BONEYARD SERIES

The Boneyard series consists of moderately deep, well drained soils that formed in residuum and colluvium from quartzite. The Boneyard soils are on mountain backslopes. Slopes are 8 to 75 percent. The mean annual precipitation is about 500 mm and the mean annual temperature is about 5 degrees C.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Loamy-skeletal, mixed, superactive Xeric Argicryolls

TYPICAL PEDON: Boneyard very stony loam--rangeland. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted.) The soil surface is partially covered with approximately 35 percent gravel, 10 percent cobbles, and 10 percent stones.

A1--0 to 8 cm; dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) very stony loam, very dark brown (10YR 2/2) moist; weak very thin platy structure; soft, very friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; few very fine roots; common very fine tubular pores; 35 percent gravel, 10 percent cobbles, and 10 percent stones; neutral (pH 7.2); clear smooth boundary. (5 to 10 cm thick)

A2--8 to 25 cm; dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) very cobbly loam, very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) moist; weak very fine subangular blocky structure; soft, very friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; many very fine roots; common very fine tubular pores; 30 percent gravel and 20 percent cobbles; neutral (pH 7.2); clear wavy boundary. (0 to 30 cm thick)

Bt1--25 to 40 cm; brown (10YR 5/3) extremely gravelly loam, dark brown (10YR 3/3) moist; weak very fine subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, friable, moderately sticky and moderately plastic; many very fine, and few fine and medium roots; common very fine tubular and interstitial pores; few faint clay films bridging sand grains and lining pores; 60 percent gravel and 5 percent cobbles; slightly alkaline (pH 7.4); clear wavy boundary. (8 to 30 cm thick)

Bt2--40 to 64 cm; yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) extremely gravelly loam, dark yellowish brown (10YR 3/4) moist; weak very fine subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, friable, moderately sticky and moderately plastic; few very fine roots; common very fine tubular and interstitial pores; common distinct clay films bridging sand grains and lining pores; 55 percent gravel and 10 percent cobbles; slightly alkaline (pH 7.4); abrupt irregular boundary. (10 to 30 cm thick)

R--64 cm; slightly fractured indurated quartzite bedrock.

COMPETING SERIES: These are the Chamberlain(ID), Cowlow(ID), Crandall(UT), Ezbin(ID), Forsey(UT), Fourme(ID), Itwo(NV), Jackflat(CA), Packer(NV), Scuffe(NV), Stopatoe((NV), Successloop(NV), Tagum(NV), Toquima(NV), Winada(NV), and Zeebar(ID) series.
The Chamberlain, Ezbin, Forsey, Fourme, and Zeebar soils are very deep.
Cowlow soils have a calcic horizon at 28 to 76 cm.
Crandall soils are deep.
Itwo soils are slightly acid to neutral throughout.
Jackflat soils have a paralithic contact at 100 to 150 cm.
The Packer soils are deep and very deep.
Scuffe, Stopatoe, Tagum, and Winada soils are moderately deep to paralithic contacts.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Boneyard soils are on mountain backslopes. These soils formed in colluvium and residuum from quartzite. Slopes are 8 to 75 percent. Elevations are 1,980 to 3,050 m. The climate is moist-subhumid with cold wet winters and warm dry summers. The mean annual precipitation is 450 to 700 mm. The mean annual temperature is 3 to 6 degrees C., and the frost-free period is 40 to 60 days.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Hutchley, McIvey, Segura, and Tusel series.
Hutchley soils are shallow to bedrock.
McIvey soils have clayey-skeletal families.
Segura soils are very shallow or shallow to bedrock.
Tusel soils are deep and very deep to bedrock

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; medium or high runoff; moderate permeability; moderately high saturated hydraulic conductivity.

USE AND VEGETATION: Boneyard soils are used for livestock grazing and wildlife habitat. The potential native vegetation is mainly curlleaf mountainmahogany, mountain big sagebrush, and bluebunch wheatgrass. This site is correlated to Ecological Site R28BY032NV, Stony Mahogany Savanna.
