TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine-silty, mixed, superactive, frigid Aquic Cumulic Haploxerolls
TYPICAL PEDON: Chiloquinot silt loam, pasture, on a south facing slope of 1 percent at 4,278 feet elevation. When described on May 21, 2003, the soils were moist to 43 inches and saturated below that depth. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted. All textures are apparent field textures)
A1--0 to 4 inches; grayish brown (10YR 5/2) silt loam, very dark brown (10YR 2/2) moist; moderate fine granular structure; soft, friable, nonsticky, slightly plastic; many very fine and fine roots; many fine tubular and many very fine irregular pores; neutral (pH 6.6); clear smooth boundary. (4 to 8 inches thick)
A2--4 to 8 inches; light brownish gray (10YR 6/2) silt loam, black (10YR 2/1) moist; weak thin platy structure; slightly hard, friable, nonsticky, slightly plastic; common very fine and many fine roots; many fine tubular and many very fine irregular pores; neutral (pH 6.8); clear smooth boundary. (2 to 8 inches thick)
A3--8 to 21 inches; gray (10YR 5/1) silt loam, black (10YR 2/1) moist; weak fine and medium subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, friable, slightly sticky, slightly plastic; common very fine and few fine roots; common fine tubular and very fine irregular pores; neutral (pH 7.2); abrupt smooth boundary. (8 to 14 inches thick)
AE--21 to 33 inches; gray (2.5Y 6/1) silt loam, very dark gray (10YR 3/1) moist; weak medium subangular blocky structure; hard, friable, slightly sticky, slightly plastic; few very fine roots; many very fine and few fine tubular pores; 2 percent fine distinct irregular dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4) moist, iron-manganese masses throughout and 2 percent fine faint spherical dark gray (2.5Y 4/1) moist, iron depletions throughout; slightly alkaline (pH 7.4); clear wavy boundary. (8 to 12 inches thick)
Eg1--33 to 45 inches; light gray (2.5Y 7/1) silt loam, very dark grayish brown (2.5Y 3/2) moist; massive; hard, friable, slightly sticky, slightly plastic; few very fine roots; common very fine and few fine irregular pores; 2 percent fine faint spherical dark gray (2.5Y 4/1) moist, iron depletions throughout and 5 percent fine distinct irregular dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/6) moist, iron-manganese masses throughout; slightly alkaline (pH 7.4); gradual wavy boundary. (10 to 14 inches thick)
Eg2--45 to 52 inches; light gray (2.5Y 7/1) very fine sandy loam, dark grayish brown (2.5Y 4/2) moist; massive; hard, friable, slightly sticky, slightly plastic; few very fine and irregular pores; 2 percent fine faint spherical dark gray (10YR 4/1) moist, iron depletions throughout and 10 percent fine distinct irregular dark yellowish brown (10YR 3/4) moist, iron-manganese masses throughout; neutral (pH 7.3); gradual wavy boundary. (3 to 8 inches thick)
Eg3--52 to 60 inches; white (2.5Y 8/1) silt loam, dark grayish brown (2.5Y 4/2) moist; massive; hard, friable, slightly sticky, slightly plastic; many very fine irregular pores; 2 percent fine faint spherical dark gray (10YR 4/1) moist, iron depletions throughout and 10 percent fine distinct irregular dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/6) moist, iron-manganese masses throughout; neutral (pH 7.3).
TYPE LOCATION: Klamath County, Oregon; about .5 mile north of Council Butte, north of the Sprague River, about 6 miles west of the town of Beatty, Oregon; about 2055 feet north and 2085 feet west of the southeast corner section of section 10, T 36 S, R 11 E; Sprague River East, Oregon USGS quadrangle; Latitude- 42 degrees, 27 minutes, 44.12 seconds N., Longitude - 121 degrees, 23 minutes, 48.89 seconds W.) ; UTM 631800 meters E, 4702347 meters N, zone 10 NAD83.
RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS:
Average annual soil temperature - 44 to 46 degrees F.
Moisture control section - 4 to 12 inches - dry for 60 to 90 days within the four month period following the summer solstice.
Mollic epipedon - 20 to 30 inches thick with an irregular decrease in organic carbon (Cumulic)
Depth to apparent high water table - 21 to 33 inches for 90 to 120 days in spring and summer
Base saturation in the mollic epipedon - 75 to 100 percent (by NH4OAc)

COMPETING SERIES: This is the Raynal (T) series. The Raynal soils have 5 to 15 percent calcium carbonate throughout the profile.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Chiloquinot soils are on narrow flood plains and stream terraces at elevations of 4,175 to 4,300 feet. The soils formed in alluvium derived from volcanic rock, diatomite and tephra. The climate is cool subhumid. The average annual precipitation ranges from 15 to 18 inches. The average January temperature is 27 degrees F.; the average July temperature is 62 degrees F.; and the average annual temperature is 43 to 46 degrees F. The frost-free period is 50 to 70 days.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Wolfbutte, Klamath, and Dilman soils. Wolfbutte soils are on terraces. They are well drained, have argillic horizons and have a duripan at depths of 20 to 40 inches. Klamath soils are in depressions on floodplains. They have redoximorphic features at the surface and are very poorly drained. Dilman soils are on floodplains. They are poorly drained, and have ashy loamy coarse sand textures at a depth of 15 inches
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Somewhat poorly drained; moderate permeability. The soils are occasionally flooded for brief durations from February to April. A seasonal high water table is at a depth of 21 to 33 inches from February to April.
USE AND VEGETATION: These soils are used for irrigated and dryland hay and pasture, and wildlife habitat. The series commonly supports silver sagebrush, green rabbitbrush, Idaho fescue, slender wheatgrass, meadow barley, iris and Sandberg bluegrass.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Basins near the southern fringe of the pumice mantled region in south-central Oregon, MLRA 21. The series is inextensive.

Particle-size control section - the zone from 10 to 40 inches (part of the A3, the AE, and part of the Eg1 horizons)
Aquic conditions - the zone from 21 to 60 inches (AE, Eg1, Eg2, and Eg3 horizons)
Although the series is associated with other series having Vitrandic surfaces, the series is not classified as Vitrandic because the surface has less than 30 percent coarse silt or coarser fine earth material.
