BADITO SERIES

The Badito series consists of moderately deep, well drained soils that formed in residuum and colluvium from conglomerate and sandstone. These soils are on warm south-facing mountainsides. Slopes range from 25 to 60 percent. The mean annual precipitation is 15 inches, and the mean annual temperature is 42 degrees F.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Loamy-skeletal, mixed, superactive, frigid Aridic Argiustolls

TYPICAL PEDON: Badito very cobbly sandy loam - on a 25 percent south- facing mountainside under pinyon and juniper trees at 8,640 feet elevation. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted.)

A11--0 to 3 inches; dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) very cobbly sandy loam, very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) moist; weak very fine granular structure; soft, very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; 25 percent cobbles, 30 percent pebbles; neutral; abrupt smooth boundary. (2 to 4 inches thick)

A12--3 to 7 inches; dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) very cobbly sandy loam, very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) moist; weak very fine granular structure; soft, very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; 25 percent cobbles, 30 percent pebbles; neutral; abrupt smooth boundary. (2 to 4 inches thick)

B1--7 to 11 inches; brown (7.5YR 5/2) very gravelly sandy clay loam, dark brown (7.5YR 3/2) moist; moderate fine subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, friable, slightly sticky and nonplastic; 20 percent cobbles, 30 percent pebbles; neutral; abrupt smooth boundary. (3 to 5 inches thick)

B2t--11 to 16 inches; brown (7.5YR 5/4) very gravelly sandy clay loam, dark brown (7.5YR 4/4) moist; moderate medium subangular blocky structure; hard, firm, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; 10 percent cobbles, 50 percent pebbles; neutral; clear wavy boundary. (5 to 15 inches thick)

C1--16 to 35 inches; strong brown (7.5YR 5/6) extremely gravelly sandy loam, dark brown (7.5YR 4/4) moist; massive; slightly hard, very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; 10 percent cobbles, 60 percent pebbles; neutral; gradual wavy boundary. (5 to 20 inches thick)

C2--35 to 43 inches; light brown (7.5YR 6/4) soft agglomeritic tuff; neutral; abrupt wavy boundary. (5 to 40 inches thick)

R--43 inches; hard sandstone bedrock.

TYPE LOCATION: Huerfano County, Colorado; one mile north and about one mile east of Bradford; 100 feet north and 500 feet west of the SE corner of Sec. 3, T. 25 S., R. 71 W.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: Depth to soft bedrock is 20 to 40 inches and is underlain by hard rock at less than 60 inches. Rock fragments are somewhat rounded and are dominantly less than 3 inches in diameter. The particle-size control section has 35 to 60 percent rock fragments. Mean annual temperature is 43 to 45 degrees F. Mean summer temperature is 60 to 65 degrees F.

The A horizon has hue of 10YR or 7.5YR, value of 4 or 5 dry, 2 or 3 moist, and chroma of 2 or 3. It is slightly acid or neutral.

The B2t horizon has hue of 7.5YR or 10YR, value of 4 through 6 dry, 3 or 4 moist, and chroma of 3 through 5. It is slightly acid or neutral.

The C horizon has hue of 7.5YR or 10YR, value of 5 or 6 dry, 4 or 5 moist, and chroma of 4 through 6. It is neutral or mildly alkaline.

COMPETING SERIES: These are the Beaverell, Curecanti, (T) Hauz, Ipson, San Isabel, (T) Sieben, Simmont, Uracca, and Zillman series. Beaverell, Curecanti, Ipson, San Isabel, Sieben, Uracca, and Zillman soils lack bedrock within 40 inches. Hauz and Simmont soils have a lithic contact at a depth of 20 to 40 inches.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Badito soils are on warm south-facing mountainsides. Slopes are 25 to 60 percent. The soils formed from tuff or sandstone. The mean annual temperature is 41 to 44 degrees F, and the mean annual precipitation is 14 to 16 inches. Elevation ranges from 7,500 to 8,700 feet.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Bayerton, Breece, Brownsto, and Maitland soils. Bayerton and Maitland soils have less than 35 percent coarse fragments in their particle-size control sections and lack a mollic epipedon. Breece soils are more than 60 inches to bedrock and have a mollic epipedon more than 20 inches thick.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; rapid runoff; moderate permeability.

USE AND VEGETATION: These soils are used for rangeland, woodland, and wildlife habitat. Native vegetation is pinyon and juniper trees, with an understory of mountainmahogany, Indian ricegrass, sideoats grama, and blue grama.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: These soils are of small extent in the south- central part of Colorado. Their total area is about 5,000 acres.
