COBERLY SERIES

The Coberly series consists of moderately deep, well drained soils that formed in residuum derived from sandstone. Coberly soils are on mesa tops, ridges, and benches. Slopes range from 0 to 65 percent. Mean annual precipitation is about 22 inches and mean annual temperature is about 42 degrees F.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Coarse-loamy, mixed, superactive, frigid Pachic Haplustolls

TYPICAL PEDON: Coberly fine sandy loam - Brushy Loam range site. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted.)

A1--0 to 6 inches; brown (10YR 5/3) fine sandy loam, very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) moist; single grain; loose, nonsticky and nonplastic; neutral (pH 7.1); clear smooth boundary. (4 to 10 inches thick)

A2--6 to 24 inches; brown (10YR 5/3) fine sandy loam; very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) moist; weak medium subangular blocky structure; soft, very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; neutral (pH 7.1); abrupt wavy boundary. (16 to 22 inches thick)

Cr--24 inches; weathered sandstone.

TYPE LOCATION: Gunnison County, Colorado; in the SE1/4 NE1/4 of Sec. 29, T. 13 S., R. 90 W. Latitude: 38 degrees, 53 minutes, 36 seconds north; Longitude: 107 degrees, 27 minutes, 41 seconds west.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: Mean annual soil temperature ranges from 42 to 45 degrees F. Depth to a paralithic contact ranges from 20 to 40 inches. The particle size control section is sandy loam or loam, but clay ranges from 8 to 18 percent. Rock fragments range from 0 to 15 percent. Reaction is neutral or mildly alkaline throughout the profile. The mollic epipedon ranges from 16 to 30 inches thick.

The A horizon has hue of 2.5Y through 7.5YR, value of 4 or 5, 2 or 3 moist, and chroma of 2 or 3.

COMPETING SERIES: These are the Bikeyah (NM), Breece (CO), Chrishall (NM), Dotsero (CO), Hedoes (MT), Jarmillo (NM), Klizhin (NM), Parshall (ND), Ruso (ND), and the Tuntsa (NM) series. The Breece, Chrishall, Dotsero, Hedoes, Klizhin, Parshall, Jarmillo, and Tuntsa soils are very deep. The Ruso soils are very deep, and have skeletal sandy materials at depths of 20 to 40 inches. The Bikeyah soils are very deep and somewhat poorly drained.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Coberly soils are on mesa tops, ridges, and benches. Slopes range from 0 to 65 percent. The soils formed in residuum derived from sandstone. The mean annual precipitation is 18 to 25 inches. Mean annual air temperature is 40 to 43 degrees F.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Falcon, Fughes, Herm, and Kolob soils. Falcon soils are shallow. Fughes, Herm, and Kolob soils are deep and occur on nearby side slopes.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; slow to medium runoff; moderately rapid to moderate permeability.

USE AND VEGETATION: These soils are used principally for livestock grazing and wildlife habitat. Native vegetation consists of Gambel oak, Utah serviceberry, grasses, forbs, and other shrubs.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Western central Colorado. The series is of small extent.

MLRA SOIL SURVEY REGIONAL OFFICE (MO) RESPONSIBLE: Bozeman, Montana

SERIES PROPOSED: Routt County Area, Colorado; 1975.

REMARKS: The 5/87 revision documented a change in type location from the Routt County Area. Last updated by the state 5/93. Diagnostic features include a mollic epipedon from 0 to 24 inches, and a paralithic contact at 24 inches.
