FRYREAR SERIES


The Fryrear series consists of moderately deep, well drained soils on volcanic uplands. They formed in ash and colluvium over bedrock. Slopes are 0 to 50 percent. The mean annual precipitation is about 15 inches and the mean annual temperature is about 45 degrees F.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Ashy-skeletal, glassy, frigid Humic Vitrixerands

TYPICAL PEDON: Fryrear stony ashy sandy loam - rangeland, on a 20 percent northeast facing slope at 3100 feet elevation. (When described (8/20/85), soil was dry throughout. Colors are for moist soil unless otherwise noted.)

Oi--0 to 1 inch; slightly decomposed litter of ponderosa pine needles.

A1--1 to 4 inches; dark brown (10YR 3/3) stony ashy sandy loam, dark brown (10YR 3/3) dry; weak fine granular structure; slightly hard, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; many very fine and fine roots; many very fine irregular pores; 5 percent gravel, 5 percent cobbles, and 20 percent stones; neutral (pH 7.0); gradual wavy boundary.

A2--4 to 19 inches; dark brown (10YR 3/3) very stony ashy sandy loam, dark brown (10YR 3/3) dry; weak fine subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; common very fine and few fine, medium and coarse roots; many very fine irregular pores; 5 percent gravel, 10 percent cobbles and 40 percent stones; neutral (pH 7.0); gradual irregular boundary. (Combined thickness of the A horizon is 12 to 19 inches)

Bw--19 to 28 inches; dark yellowish brown (10YR 3/4) very stony ashy sandy loam, dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4) dry; moderate fine and medium subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; common very fine and few fine, medium, and coarse roots; common very fine interstitial and few fine tubular pores; 5 percent gravel, 10 percent cobbles and 40 percent stones; neutral (pH 7.0); abrupt irregular boundary. (7 to 22 inches thick)

2R--28 inches; fractured basalt; common distinct clay films on fracture faces, basalt fragments have a 1 to 2 mm weathering rind.

TYPE LOCATION: Deschutes County, Oregon; 100 feet south of the Fremont Canyon road, northwest corner of the southwest quarter, section 24, T. 14 S., R. 10 E. (Latitude 44 degrees, 20 minutes, 36 seconds N, Longitude 121 degrees, 28 minutes, 51 seconds W)

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: These soils are is intermittently moist and are dry in all parts of the soil moisture control section for 90 to 110 consecutive days. The mean annual soil temperature is about 44 to 47 degrees F. Depth to bedrock is 20 to 40 inches. The solum contains 50 to 80 percent volcanic glass and glass-coated aggregates. Reaction is neutral throughout. Phosphate retention is 40 to 70 percent. The acid oxalate extractable aluminum plus one-half the acid oxalate extractable iron is 0.40 to 1.0 percent. Base saturation is 80 to 100 percent by ammonium acetate. The mollic epipedon is 10 to 15 inches thick. Field estimated clay content is 10 to 20 percent throughout the profile. The particle-size control section averages 35 to 60 percent rock fragments.

The A horizon has hue of 10YR, value of 3 moist and 3 or 4 dry and chroma of 2 or 3 moist and dry. It contains 5 to 10 percent gravel, 5 to 10 percent cobbles and 15 to 40 percent stones, with a total of 25 to 60 percent rock fragments.

The Bw horizon has hue of 10YR, value of 3 moist and 4 dry and chroma of 4 moist and dry. It contains 5 to 10 percent gravel, 10 to 30 percent cobbles and 20 to 40 percent stones with a total of 35 to 60 percent rock fragments. It is very stony ashy sandy loam or very cobbly ashy sandy loam.

COMPETING SERIES: These are the Pipp and Yapoah series. All of these soils are over 40 inches deep to bedrock.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: The Fryrear soils are on volcanic uplands, old lava flows and plateaus. Elevations are 2,800 to 4,000 feet. These soils formed in ash and colluvium over bedrock. The climate is characterized by cold, wet winters and hot, dry summers. The mean annual precipitation is 12 to 18 inches, falling mostly as snow. The mean annual temperature is 42 to 47 degrees F. The frost-free period is 60 to 90 days.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Fremkle, Henkle, Laidlaw, and Wanoga soils. Fremkle soils are shallow to bedrock and contain less than 35 percent coarse fragments. Henkle soils are shallow to bedrock. Laidlaw soils are deep to bedrock and contain less than 35 percent coarse fragments. Wanoga soils are moderately deep to bedrock and contain less than 35 percent coarse fragments.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well-drained; moderately rapid permeability.

USE AND VEGETATION: These soils are used for livestock grazing, wildlife habitat, and recreation. Potential native vegetation is western juniper, ponderosa pine, and Idaho fescue.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Footslopes and plateaus of the Eastern Cascades in Central Oregon; MLRA 6. The series is not extensive.

Remarks: Diagnostic horizons and features in the pedon are:

mollic epipedon - from 1 to about 11 inches (A1, and part of the A2 horizons).

cambic horizon - from 19 to 28 inches (Bw).

The particle-size control section (1 to 28 inches)) averages 50 percent rock fragments.

Andic soil properties - Based on laboratory data from the associated Wanoga Series; S860R-017-001. P-retention is about 60 percent. The glass and glass-coated aggregate in the very fine sand fraction is about 70 percent. Acid oxalate aluminum plus one-half the acid oxalate iron is about 0.43 percent. The 15-bar water on both dried and undried samples is less than 10 percent.

Ash deposit is from Mt. Mazama.
