GENTRY SERIES

The Gentry series consists of very poorly drained, moderately permeable soils that formed in loamy marine sediments. They are in narrow to broad drainageways, flood plains, and shallow depressions in central and southern Peninsular Florida. These soils are subject to frequent flooding and water stands above the surface for 6 or more months during the summer and fall. Slopes range from 0 to 2 percent.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Loamy, siliceous, active, hyperthermic Arenic Argiaquolls

TYPICAL PEDON: Gentry fine sand in a cypress swamp drainageway. (Colors are for moist soil unless otherwise stated.)

A11--0 to 7 inches; black (10YR 2/1) fine sand with few fine faint very dark gray (10YR 3/1) mottles; moderate medium granular structure; friable; many fine, medium and coarse roots; few medium coarse light brownish gray (10YR 6/2) pockets of fine sand with many uncoated sand grains; strongly acid; clear wavy boundary. (6 to 10 inches thick)

A12--7 to 24 inches; black (10YR 2/1) fine sand; common medium distinct very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) and gray (10YR 5/1) mottles; moderate, medium granular structure; friable; common coarse distinct light brownish gray (10YR 6/2) pockets of fine sand; many fine, medium, and coarse roots; strongly acid; clear irregular boundary. (14 to 18 inches thick)

B21tg--24 to 37 inches; gray (10YR 5/1) fine sandy loam; common medium, distinct yellowish brown (10YR 5/4, 5/6) and few fine faint very dark gray and dark gray mottles; weak medium subangular blocky structure; sticky; few medium and coarse roots; common coarse distinct very dark gray (10YR 3/1) vertical tongues of fine sand extend from overlying horizon; common fine and medium distinct light gray (10YR 7/1) pockets of fine sand; sand grains are coated and bridged with clay; medium acid; gradual wavy boundary. (10 to 18 inches thick)

B22tg--37 to 64 inches; gray (10YR 5/1) fine sandy loam; few fine faint dark gray (10YR 4/1) and common coarse prominent brownish yellow (10YR 6/6, 6/8) mottles; weak medium subangular blocky structure; sticky; few medium and coarse roots; many medium faint grayish brown (10YR 5/2) and light gray (10YR 7/1) pockets of fine sand; sand grains are bridged and coated with clay; medium acid; gradual irregular boundary. (20 to 39 inches thick)

Cg--64 to 80 inches; light gray (10YR 6/1) loamy fine sand; few fine distinct yellow (10YR 7/6) mottles; single grained, non-sticky; many coarse faint light gray (10YR 7/1) pockets of fine sand; slightly acid.

TYPE LOCATION: Osceola County, Florida; in a cypress swamp drainageway, 1.75 miles southeast of Lake Russell, 1.9 miles west of South Port Canal, and 5.5 miles south of Kissimmee Park. SW1/4SE1/4SW1/4 sec. 23, T. 27 S., R. 29 E.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: Solum thickness ranges from 50 to more than 80 inches. Reaction ranges from strongly acid to neutral in the A horizon, medium acid to moderately alkaline in the B2t
horizon and slightly acid to moderately alkaline in the C horizon.

The A horizon has hue of 10YR, value 2 or 3, chroma 1 or 2 or hue of N, value 1 or 2. Some pedons have few to common, fine to coarse mottles of very dark gray, gray of grayish brown and pockets of gray, light gray, white or grayish brown uncoated sand grains. Texture is sand or fine sand. Thickness ranges from 20 to 28 inches.

The B2tg horizon has hue of 10YR, value 3 through 5, chroma 1 or 2; hue 5Y, value 3 or 4 and chroma of 1 or 2; hue 2.5Y, value 3 or 4 and chroma 2 or hue N, value 3 or 4. Tongues of black or very
dark gray from the A horizon extend into this horizon. Tongues range from 1/2 to 2 inches in diameter and from 1 1/4 to 30 inches in length. Few to common, fine to coarse gray, grayish brown and olive gray pockets of sand or fine sand are in this horizon in some pedons. Mottles of yellow, gray, brown and olive are also is this horizon in some pedons. Texture, excluding tongues, is sandy loam, fine sandy loam, or sandy clay loam. Combined texture is loamy fine sand or fine sandy loam.

The Cg horizon has hue of 10YR, value 4 through 7, chroma 1 or 2; hue 2.5Y, value 4 through 6, chroma 2; or hue N, value 4 through 6. Texture ranges from sand to fine sandy loam.

COMPETING SERIES: Floridana is the only other series in this family. Floridana soils have an albic horizon.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Gentry soils are in narrow to broad drainageways, flood plains, and depressional areas in central and southern Florida. Slope gradients are less than 2 percent. Near
the type location, average annual precipitation is about 53 inches
and is unevenly distributed throughout the year. Most rainfall occurs during the summer months from June through September. Mean annual temperature is about 72 degrees F.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Floridana series and, in addition, the Delray, Nittaw, Riviera, Tomoka, and Winder series. Delray soils have A horizons 40 to 80 inches thick. Riviera and Winder soils lack mollic epipedons and have glossic properties. Nittaw soils have clayey argillic horizons. Tomoka soils are organic.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Gentry soils are very poorly drained. Permeability is rapid in the A horizons and moderately rapid to moderate in the B2t horizons. The water table is within depths of 10 inches or is above the soils surface for more than 6 months of most years. Flooding occurs frequently during the summer rainy season.

USE AND VEGETATION: Some areas of this soil have been cleared and used for pasture. Most areas remain in native vegetation of pond cypress, red maple, sweetgum, wax myrtle, pickerelweed, and maidencane.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Central and southern Peninsular Florida. This series is of small known extent.
