GUTHRIE SERIES

The Guthrie series consists of very deep, poorly drained soils with a fragipan in the lower subsoil. The soil formed in silty material on upland flats and depressions. Slopes range from 0 to 2 percent.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine-silty, siliceous, semiactive, thermic Typic Fragiaquults

TYPICAL PEDON: Guthrie silt loam - forested. (Colors are for moist soil unless otherwise stated.)

A--0 to 1 inch; dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) silt loam; moderate medium and fine granular structure; very friable; many fine and medium roots; strongly acid; abrupt smooth boundary. (0 to 2 inches thick)

Eg--1 to 8 inches; grayish brown (10YR 5/2) silt loamweak medium granular structure; friable; many fine and medium roots; common medium distinct yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) masses of iron accumulation; very strongly acid; gradual smooth boundary. (6 to 12 inches thick)

Bg1--8 to 13 inches; gray (10YR 6/1) silt loamweak medium subangular blocky structure; friable; common fine and medium roots; few fine and medium pores; common fine and medium distinct light yellowish brown (10YR 6/4) masses of iron accumulation; very strongly acid; gradual smooth boundary.

Bg2--13 to 32 inches; gray (10YR 6/1) silt loam; weak medium subangular blocky structure; friable; few fine and medium roots; few fine and medium pores; common fine and medium yellowish brown (10YR 5/6) masses of iron accumulation; very strongly acid; gradual irregular boundary. (Thickness of the Bg horizon ranges from 10 to 33 inches)

Btx1--32 to 41 inches; gray (10YR 6/1) silt loam; weak very coarse prismatic structure parting to moderate medium subangular blocky; firm; few fine roots between prisms; few fine and medium pores; few faint clay films on faces of prisms and in pores; common fine and medium prominent yellowish brown (10YR 5/6) masses of iron accumulation; brittle in 60 percent of the mass; few angular fragments of chert about 1/2 inch in diameter; very strongly acid; gradual irregular boundary.

Btx2--41 to 53 inches; gray (10YR 6/1) silt loam; weak very coarse prismatic structure parting to moderate medium subangular blocky; very firm; few fine pores; common distinct gray (10YR 6/1) clay films on faces of prisms and in pores; few fine and medium light gray (10YR 7/1) continuous silt coatings on faces of prisms and as vertical seams; few fragments of chert about 1/2 inch in diameter; brittle in more than 60 percent of the mass; very strongly acid; gradual irregular boundary.

Btx3--53 to 68 inches; gray (N 6/0) silty clay loam; weak very coarse prismatic structure parting to moderate medium subangular blocky; very firm; few fine and medium pores; common distinct gray (10YR 6/1) clay films on faces of peds and in pores; common medium and coarse light gray (10YR 7/1) silt coatings on faces of prisms and as vertical seams; few fine angular fragments of chert; brittle in more than 60 percent of the mass; very strongly acid. (Thickness of the Btx horizon ranges from 25 to 50 inches)

TYPE LOCATION: Coffee County, Tennessee; 9.5 miles north of Manchester on State Highway 53; 0.7 mile south of Davis Grocery Store and 100 feet east of Highway 53. USGS Quad: (unknown); latitude: (unknown), longitude: (unknown)

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: Depth to bedrock is greater than 60 inches. Reaction ranges from extremely acid to strongly acid, except where lime has been added. Rock fragments range from 0 to 3 percent above the fragipan and from 0 to 15 percent in the fragipan.

The A horizon has hue of 10YR, value of 3 or 4, and chroma of 2 or 3. The Ap horizon has hue of 10YR to 2.5Y, value of 4 to 6, and chroma of 2 or 3. Pedons with value of 3 or less and chroma of 3 or 2 are less than 7 inches thick. Texture is silt loam.

The Eg horizon has hue of 10YR or 2.5Y, value of 5 or 6, and chroma of 1 or 2. Texture is silt loam.

The Bg horizon is neutral or has hue of 10YR to 5Y, value of 5 to 7, and chroma of 2 or less. Many pedons have few to many redoximorphic features in shades of red, brown, and yellow. Texture is silt loam or silty clay loam.

The Btx horizon has hue of 10YR or 2.5Y, value of 5 to 7, and chroma of 2 or less. The horizon has few to many redoximorphic features in shades of yellow, brown, and red. In some pedons, the Btx horizon is an evenly mottled pattern of gray, yellow, red, and brown and does not have a dominant color. Texture is silt loam or silty clay loam.

COMPETING SERIES: Guthrie is the only series in this family. Series in closely associated families are the Almaville, Almo, Henry, Mullins, Robertsville, and Taft series. Almaville, Almo, and Henry soils have more than 35 percent base saturation. Mullins soils have mixed mineralogy and are mesic. Robertsville soils have more than 35 percent base saturation and are mesic. Taft soils have dominant chroma of 3 or more in a horizon above the fragipan.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Guthrie soils are on level upland flats and in depressions. Slopes range from 0 to 2 percent. The soil formed in a silty material possibly loess or ancient alluvium. Near the type location, the average annual temperature is 59 degrees F. and average annual precipitation is about 50 inches.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Taft Dickson, Mountview, and Sango series. Taft, Dickson, and Sango soils are better drained and have dominant chroma of 3 or more in one or more horizons above the fragipan. Mountview soils do not have a fragipan and have chroma of 4 or more throughout the B horizon.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Poorly drained; negligible to very slow runoff; moderate permeability above the fragipan and slow to very slow permeability in the fragipan. Some areas are ponded for several weeks during the winter and spring.

USE AND VEGETATION: Cleared areas are used for pasture. In a few areas soybeans are grown. Areas in forest consist chiefly of bottom land oaks, sweetgum, sycamore, and maple.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Highland Rim in Tennessee, the Pennyroyal of Kentucky, northern Alabama, Arkansas, Maryland. The series is of large extent.
