate medium prismatic structure parting to moderate medium blocky; very hard, very firm; many very fine and few fine roots; common very fine and fine continuous tubular pores; common distinct continuous clay films on vertical and horizontal faces; slightly acid; gradual wavy boundary.
Bt2--79 to 99 cm (31 to 39 in); reddish brown (5YR 5/4) sandy clay loam, reddish brown (5YR 4/4) moist; common medium distinct red (2.5YR 4/6)iron stains; moderate coarse prismatic structure parting to moderate medium blocky; very hard, very firm; common very fine roots; common very fine and fine continuous tubular pores; common distinct continuous clay films on vertical and horizontal faces; few fine iron-manganese concretions; moderately acid; gradual wavy boundary.
Bt3--99 to 122 cm (39 to 48 in); yellowish red (5YR 5/6) sandy clay loam, yellowish red (5YR 4/6) moist; common coarse prominent olive yellow (5Y 6/6), reddish brown (2.5YR 5/4), and brown (7.5YR 5/3) redox concentrations; common fine iron-manganese concretions; weak coarse prismatic structure parting to weak medium subangular blocky; hard, firm; common very fine roots; many very fine and common fine continuous tubular pores; common distinct discontinuous clay films on vertical and horizontal faces; brown (7.5YR 4/3) material in root channels; slightly acid; gradual wavy boundary.
Bt4--122 to 140 cm (48 to 55 in); red (2.5YR 5/6) sandy clay loam, red (2.5YR 4/6) moist; common medium distinct dark red (2.5YR 3/6) redox concentrations; weak coarse prismatic structure parting to weak coarse subangular blocky; hard, firm; few very fine roots; few very fine, many fine, and common medium continuous tubular pores; common faint discontinuous clay films on vertical faces; few fine iron-manganese concretions; brown (7.5YR 4/3) material along root channels; slightly acid; clear wavy boundary. (Combined thickness of the Bt horizon ranges from 61 to 102 cm [24 to 40 in])
BC--140 to 149 cm (55 to 59 in); red (2.5YR 5/6) sandy clay loam, red (2.5YR 4/6) moist; few medium distinct dark red (10R 3/6) redox concentrations; weak coarse subangular blocky structure; hard, friable; few very fine roots; common very fine and many fine continuous tubular pores; brown (7.5YR 4/3) material along root channels; weathered sandstone fragments 10 percent by volume; slightly acid; abrupt wavy boundary. (Thickness of the BC horizon is 0 to 25 cm [0 to 10 in])
Cr--149 to 165 cm (59 to 65 in); red (2.5YR 4/6) soft laminated sandstone, dark red (2.5YR 3/6) moist; slightly acid.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY:
Drainage: well drained
Permeability: moderate
Saturated hydraulic conductivity: moderately high
Runoff: low on 0 to 1 percent slopes, high on 1 to 5 percent slopes and very high on 5 to 8 percent slopes
USE AND VEGETATION: Used for cropland and livestock grazing. Cultivated areas are cropped to small grains, grain sorghum, cotton, alfalfa, and tame pasture. Native vegetation is mid and tall grass prairie.
