FORESTCITY SERIES


The Forestcity series consists of very deep, poorly drained soils that formed in loamy colluvium and the underlying calcareous loamy glacial till. They are on linear or concave positions on moraines. These soils have moderate permeability in the upper part and moderately rapid permeability in the underlying glacial till. Slopes range from 0 to 3 percent. Mean annual precipitation is about 27 inches. Mean annual air temperature is about 46 degrees F.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine-loamy, mixed, superactive, mesic Typic Argiaquolls

TYPICAL PEDON: Forestcity fine sandy loam on a nearly level slope on a glacial moraine in a cultivated field. (Colors are for moist soil unless otherwise noted).

Ap--0 to 10 inches; very dark brown (10YR 2/2) fine sandy loam, dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) dry; weak fine subangular blocky structure; very friable; about 2 percent gravel; slightly acid; abrupt smooth boundary. (6 to 12 inches thick)

A1--10 to 22 inches; black (10YR 2/1) fine sandy loam, dark gray (10YR 4/1) dry; weak fine subangular blocky structure parting to weak very fine subangular blocky; very friable; about 2 percent gravel; slightly acid; clear smooth boundary.

A2--22 to 36 inches; black (10YR 2/1) loam, very dark gray (10YR 3/1) dry; ; moderate medium subangular blocky structure parting to moderate very fine subangular blocky; very friable; black (N 2/0) coating of organic matter on faces of peds; about 2 percent gravel; slightly acid; gradual smooth boundary.

AB--36 to 43 inches; very dark gray (10YR 3/1) loam, few fine prominent light olive brown (2.5Y 5/4) Fe concentrations; dark gray (10YR 4/1) dry; weak fine prismatic structure parting to moderate fine angular blocky; friable; about 2 percent gravel; slightly acid; clear smooth boundary. (Combined thickness of the A horizons is 24 to 60 inches.)

2Btg1--43 to 48 inches; olive gray (5Y 4/2) sandy clay loam; few fine prominent light olive brown (2.5Y 5/6) Fe concentrations; moderate medium prismatic structure parting to moderate fine angular blocky; firm; many very dark gray (10YR 3/1) clay films on faces of peds and in pores; about 4 percent gravel; moderately acid; gradual smooth boundary.

2Btg2--48 to 60 inches; olive gray (5Y 5/2) sandy clay loam; common fine prominent light olive brown (2.5Y 5/4) Fe concentrations and few fine faint gray (5Y 6/1) Fe depletions; moderate coarse prismatic structure parting to moderate coarse angular blocky; friable; many very dark gray (10YR 3/1) clay films on faces of peds and in pores; about 6 percent gravel; slightly acid; clear smooth boundary. (Combined thickness of 2Bt horizons is 10 to 24 inches)

2BCg--60 to 80 inches; light olive gray (5Y 6/2) sandy loam; common fine prominent light olive brown (2.5Y 5/6) Fe concentrations; weak coarse subangular blocky structure; very friable; about 6 percent gravel; slightly effervescent; slightly alkaline.

TYPE LOCATION: Meeker County, Minnesota, about 4 1/2 miles north of Kingston; 2550 feet east and 2550 feet south of the northwest corner of sec. 34, T. 121 N., R. 29 W.; USGS Kingston, Minnesota quadrangle, latitude 45 degrees 14 minutes 49 seconds N. and longitude 94 degrees 18 minutes 44 seconds W., NAD27.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: The lower one half of the series control section is saturated for 21 days beyond the summer solstice in 6 years out of 10. Depth to carbonates ranges from 30 to 80 inches. The thickness of the mollic epipedon ranges from 24 to 60 inches. Depth to the top of the argillic horizon is 25 to 48 inches. The upper 20 inches of the argillic horizon averages between 18 and 28 percent clay and 35 and 55 percent fine sand and coarser.

