CAMELBACK SERIES

The Camelback series consists of deep and very deep, well drained soils that formed in alluvium, colluvium and slope alluvium over residuum weathered from sedimentary and metamorphic rocks, dominantly quartzite. These soils are on mountain slopes, hillslopes, alluvial fans, escarpments, and fan remnants. Slopes are 4 to 80 percent. Mean annual precipitation is about 525 mm, and mean annual temperature is about 5.0 degrees C.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Loamy-skeletal, mixed, superactive, frigid Pachic Argixerolls

TYPICAL PEDON: Camelback gravelly silt loam. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted.)

A1--0 to 8 cm; dark brown (10YR 3/3) gravelly silt loam, very dark brown (10YR 2/2) moist; weak fine granular structure; soft, very friable, slightly sticky, slightly plastic; many very fine, common fine and few medium roots; many very fine interstitial pores; 25 percent gravel; slightly acid (pH 6.4); abrupt smooth boundary.

A2--8 to 30 cm; brown (10YR 4/3) gravelly silt loam, very dark brown (10YR 2/2) moist; weak coarse and medium subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, very friable, slightly sticky, slightly plastic; many very fine, common fine, and few medium roots; many very fine and few fine tubular pores; 25 percent gravel; slightly acid (pH 6.4); clear smooth boundary.

AB--30 to 53 cm; brown (10YR 4/3) gravelly silt loam, very dark brown (10YR 2/2) moist; weak medium and coarse subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, very friable, slightly sticky, slightly plastic; common very fine and few fine roots; many very fine and few fine tubular pores; 30 percent gravel; slightly acid (pH 6.3); gradual wavy boundary.

Bt1--53 to 76 cm; brown (10YR 4/3) extremely cobbly silt loam, very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) moist; moderate medium and fine subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, friable, slightly sticky, slightly plastic; common very fine and few fine roots; many very fine tubular and few very fine interstitial pores; 15 thin clay films on the faces of peds and on surfaces along pores; 40 percent gravel, 25 percent cobbles and 5 percent stones; slightly acid (pH 6.2); gradual wavy boundary.

Bt2--76 to 107 cm; yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) extremely cobbly silt loam, dark yellowish brown (10YR 3/4) moist; moderate medium and fine subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, friable, slightly sticky, slightly plastic; common very fine and few fine roots; many very fine tubular and few fine interstitial pores; 35 percent thin clay films on the faces of peds and on surfaces along pores; 40 percent gravel, 20 percent cobbles and 10 percent stones; slightly acid (pH 6.2); abrupt irregular boundary.

R--107 cm; quartzite bedrock.
