These soils are on alluvial fans, stream terraces, hills and sedimentary plains. Slopes are 0 to 60 percent. Mean annual precipitation is about 17 inches. Mean annual temperature is about 4l degrees F.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine-loamy, mixed, superactive, frigid Typic Haplustalfs

TYPICAL PEDON: Belltower loam, in coniferous forest (colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted).

Oi--2 inches to 0; undecomposed and slightly decomposed forest litter.

(5 to 9 inches thick)

Bt--17 to 32 inches; light brownish gray (2.5Y 6/2) sandy clay loam, grayish brown (2.5Y 5/2) moist; moderate medium prismatic structure parting to strong medium subangular blocky; very hard, firm, sticky and plastic; common very fine, fine and medium roots; many very fine and common fine tubular pores; 20 percent channer sized soft fragments; neutral (pH 7.0); clear wavy boundary. (9 to 20 inches thick)

Bk--32 to 36 inches; light gray (2.5Y 7/2) loam, light brownish gray (2.5Y 6/2) moist; moderate medium prismatic structure; soft, very friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; few fine and very fine roots; many very fine tubular pores; 50 percent channer and flagstone sized coarse fragments; few fine and medium masses and seams of lime; disseminated lime; strongly effervescent; moderately alkaline (pH 8.0); gradual wavy boundary. (3 to 12 inches thick)

Cr--36 to 60 inches; light gray (5Y 7/2) semiconsolidated sedimentary beds that crush to loam, olive gray (5Y 5/2) moist.

Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in this pedon are: an ochric epipedon from the soil surface to 17 inches (A and E horizons); an albic horizon from 8 to 17 inches (E horizon); an argillic horizon from 17 to 32 inches (Bt horizon); a particle-size control section that is the entire argillic horizon; an accumulation of secondary calcium carbonates from 32 to 36 inches (Bk horizon); and a paralithic contact at a depth of 36 inches. Belltower soils have a frigid temperature regime and an ustic moisture regime.
