TYPICAL PEDON: Araveton extremely stony loam in an area of grassland (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted.)

A1--0 to 10 cm; dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) extremely stony loam, very dark brown (10YR 2/2) moist; moderate very fine and fine granular structure; hard, very friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; common very fine and fine roots; many very fine irregular pores; 10 percent stones; neutral (pH 6.8); gradual smooth boundary.

A2--10 to 18 cm; dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) loam, very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) moist; moderate very fine and fine granular structure; slightly hard, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; common very fine and fine roots; many very fine and fine tubular pores; 10 percent stones; neutral (pH 7.0); gradual smooth boundary.

Bw--18 to 41 cm; brown (10YR 5/3) stony loam, dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) moist; weak medium subangular blocky structure; hard, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; common very fine and fine roots; many very fine and fine tubular pores; 15 percent stones; neutral (pH 7.0); clear wavy boundary.

Bk1--41 to 61 cm; pale brown (10YR 6/3) stony loam, brown (10YR 4/3) moist; weak medium subangular blocky structure; soft, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; common very fine and fine roots; many very fine and fine tubular pores; common threadlike calcium carbonate masses throughout; common calcium carbonate coatings on rock fragments; 20 percent angular stones; strongly effervescent; slightly alkaline (pH 7.6); clear wavy boundary.

Bk2--61 to 97 cm; pale brown (10YR 6/3) stony loam, brown (10YR 5/3) moist; massive; hard, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; common very fine and fine roots; many very fine and fine tubular pores; finely disseminated calcium carbonate; 25 percent angular stones; violently effervescent; slightly alkaline (pH 7.8); gradual wavy boundary.

Bk3--97 to 132 cm; light gray (2.5Y 7/2) loam, grayish brown (2.5Y 5/2) moist; massive; hard, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; few very fine and fine roots; many very fine and fine tubular pores; common threadlike calcium carbonate masses throughout; common calcium carbonate coatings on rock fragments; 10 percent angular stones; strongly effervescent; slightly alkaline (pH 7.6); clear wavy boundary.

Bk4--132 to 168 cm; very pale brown (10YR 7/3) very stony loam, brown (7.5YR 5/3) moist; massive; hard, firm, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; few very fine roots; many very fine and fine tubular pores; common threadlike calcium carbonate masses throughout; 40 percent angular stones; strongly effervescent; slightly alkaline (pH 7.6).
