SOJUR SERIES

The Sojur series consists of very shallow, well drained soils that formed in residuum derived from metamorphic rocks. Sojur soils are on hills and mountains. Slopes are 15 to 75 percent. The mean annual precipitation is about 150 mm and the mean annual temperature is about 11 degrees C.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Loamy-skeletal, mixed, superactive, calcareous, mesic Lithic Torriorthents

TYPICAL PEDON: Sojur extremely channery silt loam--rangeland. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted.) The soil surface is covered with 75 percent channers.

A1--0 to 5 cm; light gray (2.5Y 7/2) extremely channery silt loam, grayish brown (2.5Y 5/2) moist; moderate thin platy structure; slightly hard, very friable, moderately sticky and moderately plastic; few very fine roots; many very fine and common fine vesicular pores; 75 percent channers; violently effervescent; strongly alkaline (pH 8.6); abrupt smooth boundary. (10 to 25 cm thick)

A2--5 to 10 cm; light yellowish brown (2.5Y 6/4) extremely channery silt loam, olive brown (2.5Y 4/4) moist; moderate fine subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, very friable, moderately sticky and moderately plastic; few very fine roots; many very fine and common fine vesicular pores; 75 percent channers; violently effervescent; strongly alkaline (pH 8.6); abrupt smooth boundary. (0 to 13 cm thick)

R--10 cm; fractured, horizontally oriented phyllite with many very fine, common fine, and few medium roots in the upper 15 cm of fractures and few very fine roots below.

TYPE LOCATION: Pershing County, Nevada; in an unsurveyed area about 17 miles northwest of Rye Patch Reservoir near the Kamma Mountains; 14,000 feet west and 400 feet south of the northwest corner of section 13, T.34 N., R.30 E.; USGS Sawtooth Knob, NV 7.5 minute topographic quadrangle; latitude 40 degrees 49 minutes 3.6 seconds N and longitude 118 degrees 36 minutes 39.7 seconds W; WGS84 Decimal Degrees 40.8176667 latitude, -118.611028 longitude.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS:
Soil moisture: Usually dry; moist for short periods in winter and early spring, dry mid-May through November; typic aridic soil moisture regime.
Mean annual soil temperature: 12 to 14 degrees C.
Depth to bedrock: 10 to 25 cm to a lithic contact.
Reaction: Moderately alkaline or strongly alkaline.
Calcium carbonate equivalent: 1 to 10 percent.
Effervescence: Strongly effervescent or violently effervescent.
Other features: Some pedons have thin C horizons with greater than 60 percent rock fragments overlying the lithic contact. Thin zones with greater than 90 percent rock fragments (fragmental material) less than 13 cm thick also may be present. Pararock fragments may occur as small pieces (paragravel or parachanners) of soft phyllite or schist.

Particle-size control section - Clay content: 18 to 25 percent.
Rock fragments: 50 to 75 percent when mixed with the surface rock fragments, mainly channers; lithology of fragments is phyllite, schist, or similar metamorphic rocks

A horizon
Hue: 10YR through 5Y.
Value: 5 through 7 dry, 4 or 5 moist.
Chroma: 2 through 4.
Texture: Silt loam or loam.

COMPETING SERIES: These are the Berzatic, Blacktop, Cadrina, Pintwater, Singatse, and Tsaya series.

Berzatic soils have calcium carbonate equivalent of 15 to 35 percent. Blacktop soils are dominated by gravel, cobbles, and stones in the particle-size control section. Cadrina soils have mean annual soil temperature of 8 to 10 degrees C and have fragments of sandstone or shale in the control section. Pintwater soils are 25 to 50 cm deep and have Bkq horizons. Singatse soils average 5 to 15 percent clay and are dominated by gravel. Tsaya soils are intermittently moist in some part of soil moisture control section during July-September, and lithology of fragments in the profile is mainly sandstone and shale.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Sojur soils are on hills and mountains. They formed in residuum derived from metamorphic rocks. Slopes are 15 to 75 percent. Elevations range from 1,220 to 1,930 meters. The climate is cool-arid with cool, moist winters and hot, dry summers. The mean annual precipitation is 130 to 200 mm, the mean annual temperature is 10 to 12 degrees C, and the frost-free period is 110 to 130 days.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Boomstick, Majuba, and Wesfil soils. Boomstick and Majuba soils have argillic horizons. Wesfil soils have an aridic soil moisture regime that borders on xeric.

DRAINAGE AND SATURATED HYDRAULIC CONDUCTIVITY: Well drained; high surface runoff; moderately high saturated hydraulic conductivity.

USE AND VEGETATION: Sojur soils are used for rangeland and wildlife habitat. The present vegetation is mainly shadscale, bud sagebrush, littleleaf horsebrush, rabbitbrush, Indian ricegrass, and bottlebrush squirreltail.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Western Nevada. These soils are not extensive. MLRAs 27 and 24.

MLRA SOIL SURVEY REGIONAL OFFICE (MO) RESPONSIBLE: Davis, California.

SERIES ESTABLISHED: Pershing County, Nevada, West Part. 1988.

REMARKS: Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in this pedon are:
