TAXONOMIC CLASS: Coarse-loamy, siliceous, superactive, mesic Dystric Fluventic Eutrudepts
TYPICAL PEDON: Gladden loam - on a convex slope of 2 percent slope at an elevation of 930 feet. (Colors are for moist soil unless otherwise stated.)
Ap--0 to 9 inches; dark brown (10YR 3/3) loam, pale brown (10YR 6/3) dry; weak very fine granular structure; very friable; many very fine and fine roots; strongly acid; clear smooth boundary. (3 to 10 inches thick)
Bw1--9 to 23 inches; brown (10YR 4/3) and dark brown (10YR 3/3) loam; weak very fine granular structure; very friable; common very fine and few fine roots; slightly acid; clear smooth boundary.
Bw2--23 to 36 inches; brown (10YR 4/3) fine sandy loam; weak very fine granular structure; very friable; common very fine and few fine roots; 5 percent chert gravel; slightly acid; clear wavy boundary. (Combined thickness of the Bw horizon is 4 to 50 inches.)
C1--36 to 42 inches; dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4) gravelly fine sandy loam; massive; very friable; few very fine roots; 25 percent chert gravel; few fine iron-manganese stains; slightly acid; clear wavy boundary. (0 to 20 inches thick)
2C2--42 to 60 inches; dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4) extremely gravelly sandy loam; massive; very friable; 60 percent chert gravel and 10 percent chert cobbles; common iron-manganese stains; neutral.
TYPE LOCATION: Gasconade County, Missouri; about 4 1/2 miles southeast of Swiss; 850 feet north and 1,550 feet east of the southwest corner, section 31, T. 44 N., R. 4 W; USGS Latham, Missouri quadrangle, latitude 38 degrees 30 minutes 43.4 seconds N. and longitude 91 degrees 25 minutes 6.2 seconds W.; UTM zone 15, 637,894 m. Easting and 4,263,817 m. Northing, NAD 83.
RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: The thickness of the solum ranges from 30 to 60 inches. Chert gravel in the A horizon and B horizon ranges from 0 to 35 percent and in the C horizon from 25 to 90 percent. Reaction ranges from very strongly acid to neutral. The mean annual soil temperature at 20 inches is 55 to 59 degrees F.
The A horizon has hue of 10YR, value of 3 to 5 and chroma of 2 or 3 moist, and value of 6 and chroma of 2 or 3 dry. It is loam, silt loam, fine sandy loam, sandy loam, or their gravelly analogues.
The Bw horizon has hue of 10YR or 7.5YR, value of 3 to 6, and chroma of 3 to 6. It is loam, silt loam, sandy loam, fine sandy loam, or their gravelly analogues.
The C horizon has hue of 10YR or 7.5YR, value of 4 to 6, and chroma of 3 to 8. It is the gravelly to extremely gravelly analogues of loam, silt loam, fine sandy loam or sandy loam. Some pedons are the gravelly, very gravelly or extremely gravelly analogues of loamy sand or sand when the Bw horizon has greater than 50 percent fine or coarser sand.
The 2C horizon has hue of 7.5YR to 10YR, value of 3 to 8, and chroma of 2 to 4. Texture is silt loam to extremely gravelly sand.
COMPETING SERIES: There are no other series in this family. Similar series in different families are the Elsah, Grigsby, Jamesfin, Midco, Pope, Sensabaugh, and Skidmore series. The Elsah, Midco, and Skidmore soils are loamy-skeletal. Pope and Grigsby soils have mixed mineralogy. Jamesfin soils are fine-silty. Sensabaugh soils are fine-loamy and have mixed mineralogy.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Gladden soils are on flood plains along tributary streams in narrow valleys. The slopes range from 0 to 3 percent. The soils formed in loamy alluvium. The mean annual temperature ranges from 54 to 58 degrees F, and mean annual precipitation ranges from 38 to 48 inches.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the similar Elsah, Midco, Jamesfin, and Pope soils and the Ashton, Haymond and Kaintuck soils. Elsah and Midco soils are loamy-skeletal and are on similar landscapes. Jamesfin and Pope soils have mixed mineralogy and Haymond soils are coarse-silty. These soils are on flood plains of somewhat larger streams. Ashton soils are fine-silty and are on stream terraces and alluvial fans. Kaintuck soils are stratified and are on lower positions of the landscape.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained. Surface runoff is negligible to very low. Permeability is moderate in the upper part and moderately rapid to very rapid in the lower part. The saturated hydraulic conductivity is very high. Gladden soils are subject to occasional or frequent flooding for very brief durations.
USE AND VEGETATION: These soils are cropped to corn, small grains, grain sorghum, and hay and pasture. Native vegetation was mixed hardwoods and shortleaf pine.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: The Ozark Highland (MLRA 116A) region of southern Missouri. Gladden soils are of moderate extent.
MLRA SOIL SURVEY REGIONAL OFFICE (MO) RESPONSIBLE: Morgantown, West Virginia
SERIES ESTABLISHED: Dent County, Missouri, 1966.
REMARKS: Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in this series are:
ochric epipedon - the zone from the surface of the soil to a depth of 9 inches (Ap horizon).
cambic horizon - the zone from approximately 9 to 36 inches (Bw1 and Bw2 horizons).
The classification of this series has been changed from Coarse-loamy, siliceous, mesic Fluventic Dystrochrepts to Coarse-loamy, siliceous, superactive, mesic Dystic Fluventic Eutrudepts.