The Ap or A horizon has hue of 10YR or is neutral, value of 2 or 3 and chroma of 0 to 2. It is sandy loam, fine sandy loam, sandy clay loam or loam. It is neutral or slightly acid. Grainy coats on faces of peds and thin incipient E horizons are present in some pedons. Rock fragments range from 1 to 5 percent by volume and are commonly 2 to 20 mm in size.

AB horizon has colors and textures and reaction similar to the A and 2Btg horizons.

The 2Btg horizon has hue of 10YR to 5Y, value of 3 to 5 and chroma of 1 or 2. It is loam, sandy clay loam or clay loam. It is slightly alkaline to moderately acid. Rock fragments ranges from 1 to 8 percent by volume and are commonly 2 to 20 mm in size.

The 2BCg horizon has hue of 2.5Y or 5Y, value of 5 or 6, and chroma of 1 or 2. It fine sandy loam, sandy loam or loam. It is slightly alkaline or moderately alkaline. Calcium carbonate equivalent ranges from 10 to 20 percent. Rock fragment range from 1 to 10 percent by volume and are commonly 2 to 20 mm in size. Clay content is 10 to 18 percent. Some pedons have a 2Bkg, 2Bg or a Cg horizon.

COMPETING SERIES: These are the Alvada, Barry, Berville, Brookston, Buntingville, Clackamas, Cordova, Hamel, Jameston, Marengo, Millgrove, Navan, Nosoni, Renssalaer, and Westland. The Alvada soil is not currently in the OSD file. Buntingville soils are not saturated in the soil moisture control section during the 30 days following the summer solstice. Berville and Clackamas soils have more than 5 percent gravel in the upper 1/3 of the series control section. Brookston and Jameston soils average more than 25 percent clay in the upper 1/3 of the series control section. Cordova and Nosoni soils average more than 27 percent clay in the middle 1/3 of the series control section. Barry, Marengo and Rensselaer soils have a mollic epipedon less than 24 inches thick. Hamel soils have less than 35 percent fine sand and coarser in the middle 1/3 of the series control section. Navan soils average more than 28 percent clay in the lower 1/3 of the series control section. Millsgrove and Westland soils have greater than 10 percent gravel in the lower 1/3 of the series control section.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Forestcity soils are on concave or linear swales and footslopes on moraines. Slopes range from 0 to 3 percent. They have formed in loamy colluvium and the underlying calcareous loamy glacial till of the Wadena Lobe of the Late Wisconsin glaciation. Mean annual air temperature ranges from 45 to 48 degrees F. Mean annual precipitation ranges from 24 to 28 inches. The number of frost free days ranges from 140 to 155 days. Elevation above sea level ranges from 1050 to 1250 feet.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Koronis, Lundlake, Marcellon, Sunburg, Swedegrove, Uniongrove and Wadenill soils. Koronis and Sunburg are well drained and higher lying. The somewhat poorly drained Marcellon soils are on low summits. The poorly drained Uniongrove soils are on nearly level, plane to slightly concave positions and do not have an argillic horizon. Poorly drained Swedegrove soils are on rims of depressions and are calcareous throughout. Very poorly drained Lundlake soils are in closed depressions.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Poorly drained. Surface runoff is negligible to low. Permeability is moderate in the upper mantle and moderately rapid in the underlying material. An apparent seasonal high water table is at 0.5 to 1.5 feet at some time during November to July in most years, when undrained.

USE AND VEGETATION: Used mostly to grow corn and soybeans. A few areas are in pasture or woodland. Native vegetation is tall grass prairie and mixed hardwoods.

REMARKS: Diagnostic horizons and other features recognized in this pedon are: Mollic epipedon-the zone from the surface of the soil to 43 inches-(Ap, A1, A2, AB horizon); argillic horizon - the zone from a depth of 43 inches to 60 inches-(Btg1 and Btg2 horizons). Other features: aquic moisture condition-redoximorphic concentrations in the lower part of the mollic epipedon and low chroma matrix with redoximorphic concentrations below the mollic epipedon. 1/20/2011-TYPE LOCATION error was corrected.
