GILCO SERIES

The Gilco series consists of very deep, well drained or moderately well drained moderately permeable soils formed in mixed alluvium on flood plains. Slopes are 0 to 4 percent. The mean annual precipitation is about 8 inches, and the mean annual temperature is about 53 degrees F.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Coarse-loamy, mixed, superactive, calcareous, mesic Typic Torrifluvents

TYPICAL PEDON: Gilco loam--cultivated. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted.)

Ap--0 to 4 inches; brown (10YR 5/3) loam, brown (10YR 4/3) moist; weak fine granular structure; slightly hard, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; many fine and very fine roots; strongly effervescent; moderately alkaline; clear smooth boundary. (3 to 10 inches thick)

C1--4 to 34 inches; light yellowish brown (10YR 6/4) stratified silt loam, loam, and fine sandy loam, dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4) moist; massive; slightly hard, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; common fine and very fine roots; strongly effervescent; moderately alkaline; clear smooth boundary. (10 to 40 inches thick)

C2--34 to 68 inches; light yellowish brown (10YR 6/4) stratified loam and fine sandy loam, dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4) moist; massive; hard, firm, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; few fine roots; strongly effervescent; moderately alkaline.

COMPETING SERIES: These are the Cirac (NV), Eghelm (CO), Glenton (WY), Ives (AZ), Juva (NV), Neskahi (UT), Thoroughfare (CO) and Yelives (NM) series. Cirac and Juva soils are strongly to very strongly alkaline and have an SAR of greater than 13 and salts greater than 16 mmhos in some part of the series control section. Eghelm soils have more than 50 percent sand. Glenton soils, typically, have soil temperatures of 47 to 51 degrees F., and are intermittently moist during April, May and June. Ives soils are not stratified in the upper part of the particle-size control section. Neskahi and Thoroughfare soils have 2.5YR or 5YR hue. Yelives soils have yellower (2.5Y) hue.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Gilco soils formed in alluvium on flood plains. Slopes are 0 to 4 percent. Elevations are 4,000 to 6,100 feet. The mean annual precipitation is 6 to 10 inches with the peak from July through October. The mean annual temperature is 50 to 56 degrees F., and the frost-free period is 140 to 180 days.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Aga, Peralta and Trail soils. The Aga soils are coarse-loamy over sandy or sandy-skeletal. Peralta soils are moist in some or all parts of the SMCS from March to October. The Trail soils are in a sandy family.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained or moderately well drained; slow runoff; moderate permeability.

USE AND VEGETATION: Nonirrigated areas are used for livestock grazing, and irrigated areas are used for pasture and cropland. Present vegetation is Indian ricegrass, fourwing saltbush, tamarisk and alkali sacaton.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Northcentral New Mexico, Southeastern Utah. Series is of small extent. MLRA 35.
