TYPE LOCATION: Lake County, Oregon; east of Rabbit Basin in Warner Valley; approximately 700 feet south and 2,600 feet east of the northwest corner of section 4, T. 34 S., R. 25 E.; USGS Rabbit Hills NE 7.5 minute topographic quadrangle; latitude 42 degrees 39 minutes 25 seconds N and longitude 119 degrees 46 minutes 30 seconds W; NAD 83.
RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS:
Soil moisture: Usually moist in the moisture control section in winter and spring, dry in summer and fall; typic aridic soil moisture regime.

COMPETING SERIES: These are the
Defenbaugh,
Hostage,
Kinnear,
Pavillion, and
Tewa series.
Defenbaugh and
Kinnear soils do not have horizons with pararock fragments from cemented lacustrine deposits.
Hostage and
Pavillion soils are moderately deep to paralithic contacts.
Tewa soils are intermittently moist in the upper horizons during July through September due to summer convection storms and do not have horizons with pararock fragments from cemented lacustrine deposits.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Rabbitcreek soils are on lake terraces. These soils formed in alluvium over lacustrine deposits derived from volcanic rocks. Slopes are 0 to 3 percent. Elevations range from 1,320 to 1,495 meters. The climate is arid and characterized by cool, moist winters and warm, dry summers. The mean annual precipitation is 200 to 250 mm, the mean annual temperature is 7 to 9 degrees C, and the frost-free period is 80 to 110 days.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the
Boravall,
Rabbithills,
Reese, and
Turpin soils. Boravall soils are fine, saline-sodic, and have endosaturation at shallow depth. Rabbithills soils are loamy and shallow to duripans. Reese soils are fine-loamy, saline-sodic, and have endosaturation at shallow depth. Turpin soils are fine-loamy, saline-sodic, and have sodium adsorption ratio of 100 to 300 within the series control section.
DRAINAGE AND SATURATED HYDRAULIC CONDUCTIVITY: Well drained; low surface runoff; moderately slow permeability; moderately high saturated hydraulic conductivity.
USE AND VEGETATION: Rabbitcreek soils are used for livestock grazing and wildlife habitat. The historic plant community is shadscale, bud sagebrush, black greasewood, Indian ricegrass, and bottlebrush squirreltail.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: South-central Oregon. These soils are not extensive with about 750 acres of the series mapped to date. MLRA 23.
