TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine-loamy, mixed, superactive, thermic Typic Calciargids
TYPICAL PEDON: Kidwell very gravelly sandy loam, rangeland and wildlife habitat. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted.) The soil surface is partially covered by approximately 45 percent pebbles .

(1 to 2 inches thick)
A2--1 to 9 inches; yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) gravelly sandy loam, brown (10YR 4/3) moist; weak medium subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, very friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; many very fine roots; many very fine tubular pores; 15 percent pebbles; moderately alkaline (pH 8.0); clear wavy boundary. (5 to 8 inches thick)
Bt--9 to 15 inches; yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) gravelly sandy clay loam, dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4) moist; moderate medium subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, very friable, moderately sticky and moderately plastic; common very fine roots; many very fine tubular pores; few faint clay films on faces of peds and coating sand grains; 20 percent pebbles; moderately alkaline (pH 8.2); clear wavy boundary. (4 to 13 inches thick)
Btk--15 to 31 inches; yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) gravelly sandy clay loam, dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4); moderate medium subangular blocky structure; hard, friable, moderately sticky and moderately plastic; few very fine roots; common very fine tubular pores; common distinct clay films on faces of peds; many fine soft calcium carbonate masses; 15 percent pebbles; strongly effervescent; moderately alkaline (pH 8.2); clear wavy boundary. (14 to 35 inches thick)
Bk--31 to 60 inches; pale brown (10YR 6/3) gravelly sandy loam, brown (10YR 4/3) moist; massive; hard, friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; few very fine roots; few very fine tubular pores; many coarse and medium hard calcium carbonate masses; 30 percent pebbles; strongly effervescent; moderately alkaline (pH 8.4).

COMPETING SERIES: These are the
Blackmagic, (CA),
Cornville (AZ),
Dona Ana (NM),
Hap (NM),
Jagerson (AZ),
Madurez (NM), McNew (NM),
Mohave (AZ), Nutt (NM),
Poachie (AZ) and
Tres Hermanos (NM) series. Blackmagic and Pochie soils average 5 to 15 percent rock fragments in the control section. Cornville, Dona Ana, Madurez and Tres Hermanos soils are moist in the control section for more than 20 days in the summer. Jagerson soils have a calcic horizon that occurs below the argillic horizon. Madurez soils have Bt Horizons with hues of 2.5YR or 5YR. McNew and Nutt soils have 0 to 5 percent rock fragments in the control section. Dona Ana and Tres Hermanos soils are calcareous to the surface. Madurez soils lack a Btk horizon and have an argillic horizon thinner than 10 inches.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Kidwell soils are on fan remnants. These soils form in alluvium derived from mixed volcanic sources. Slope ranges from 2 to 8 percent. Elevations are 2,500 to 4,100 feet. The climate is hot and arid with cool, moist winters and hot, dry summers. The mean annual precipitation is 5 to 7 inches; mean annual temperature is 57 to 63 degrees F., and the frost-free season is 180 to 240 days.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the
Arizo,
Crosgrain,
Lanip and
Tenwell soils. Arizo and Crosgrain soils do not have an argillic horizon. Arizo soils are sandy-skeletal. Crosgrain soils and Tenwell soils have duripans. Arizo, Crosgrain, Lanip and Tenwell soils do not have calcic horizons.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; medium runoff; moderately slow permeability.
USE AND VEGETATION: These soils are used for rangeland and wildlife habitat. The present vegetation is mainly big galleta, bush muhly, Indian ricegrass, creosotebush, ephedra, winterfat and range ratany.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Mojave Desert of southern Nevada. These soils are not extensive. MLRA 30
