TYPICAL PEDON: Gillette Castle loamy sand on a tidal river channel under 174 centimeters of tidal riverine water. Tidal range is 60 centimeters. (Colors are for moist soil unless otherwise stated).

Aseg1--0 to 10 centimeters; very dark gray (2.5Y 3/1) loamy sand; single grain; moderately fluid; nonsaline; 10 percent wood fragments; common very fine roots throughout; slightly acid (pH 6.1); extremely acid (pH 3.9) oxidized pH; abrupt boundary.

Aseg2--10 to 40 centimeters; very dark brown (10YR 2/2) mucky woody loam; massive; moderately fluid; nonsaline; 20 percent wood fragments; 10 percent plant and macroalgal fragments; common fine roots throughout; slightly acid (pH 6.4); neutral (pH 6.9) oxidized pH; clear boundary.

Aseg3--40 to 62 centimeters; very dark brown (10YR 2/2) loamy fine sand; single grain; moderately fluid; nonsaline; 2 percent wood fragments; few fine roots throughout; neutral (pH 6.6); extremely acid (pH 3.8) oxidized pH; clear boundary. (Combined thickness of Aseg horizons is 0 to 62 centimeters.)

Cseg1--62 to 95 centimeters; very dark gray (10YR 3/1) woody sand; single grain; slightly fluid; nonsaline; 25 percent wood fragments; 10 percent fine gravels; slightly acid (pH 6.3); ultra acid (pH 3.3) oxidized pH; clear boundary.

Cseg2--95 to 115 centimeters; very dark grayish brown (2.5Y 3/2) sand; single grain; nonfluid; nonsaline; 2 percent wood fragments; slightly acid (pH 6.5); ultra acid (pH 3.2) oxidized pH; clear boundary.

Cseg3--115 to 135 centimeters; very dark gray (2.5Y 3/1) coarse sand; single grain; nonfluid; nonsaline; 2 percent wood fragments; 2 percent fine gravels; slightly acid (pH 6.3); extremely acid (pH 3.5) oxidized pH; clear boundary.

Cseg4--135 to 200 centimeters; very dark grayish brown (2.5Y 3/2) coarse sand; single grain; nonfluid; nonsaline; 10 percent wood fragments; 1 percent fine gravels; neutral (pH 6.7); extremely acid (pH 3.7) oxidized pH.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Gales Ferry, Naugatuck, Nott Island, Pishagqua, and Thames soils.
Gales Ferry soils--are on tidal creeks and tidal river channels with silt loam or finer textures and have hypersulfidic soil materials
Naugatuck soils--are sandy soils throughout and found on river channels, shoals, and point bars
Nott Island soils--are sandy soils throughout; found on river channels, shoals, and sand bars; have hypersulfidic soil materials; and have electrical conductivity (1:5 soil-water) of greater than 0.6 dS/m in at least one horizon within 100 centimeters from the mineral soil surface.
Pishagqua soils--are on lagoon bottom and mainland cove landforms and have very fine sandy loam textures or finer throughout
Thames soils--are on tidal river channels and shoals with coarse-loamy textures and contain hypersulfidic soil materials

USE AND VEGETATION:
Major uses--The area is used for recreational fishing and swimming. Commercial uses include shell fishing and aquaculture.
Native vegetation--White Water-Lily (Nymphaea odorata), Claspingleaf Pondweed (Potamogeton perfoliatus), Horned Pondweed (Zannichellia palustris). Vegetation cover ranges from 0 through 80 percent on the flat and sloping units of this soil.

REMARKS: This subaqueous series is mapped in areas previously mapped as water in the state of Connecticut.

Diagnostic horizons and features in this pedon include-
Peraquic feature--The zone from 0 to 200 centimeters has positive soil water potential (permanently submerged) at the soil surface (under 1.74 meters of freshwater).
Particle--size control section--The zone from 0 to 100 centimeters (0 to 40 inches) is loamy over sandy or sandy-skeletal.
Frasiwassents- taxonomic great group--electrical conductivity (EC1:5) is less than 0.6 dS/m throughout.
Ochric epipedon--0 to 62 centimeters (Aseg1, Aseg2, and Aseg3 horizons).
Sulfidic soil materials--within 100 centimeters of the mineral soil surface, 0 to 10 centimeters and 40 to 200 centimeters (Aseg1, Aseg3 and Cseg horizons).
