BOURBONAIS SERIES

The Bourbonais series consists of very deep, somewhat excessively drained soils that formed in silty over sandy alluvium on floodplains. Slope ranges from 0 to 3 percent. Mean annual temperature is about 53 degrees F. and mean annual precipitation is about 33 inches.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Coarse-silty over sandy or sandy-skeletal, mixed, superactive, mesic Fluventic Hapludolls

TYPICAL PEDON: Bourbonais-Bismarckgrove complex, 0 to 3 percent slopes, rarely flooded, in a cultivated field. (Colors are moist soil unless otherwise stated)

Ap--0 to 7 inches; very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) silt loam, grayish brown (10YR 5/2) dry; weak fine granular structure; soft, very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; common fine roots; neutral; abrupt smooth boundary.

A--7 to 12 inches; very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) silt loam, grayish brown (10YR 5/2) dry; weak fine subangular blocky structure; soft, very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; common fine roots; neutral; clear smooth boundary. (Combined thickness of A horizon ranges from 10 to 20 inches)

C--12 to 34 inches; dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) silt, light brownish gray (10YR 6/2) dry; massive; soft, very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; common fine roots; neutral; clear smooth boundary.

2C1--34 to 60 inches; stratified grayish brown (10YR 5/2) and light brownish gray (10YR 6/2), sandy loam, light gray (10YR 7/2) and very pale brown (10YR 8/2) dry; massive; loose, loose, nonsticky and nonplastic; few fine and very fine roots; neutral; abrupt smooth boundary.

2C2--60 to 80 inches; stratified grayish brown (10YR 5/2) and light brownish gray (10YR 6/2), sand, light gray (10YR 7/2) and very pale brown (10YR 8/2) dry; single grain; loose, loose, nonsticky and nonplastic; very fine roots; slightly acid.

COMPETING SERIES: There are no other competing series. A similar soil is the Grable series. The Grable series is calcareous and has a thinner mollic epipedon.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING:
Parent material: silty over sandy alluvium
Landform: flood plain step
Slopes: 0 to 2 percent
Elevation: 760 to 1040 feet
Mean annual temperature: 52 to 55 degrees F
Mean annual precipitation: 34 to 40 inches
Precipitation pattern: udic
Frost-free period: 170 to 190 days.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Belvue, Bismarckgrove, Eudora, Kimo, Stonehouse and Zeandale (p) soils. The Belvue and Eudora soils are coarse-silty and occupy similar landscape positions. The Belvue soils are calcareous between 20 to 40 inches. The Bismarckgrove soils are fine-silty and sit somewhat lower on the landscape. The Kimo soils are clayey over loamy and sit lower on the landscape. The Stonehouse soils are sandy and sit somewhat higher on the landscape. The Zeandale soils are coarse-silty and calcareous.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Somewhat excessively drained. Permeability is moderate in the upper part and rapid in the lower part. These soils are subjected to occasional or rare flooding. Runoff is slow.

USE AND VEGETATION: Native vegetation are woods and grasses. Now the soils are mainly cropped to corn, small grains, and soybeans.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Located on the intermediate floodplain complex of the Kansas River and is of limited extent.

SERIES ESTABLISHED: Jefferson County, Kansas, 1999

REMARKS: These soils were formerly mapped with the Eudora series. Pedon used is 94KS087550. Lab data was run at the Kansas State University Pedology Laboratory in Manhattan, Kansas. Lab samples were SS1580- SS1584. Diagnostic horizon recognized in this pedon is: mollic epipedon - zone from the surface to a depth of 12 inches (Ap and A horizons); Udic moisture regime.

Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in this pedon are:
Particle-size control section: The zone from 10 to 40 inches. (A, C horizons)
Mollic epipedon: The zone from 0 to 12 inches. (Ap, A horizons)
Lithologic discontinuity: At the upper boundary of the 2C horizon.
