TYPICAL PEDON: Goosecastle mucky peat in an oligohaline marsh at about sea level (colors are for moist soil unless otherwise stated; electrical conductivity is 1:1 by volume solution mixture unless otherwise stated).
Oese--0 to 75 centimeters; black (N 2.5/) broken face and black (N 2.5/) rubbed mucky peat; 50 percent fibers, 25 percent rubbed; von Post H5; common medium and few coarse roots; moderate sulfurous odor; no color change with 3 percent hydrogen peroxide; no effervescence with 30 percent hydrogen peroxide; nonsaline (1.3 dS/m); slightly acid (pH 6.1), strongly acid (pH 5.4) oxidized pH; clear boundary.
Oase--75 to 108 centimeters; very dark brown (10YR 2/2) broken face and very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) muck; 15 percent fibers, 5 percent rubbed; von Post H9; slight sulfurous odor; no color change with 3 percent hydrogen peroxide; no effervescence with 30 percent hydrogen peroxide; nonsaline (1.3 dS/m); slightly acid (pH 6.4), strongly acid (pH 5.5) oxidized pH; gradual boundary (combined thickness of the O horizons is 40 to 129 centimeters).
ABseg--108 to 139 centimeters; black (2.5Y 2.5/1) clay loam; massive; slightly sticky, slightly plastic; moderately fluid; 10 percent herbaceous plant fibers; no sulfurous odor; no color change with 3 percent hydrogen peroxide; no effervescence with 30 percent hydrogen peroxide; nonsaline (0.6 dS/m); neutral (pH 6.6), strongly acid (pH 5.4) oxidized pH; clear boundary.

Currituck soils--formed herbaceous organic materials over sandy or sandy-skeletal marine deposits, do not have relict argillic horizons, and contain more sapric material.
Delway soils--formed in herbaceous and woody organic materials over loamy fluviomarine deposits and are in estuaries with salinities between 5 and 30 parts per thousand.

Flooding--Very frequent, for very brief durations. The soils are flooded by wind tides. Goosecastle soils are not normally subject to inundation from lunar tides.
USE AND VEGETATION:
Major uses--Goosecastle soils are used mainly as wetland wildlife habitat.
Typical vegetation--Dominantly needlegrass (Juncus roemerianus), Olney's three square (Schoenoplectus americanus), big cordgrass (Spartina cynosuroides), and narrowleaf cattail (Typha angustifolia). Areas transitional to higher elevations have scattered eastern baccharis (Baccharis halimifolia), waxmyrtle (Myrica cerifera), and black willow (Salix nigra) shrubs. In some areas, much of the native vegetation has been overtaken by invasive common reed (Phragmites australis).

REMARKS:
The series is named after a small island at the mouth of Coinjock Bay. Goosecastle soils were previously mapped as the Backbay and Currituck soil series in Virginia and North Carolina, respectively.
Diagnostic horizons and other diagnostic soil characteristics recognized in this pedon are (Keys to Soil Taxonomy, Thirteenth Edition, 2022):
Hemic soil materials--The zone from 0 to 75 centimeters has a fiber content after rubbing that is between one-sixth and two-fifths of the original soil volume.
Sapric soil materials--The zone from 75 to 108 centimeters has a fiber content after rubbing that less than one-sixth of the original soil volume.
Fluidity--The zone from 108 to 200 centimeters has a fluidity class of slightly fluid to moderately fluid.
Hyposulfidic materials--The zone from 108 to 200 centimeters has an initial pH that decreases by 1 or more units but remains at a value of 4.0 or more after 16 weeks of moist aerobic incubation.
Argillic horizon--The zone from 139 to 200. This is a relict feature that developed prior to marsh formation.
Peraquic feature--Zero or positive water potential at or near the soil surface.
