DODY SERIES

The Dody series consists of very deep, very poorly drained soils that formed in a mantle of sandy outwash or sandy lacustrine deposits over clayey lacustrine deposits underlain by sandy outwash or sandy lacustrine deposits on lake plains or outwash plains. Permeability is moderately rapid or rapid in the sandy mantle, extremely slow to slow in the clayey deposits, and rapid in the underlying sandy substratum. Slopes range from 0 to 2 percent. Mean annual precipitation is about 30 inches. Mean annual air temperature is about 42 degrees F.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Clayey, smectitic, frigid Arenic Albaqualfs

TYPICAL PEDON: Dody muck,on a north-facing plane 1 percent slope, in a marsh, at an elevation of about 985 feet. (Colors are for moist soil unless otherwise stated.)

Oa--0 to 3 inches; black (N 2.5/) muck (sapric material); about 10 percent fiber and 5 percent rubbed; strong fine granular structure; very friable; many very fine to medium roots; many fine tubular pores; fibers composed of sedges; very strongly acid; abrupt wavy boundary. (0 to 7 inches thick)

Eg--3 to 9 inches; grayish brown (10YR 5/2) sand, light brownish gray (10YR 6/2) dry; weak coarse subangular blocky structure; very friable; common very fine to medium roots; few fine tubular and common very fine interstitial pores; common medium prominent strong brown (7.5YR 5/6) and few fine prominent yellowish red (5YR 5/8) masses of iron accumulation; strongly acid; gradual wavy boundary. (3 to 21 inches thick)

Bw--9 to 20 inches; brown (10YR 5/3) fine sand; weak coarse subangular blocky structure; very friable; few very fine to medium roots; common fine interstitial pores; many coarse prominent strong brown (7.5YR 5/6) and common medium prominent yellowish red (5YR 5/8) masses of iron accumulation and many coarse faint grayish brown (10YR 5/2) iron depletions; moderately acid; abrupt wavy boundary. (0 to 11 inches thick)

Bg--20 to 23 inches; grayish brown (10YR 5/2) loamy sand; weak medium subangular blocky structure; very friable; breaks to weak thick plates along horizontal cleavage planes inherited from the parent material; few very fine roots; few very fine and fine tubular pores; many medium prominent strong brown (7.5YR 5/6), few fine prominent strong brown (7.5YR 5/8), and many coarse distinct brown (7.5YR 5/3) masses of iron accumulation; strongly acid; abrupt wavy boundary. (2 to 20 inches thick)

2Btg1--23 to 39 inches; gray (5Y 5/1) clay; strong very fine angular blocky structure; firm; few very fine roots; few very fine tubular pores; common pressure faces; many faint dark gray (5Y 4/1) clay films on faces of peds; many medium prominent strong brown (7.5YR 5/8) masses of iron accumulation; very strongly acid; abrupt wavy boundary.

2Btg2--39 to 47 inches; gray (N 5/) clay; moderate coarse prismatic structure parting to weak medium angular blocky; firm; few very fine roots; few very fine tubular pores; many prominent dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) clay films on faces of peds; very strongly acid; abrupt wavy boundary. (Combined thickness of the 2Btg horizons ranges from 20 to 40 inches)

3C1--47 to 58 inches; brown (7.5YR 4/3) loamy sand; massive; very friable; very strongly acid; clear wavy boundary. (0 to 11 inches thick)

3C2--58 to 80 inches; brown (7.5YR 4/4) sand; single grain; loose; strongly acid.

TYPE LOCATION: Burnett County, Wisconsin; about 1 mile south of Webster; 150 feet north and 10 feet west of the southeast corner of sec. 17, T. 39 N., R. 16 W.; USGS Siren East WI quad.; lat. 45 degrees, 51minutes, 39seconds, N. and long. 92 degrees, 21seconds, 54minutes, W.; NAD27.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: (Unless otherwise stated, thickness and depth are measured from the top of the mineral soil.) Thickness of the sandy mantle and depth to clay range from 20 to 40 inches. Depth to the base of the argillic horizon and to the underlying sandy outwash ranges from 40 to 60 inches. The clay fraction has smectitic mineralogy. Rock fragments typically are absent but volume of gravel ranges from 0 to 1 percent throughout the pedon. Reaction naturally ranges from very strongly acid to moderately acid in the sandy mantle but ranges to neutral, where the soil is limed. Reaction ranges from very strongly acid to slightly acid in the clayey deposits and in the sandy substratum.

The O horizon has hue of 7.5YR or 10YR or it is neutral in hue. Value is 2 to 3 and chroma is 0 to 2.

Some pedons have an A horizon with hue of 7.5YR or 10YR or the hue is neutral. Value is 2 to 3 and chroma is 0 to 2. Cultivated pedons have an Ap horizon with colors like the A horizon. The A or Ap horizon is sand, loamy sand, fine sand, loamy fine sand or the mucky analogs.

The Eg horizon has hue of 10YR or 2.5Y, value of value of 4 to 6, and chroma of 1 or 2. It is sand, fine sand, loamy sand, or loamy fine sand.

The Bw horizon has value of 4 to 6 and chroma of 3 or 4. It is sand, fine sand, loamy sand, or loamy fine sand.

The Bg horizon has hue of 10YR, 2.5Y, or 5Y; value of 4 to 6; and chroma of 1 or 2. It is sand, fine sand, loamy sand, or loamy fine sand.

The 2Btg horizon has hue of 2.5Y or 5Y or 5G or it is neutral in hue. Value is 4 to 6 and chroma is 0 or 1. It is typically clay or silty clay but some pedons have subhorizons of clay loam or silty clay loam. The weighted average clay content of the argillic horizon ranges from 50 to 80 percent.

The 3C horizon has hue of 7.5YR or 10YR, value of 3 to 5, and chroma of 3 or 4. Value and chroma of 3 do not occur together. It is sand, loamy sand, fine sand, or loamy fine sand.

COMPETING SERIES: There are no competing series.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Dody soils are on lake plains. Slope gradients range from 0 to 2 percent. Dody soils formed in a mantle of sandy outwash or sandy lacustrine deposits over clayey lacustrine deposits underlain by sandy outwash or sandy lacustrine deposits on lake plains or outwash plains. Mean annual precipitation is 28 to 32 inches. Mean annual temperature is 39 to 43 degrees F. The frost free period ranges from about 110 to 130 days. Elevation ranges from 900 to 1100 feet.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Karlsborg(T), Meenon(T), and Perida(T) series. The moderately well drained Karlsborg and Perida soils and the somewhat poorly drained Meenon soils form a drainage sequence with Dody soils.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Very poorly drained. Runoff is very low. Permeability is moderately rapid or rapid in the sandy mantle, extremely slow to slow in the clayey deposits, and rapid in the underlying sandy substratum. Dody soils have a perched seasonal high water table from 1 foot above to 1 foot below the surface for long periods at some time from September to June in most years.

USE AND VEGETATION: These soils are in wetland. Native vegetation is mostly marsh grasses and sedges with some shrubs, such as alder and willow.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Northwestern Wisconsin. This soil is of small extent.

MLRA SOIL SURVEY REGIONAL OFFICE (MO) RESPONSIBLE: St. Paul, Minnesota.
