BARKERVILLE SERIES

The Barkerville series consists of moderately deep, somewhat excessively drained soils that formed in slope alluvium weathered from granite and closely related rocks. These soils are on hillslopes and mountain slopes. The mean annual precipitation is about 15 inches and the mean annual air temperature is about 53 degrees F.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Sandy-skeletal, mixed, mesic Aridic Ustorthents

TYPICAL PEDON: Barkerville cobbly loamy sand, rangeland. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted)

Oi--0 to 0.5 inches; undecomposed and partially decomposed leaves and twigs from brush. About 25 percent of the surface is covered with cobbles.

A--0.5 to 5 inches; dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) cobbly loamy sand, very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) moist; weak thin platy structure parting to weak fine granular; slightly hard, friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; common fine roots; many very fine interstitial pores; 30 percent gravel and cobbles; slightly alkaline (pH 7.4); clear smooth boundary. (4 to 10 inches thick)

C1--5 to 10 inches; yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) and light gray (10YR 7/2) gravelly loamy sand, dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4) and light yellowish brown (10YR 6/4) moist; massive; hard, friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; few very fine roots; many very fine interstitial pores; 20 percent angular fine gravel and few cobbles; neutral (pH 7.0); abrupt irregular boundary. (10 to 20 inches thick)

C2--10 to 26 inches; yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) and light gray (10YR 7/2) very gravelly loamy sand, dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4) and light yellowish brown (10YR 6/4) moist; massive; very hard, firm, nonsticky and nonplastic; few medium roots; many fine interstitial pores; 40 percent fine gravel and few cobbles; neutral (pH 7.0); abrupt irregular boundary. (10 to 20 inches thick)

2R--26 to 40 inches; granite with a few fractures.

TYPE LOCATION: Yavapai County, Arizona; about 6 miles southeast of Wagoner, Arizona on the road from Wagoner to Crown King, then .1 mile north of the road; .4 mile east and .4 mile south of northeast corner of sec. 5, T. 9 N., R. 2 W.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS:

Soil moisture - Moist in some part of the soil moisture control section in July-September and December-February. Moist is some part 50 to 70 percent of the time that the soil temperature at a depth of 20 inches is above 41 degrees. Aridic ustic soil moisture regime.

Rock fragments: Averages 35 to 55 percent gravel or cobbles in the control section

Organic matter content: less than 1 percent

COMPETING SERIES: These are the Bamac and Schamber series. Bamac and Schamber soils are very deep.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Barkerville soils are on hillslopes and mountain slopes at elevations of 4,000 to 7,500 feet. Slopes range from 5 to 60 percent but are dominantly 10 to 40 percent. These soils formed in slope alluvium from coarse-grained igneous rock (granite and closely related rocks). The mean annual air temperature ranges from 50 to 57 degrees F. The mean annual precipitation ranges from 12 to 16 inches and occurs mainly as thunderstorms in July and August and as gentle rains with some snow in December and January. Usually there is some precipitation each month of the year. The frost-free period is 140 to 180 days.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Cordes, Gaddes, Lynx and Showlow soils. Cordes soils have coarse-loamy control sections. Gaddes and Showlow soils have argillic horizons. Lynx soils have fine-loamy control sections.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Somewhat excessively drained, medium runoff; moderately rapid permeability.

USE AND VEGETATION: Used for livestock grazing. Brush-grass aspect. Brush species are oakbrush, deer brush, manzanita, mountain-mahogany and a few widely spaced juniper and pinon pine trees. Grasses are mainly sideoats grama, blue grama, andropogons and three-awn, with some buckwheat, snakeweed and annuals.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: In southeastern and central Arizona. Barkerville soils are extensive. MLRA 38 and 41.

SERIES ESTABLISHED: Santa Cruz County Area, Arizona, 1971

REMARKS: Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in the Barkerville series are:

Ochric epipedon - 0 to 5 inches (A horizon)

Lithic contact - the boundary at 26 inches (2R horizon)

Classification changed to Aridic subgroup in 2006. This change was made to be consistent with the moisture regime.
