CORNVILLE SERIES

The Cornville series consists of deep, well-drained soils that formed in old alluvium from sandstone, limestone and some basalt. These soils are on fans and terraces. The mean annual precipitation is about 11 inches and the mean annual air temperature is about 62 degrees F.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine-loamy, mixed, superactive, thermic Typic Calciargids

TYPICAL PEDON: Cornville fine sandy loam, rangeland. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted.)

A--0 to 3 inches; brown (7.5YR 5/4) fine sandy loam, reddish brown (5YR 4/4) moist; weak medium platy structure parting to moderate fine granular structure; slightly hard, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; few fine roots; many very fine irregular pores; moderately alkaline (pH 8.2); clear smooth boundary. (1 to 5 inches thick)

Bt1--3 to 10 inches; yellowish red (5YR 5/6) sandy clay loam, dark reddish brown (5YR 3/4) moist; weak medium subangular blocky structure; hard, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; common fine roots; common very fine and fine tubular and irregular pores; common faint clay films in pores, few faint clay films on faces of peds; moderately alkaline (pH 8.2); clear smooth boundary. (4 to 8 inches thick)

Bt2--10 to 20 inches; yellowish red (5YR 5/6) sandy clay loam, dark reddish brown (5YR 3/4) moist; weak medium prismatic structure parting to moderate medium subangular blocky structure; hard, friable, slightly sticky and plastic; few fine roots; many very fine and fine irregular and tubular pores; many faint clay films on faces of peds; moderately alkaline (pH 8.2); clear wavy boundary. (8 to 13 inches thick)

Bt3--20 to 30 inches; reddish brown (5YR 5/4) sandy clay loam, dark reddish brown (5YR 3/4) moist; moderate medium and coarse subangular blocky structure; hard, friable, slightly sticky and plastic; few fine roots; many very fine and fine irregular and tubular pores; common faint clay films in pores and on faces of peds; few fine white filaments of lime; slightly effervescent; moderately alkaline (pH 8.4); abrupt wavy boundary. (8 to 15 inches thick)

Bk--30 to 35 inches; pinkish white (5YR 8/2) gravelly loam, light reddish brown (5YR 6/3) moist; massive; hard, friable, sticky and slightly plastic; few fine roots; few very fine tubular pores; more than 15 percent CaC03; violently effervescent; moderately alkaline (pH 8.4).

Bt1 horizon
Hue: 7.5YR or 5YR
Value: 5 or 6 dry, 3 or 4 moist
Chroma: 3 to 6.

Bt2 horizon
Texture: sandy loam, or sandy clay loam
Clay content: 18 to 35 percent clay, and more than 50 percent sand.

COMPETING SERIES: These are Blackmagic (CA), Brenda (NM), Dona Ana (NM), Elizario (NM), Hap (NM), Jagerson (AZ), Kidwell (NM), Madurez (NM), McNew (NM), Mohave (AZ), Nutt (NM), Poachie (AZ) and Tres Hermanos (NM) series.
Blackmagic soils are intermittently moist in the moisture control section for 10 to 20 days following the summer convection storms.
Brenda soils have gravelly sand or fine sand in the lower part of the profile below the argillic horizon.
Dona Ana soils are calcareous through out and have argillic horizon that are less than 20 inches thick.
Elizario and McNew soils contain 18 to 27 percent clay in the PSCS
Mohave soils contain less than 50 percent sand in the PSCS.
Jagerson soils contain 15 to 35 percent rock fragments in the particle size control section.
Kidwell soil contain 15 to 35 percent rock fragment in the PSCS.
Nutt soils are in the 7 to 10 inch precipitation zone and contain less than 50 percent sand in the PSCS.
Tres Hermanos soils are calcareous throughout.
Hap soils have more than 15 percent gravel in the particle size control section.
Madurez soils have Bt horizons thinner than 10 inches and sola thinner than 25 inches.
Poachie soils contain 15 to 35 percent rock fragment in the PSCS, calcic horizon beginning at 14 inches and contain 20 to 27 percent clay in the PSCS.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: The Cornville soils are on fans and terraces at elevations of 3,000 to 4,000 feet. Slopes are dominantly 1 to 3 percent and range from 0 to 15 percent. The soils formed in old alluvium from sandstone and limestone and some basalt. The mean annual precipitation ranges from 10 to 12 inches. The mean annual temperature ranges from about 60 degrees to 65 degrees F., the January mean is about 41 degrees F., and the July mean is about 80 degrees F. The frost-free season is from 180 to 240 days.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Anthony, Bridge, Gila, Glendale, Hantz and Retriever soils. Anthony, Bridge, Gila, Glendale and Hantz soils lack argillic horizons. Retriever soils have bedrock at shallow depths.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well-drained; medium to slow runoff; moderately slow permeability.

USE AND VEGETATION: This soil is used for winter range, but some areas are irrigated and produce alfalfa, corn and other crops. Native vegetation is mesquite, creosotebush, snakeweed, cacti, tobosa grass, sideoats grama, black grama and algerita.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Central and southern Arizona. The series is of small extent. MLRA 38 & 40.
