TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine-loamy, mixed, superactive, mesic Cumulic Hapludolls
TYPICAL PEDON: Dameron silt loam - on a 1 percent slope in a cultivated field at an elevation of 540 feet. (Colors are for moist soil unless otherwise stated.)
Ap--0 to 8 inches; dark brown (10YR 3/3) silt loam, brown (10YR 5/3) dry; weak fine granular structure; very friable; common very fine roots; neutral; clear smooth boundary. (6 to 12 inches thick)
Bw--8 to 28 inches; dark brown (10YR 3/3) silt loam, brown (10YR 5/3) dry; weak very fine subangular blocky structure; very friable; few very fine roots; 2 percent chert gravel; neutral; clear wavy boundary. (18 to 65 inches thick)
2C--28 to 60 inches; brown (10YR 4/3) very gravelly silty clay loam; massive; friable; 40 percent chert gravel; about 10 percent chert cobbles; neutral.
TYPE LOCATION: Lincoln County, Missouri; about 2 miles north of Hawk Point; 600 feet east and 1,000 feet south of the northwest corner, sec. 22, T. 49 N., R. 2 W.; USGS Truxton quadrangle; lat. 39 degrees 00 minutes 14 seconds N. and long. 91 degrees 07 minutes 38 seconds W..
RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: Thickness of the mollic epipedon commonly ranges from 24 to 36 inches, but extends to 80 inches or more in some pedons. Depth to gravelly and very gravelly alluvium ranges from 15 to 40 inches. These soils average less than 20 percent sand in the upper 1/3 of the particle size control section. The mean annual soil temperature at 20 inches is 55 to 59 degrees F..
The A and Bw horizons have hue of 7.5YR or 10YR, value of 2 or 3 and 4 or 5 dry and chroma of 2 or 3. The A horizon is silt loam or silty clay loam and reaction ranges from strongly acid to neutral. The Bw horizon is silt loam, silty clay loam, or clay loam in the upper part and the gravelly or very gravelly analogues of these textures in the lower part. Reaction of the Bw horizon also ranges from strongly acid to neutral.
The 2C horizon has value of 3 or 4 and chroma of 2 to 4. Texture is the gravelly, very gravelly, or extremely gravelly analogues of silty clay loam, loam or sandy clay loam, but can be the gravelly or very gravelly analogues of clay loam or clay below depths of 36 inches. Reaction ranges from moderately acid to neutral. Rock fragments are dominantly chert.
COMPETING SERIES: These are the Brouillett, Olmitz, Racket, Ross, Spillville, and Terril series. Brouillett soils are somewhat poorly drained and have Bg horizons, and have a mean annual temperature of 50 to 54 degrees F.. Olmitz and Terril soils have cambic horizons and have a mean annual temperature of less then 54 degrees F.. Racket soils have less than 15 percent rock fragments in the upper 40 inches of the control section. Ross soils average more than 20 percent sand in the upper one-third of the particle size control section and have free carbonates from 24 to 45 inches. Spillville soils have less than 15 percent rock fragments in the upper 40 inches of the series control section and have a mean annual temperature of less than 50 degrees F..
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Dameron soils are on flood plains of small streams near active channels. They formed in silty and gravelly alluvium. Slopes range from 0 to 3 percent. The mean annual temperature ranges from 53 to 58 degrees F, and mean annual precipitation ranges from 35 to 45 inches.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Cedargap, and Sturkie soils. Cedargap soils are loamy-skeletal and are near the heads of drainages. Sturkie soils are fine-silty and are in slighly higher positions.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained. Runoff is low. Permeability is moderate or moderately slow. These soils are subject to rare to frequent flooding.
USE AND VEGETATION: Most areas are used for cultivated crops and pasture. A few areas are in woodland. Native vegetation is hardwoods.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Dameron soils are of moderate extent in southern (MLRAs 116A, 116B, and 115) Missouri.
