CLEARVIEW SERIES

The Clearview series consists of moderately deep, somewhat poorly drained, moderately slow permeable soils that formed in residuum weathered from acid sandstone with thin beds of clayey and sandy shales. These soils are on undulating to gently rolling hills of uplands of the Arkansas Valley and Ridges (MLRA 118B). Slopes range from 1 to 12 percent.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine-loamy, siliceous, semiactive, thermic Oxyaquic Hapludalfs

TYPICAL PEDON: Clearview fine sandy loam, 3 to 5 percent slopes. (Colors are for moist soil unless otherwise stated.)

A--0 to 8 inches; brown (10YR 4/3) fine sandy loam, pale brown (10YR 6/3) dry; weak fine granular structure; slightly hard, friable; slightly acid; gradual smooth boundary. (3 to 8 inches thick)

E--8 to 13 inches; yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) fine sandy loam, light yellowish brown (10YR 6/4) dry; weak fine granular structure; slightly hard, friable; slightly acid, clear smooth boundary. (0 to 11 inches thick)

BE--13 to 23 inches; yellowish brown (10YR 5/6) loam, brownish yellow (10YR 6/6) dry; moderate medium granular structure; slightly hard, friable; moderately acid; gradual smooth boundary. (0 to 11 inches thick)

Bt--23 to 35 inches; yellowish brown (10YR 5/6) sandy clay loam; weak medium subangular blocky structure; hard, firm; common patchy clay films; few medium distinct strong brown (7.5YR 5/6), and few fine distinct light yellowish brown (10YR 6/4) and red (2.5YR 4/8) redoximorphic concentration masses; moderately acid; abrupt smooth boundary. (5 to 25 inches thick)

R--35 inches; red hard unweathered sandstone, the upper part is red and strong brown soft weathered sandstone.

TYPE LOCATION: Okfuskee County, Oklahoma; about 7 miles north of Pharoah; 1780 feet east and 1050 feet south of the Northwest corner of section 15, T. 12 N., R. 11 E.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: The thickness of the solum is 20 to 40 inches. Depth to hard consolidated unweathered bedrock (lithic contact) is 20 to 40 inches.

The A horizon has hue of 7.5YR or 10YR, value of 3 or 4, and chroma of 2 to 4. Texture is fine sandy loam.

The E horizon has hue of 7.5YR or 10YR, value of 4 or 5, and chroma of 3 or 4. Reaction is slightly acid to very strongly acid unless limed. Texture is fine sandy loam.

The BE horizon has hue of 7.5YR or 10YR, value of 4 or 5, and chroma of 4 to 6. Reaction is slightly acid to very strongly acid. Texture is fine sandy loam or loam.

The Bt horizon has hue of 10YR to 2.5YR, value of 3 to 6, and chroma of 4 to 8. Reaction ranges from very strongly acid to neutral. Redoximorphic concentration masses are in shades of red or brown. The texture is fine sandy loam, loam, sandy clay loam, or clay loam. Gravel content ranges from 0 to 15 percent. Structure is subangular blocky or granular.

Where present, the BC horizon has hue of 10YR to 2.5YR, value of 3 to 6, and chroma of 4 to 8. Reaction ranges from very strongly acid to neutral. Redoximorphic concentration masses are in shades of red or brown. The texture is fine sandy loam, loam, sandy clay loam, clay loam, gravelly fine sandy loam, gravelly loam, gravelly sandy clay loam, or gravelly clay loam. Gravel content ranges from 0 to 25 percent. The thickness is 0 to 8 inches thick.

COMPETING SERIES: There are no other series in this family.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Clearview soils are on undulating to gently rolling hills of uplands that has somewhat broken topography. Slopes range from 1 to 12 percent. The soils formed in residuum from acid sandstone with thin beds of clayey and sandy shales. Mean annual air temperature ranges from 59 to 63 degrees F., and mean annual precipitation range from 35 to 45 inches; Thornthwaite annual P-E index ranges from 64 to 80. Elevation ranges from 700 to 1100 feet.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Bates, Endsaw, Hector, and Shermore soils. Bates soils occur on similar landscapes but a have mollic epipedon. Endsaw and Shermore soils are deeper than 60 inches. Hector soils occur lower in the landscape and have bedrock within a depth of 20 inches.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Somewhat poorly drained. Permeability is moderately slow. Runoff is high to very high. This soil has episaturation from perched water table at depths of 20 to 40 inches from November to May.

USE AND VEGETATION: Most of the acreage is in native vegetation that is deciduous hardwoods. Small areas of this series are used for pasture or hayland. A smaller acreage was cropped, but most is now abandoned.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: East central Oklahoma. The series is not extensive.

SOIL SURVEY REGIONAL OFFICE (SSRO) RESPONSIBLE: MORGANTOWN, WEST VIRGINIA

SERIES ESTABLISHED: Pittsburg County, Oklahoma; 1995.

REMARKS: Soil Interpretation Record: Series OK0415

This series was formerly included in the Linker series. Soil reaction ranges for the Bt and BC horizons were expanded in 2003 to include very strongly acid, strongly acid, slightly acid, and neutral reactions.

Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in this series are:

Ochric epipedon - the zone from the surface of the soil to a depth of 8 inches (A horizons).

Argillic horizon - the zone from approximately 23 to 35 inches (Bt horizon).

Lithic contact - 35 inches.

Udic moisture regime.
