JARMILLO SERIES

The Jarmillo series consists of deep, well drained soils that formed in alluvium, colluvium and lacustrine sediment derived mainly from rhyolite and tuff. Jarmillo soils are on terraces. Slopes are 1 to 20 percent. Mean annual precipitation is about 23 inches and mean annual temperature is about 44 degrees F.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Ashy, glassy, frigid Vitrandic Haplustolls

TYPICAL PEDON: Jarmillo loam--mountain grasslands. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted.)

A1--0 to 4 inches; dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) loam, very dark brown (10YR 2/2) moist; weak fine granular structure; slightly hard, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; many fine, common very fine and few medium roots; slightly acid; clear smooth boundary. (3 to 5 inches thick)

A2--4 to 13 inches; dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) loam, very dark brown (10YR 2/2) moist; weak medium subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; common fine and few medium roots; slightly acid; clear smooth boundary. (8 to 15 inches thick)

A3--13 to 20 inches; grayish brown (10YR 5/2) loam, very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) moist; weak fine subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; common fine roots; slightly acid; clear wavy boundary. (5 to 10 inches thick)

BA--20 to 26 inches; light brownish gray (10YR 6/2) loam, very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) moist; weak fine subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; few fine roots; neutral; gradual wavy boundary. (4 to 7 inches thick)

Bw1--26 to 36 inches; matrix is very pale brown (10YR 7/3) loam, brown (10YR 4/3) moist; weak fine subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; lamellae (12) are 0.03 to 0.15 of an inch thick, brown (10YR 5/3) dry and brown (10YR 4/3) moist; few fine and medium roots; neutral; gradual wavy boundary. (2 to 6 inches thick)

Bw2--36 to 41 inches; matrix is light yellowish brown (10YR 6/4) fine sandy loam, yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) moist; massive; slightly hard, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; lamellae (5) are 0.17 to 0.25 of an inch thick, grayish brown (10YR 5/2) dry and dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) moist; few very fine and medium roots; neutral; abrupt wavy boundary. (2 to 6 inches thick)

2Bw3--41 to 51 inches; matrix is pale yellow (2.5Y 8/2) clay loam, light yellowish brown (2.5Y 6/4) moist; weak coarse prismatic structure; hard, firm, sticky and plastic; organic stains on prism faces; neutral; abrupt wavy boundary. (0 to 11 inches thick)

3C--51 to 67 inches; matrix pale yellow (2.5Y 8/2) very fine sandy loam, light yellowish brown (2.5Y 6/4) moist; massive; hard, firm, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; lamella (1) 0.12 inch thick; grayish brown (10YR 5/2) dry and very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) moist; neutral; clear wavy boundary.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS:
Reaction: slightly acid to neutral
Clay content of control section: Average 8 to 18 percent

A horizon - Hue: 2.5Y or 10YR Value: 4 or 5 dry, 2 or 3 moist Chroma: 2 or 3

B horizon - Hue: 2.5Y or 10YR Value: 6 through 8 dry, 3 through 6 moist Chroma: 2 through 4 Fine-earth fraction: fine sandy loam through clay loam (with weighted average content of 10 to 18 percent.

C horizon - Hue: 2.5Y or 10YR Value: 6 through 8 dry, 5 through 7 moist Chroma: 2 through 4 Fine-earth fraction: loam, very fine sandy loam and fine sandy loam

Few to many, fine to medium, distinct mottles occur at depths greater than 40 inches in some pedons. Lamellae ar common in the B horizon. They are thin and do not have significantly different textures from the matrix. A few horizons have gravelly textures.

COMPETING SERIES: These are the Breece, Coberly, Dotsero, Hedoes, Parshall and Ruso series. Breece soils are moist in May and June. Coberly soils have weathered bedrock at depths of 20 to 40 inches. Dotsero, Hedoes, and Parshall soils are calcareous in the lower part of the solum and have secondary accumulation of carbonate. Ruso soils have stratified sand and gravel within 40 inches.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Jarmillo soils are developed in alluvium, colluvium and lacustrine sediments on terraces that have slopes of 1 to 20 percent. They formed in deposits derived dominantly from rhyolite and tuff. Elevations are 8,000 to 8,800 feet. The climate is subhumid continental with a mean annual precipitation of about 20 to 25 inches with moist winters and late summers and dry spring. The mean annual temperature is about 42 to 45 degrees F., and the frost-free period is about 70 to 100 days.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Cajete (T), Jarola (T), Hesperus, Seco (T), and Tranquilar (T) series. Cajete soils are formed in pumice and are ashy-skeletal. Jarola soils are poorly drained and fine-textured. Hesperus and Seco soils have Bt horizons. Tranquilar soils have fine textures in the Bt horizon and are somewhat poorly drained.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; slow runoff; moderately permeability.

USE AND VEGETATION: Jarmillo soils are used for grazing. The natural vegetation is Arizona fescue, bluegrass, pine dropseed, and sedges.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Northcentral New Mexico. The series is of small extent.
