HAGERMAN SERIES

The Hagerman series consists of moderately deep, well drained, moderately permeable soils that formed in alluvium and eolian material derived from sandstone and shale on hills, piedmont fans, mesas and ridgetops. Slope ranges from 0 to 20 percent. Mean annual precipitation is about 12 inches and mean annual air temperature is about 50 degrees F.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine-loamy, mixed, superactive, mesic Ustic Haplargids

TYPICAL PEDON: Hagerman fine sandy loam - rangeland. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted.)

A--0 to 3 inches; (7.5YR 5/3) fine sandy loam, dark brown (7.5YR 4/3) moist; weak thin platy and fine granular structure; slightly hard, very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; common very fine and fine roots; many very fine and fine pores; neutral; clear smooth boundary. (2 to 7 inches thick)

Bt1--3 to 7 inches; reddish brown (5YR 5/3) sandy clay loam, reddish brown (5YR 4/3) moist; weak very coarse prismatic structure that parts to weak medium subangular blocky; hard, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; many very fine and fine roots; many very fine and fine pores; thin clay coatings on sand grains, as bridges between the grains and lining pores; neutral; clear smooth boundary.

Bt2--7 to 22 inches; reddish brown (5YR 5/3) sandy clay loam, reddish brown (5YR 4/3) moist; moderate very coarse prismatic and strong very fine subangular blocky structure; very hard, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; thin clay coatings on sand grains and as bridges between the grains; neutral; gradual wavy boundary. (Combined thickness of Bt horizons is 10 to 33 inches)

Btk--22 to 27 inches; reddish brown (5YR 5/4) sandy clay loam, reddish brown (5YR 4/4) moist; weak very coarse prismatic and weak medium subangular blocky structure; very hard, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; thin patchy clay films on horizontal and vertical faces of peds; with few medium calcium carbonate concretions; slightly effervescent; moderately alkaline; gradual wavy boundary. (3 to 13 inches thick)

Bk--27 to 30 inches; light brown (7.5YR 6/4) sandy clay loam, brown (7.5YR 5/4) moist; massive; very hard, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; about five percent rock fragments; strongly effervescent; carbonates as few thin filaments and as medium concretions; moderately alkaline, abrupt smooth boundary. (0 to 10 inches thick)

2R--30 inches; sandstone with carbonates as a thin crust.

TYPE LOCATION: Torrance County, New Mexico; southeast quarter, southwest quarter, northeast quarter, Sec. 10, T.8N., R.14E; 105 degrees, 26 minutes, 12 seconds west longitude; 34 degrees, 56 minutes, 14 seconds north latitude.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS:

Soil moisture: Intermittently moist in some part of the soil moisture control section December through March and July through September.

Soil temperature: 48 to 56 degrees F.

Depth to free carbonates: 11 to 30 inches.

Depth to bedrock: 20 to 40 inches

Other features: Bk horizons are not present in some pedons.

A horizon - Hue: 5YR to 10YR. Value: 4 to 6 dry, 3 or 4 moist.
Chroma: 2 to 6.
Reaction: Neutral to slightly alkaline.

Bt horizon - Hue: 7.5YR to 2.5YR. Value: 4 to 7 dry or moist.
Chroma: 3 to 6.
Texture: sandy loam, fine sandy loam, loam, sandy clay loam, or clay loam with clay averaging 18 to 35 percent and sand content of more than 40 percent.

Calcium carbonate equivalent: 2 to 15 percent. Some pedons have greater than 15 percent calcium carbonate equivalent, but the average is less than 15 percent in the majority of pedons.

Bk horizon (where present) - Hue: 7.5YR to 2.5YR. Value: 6 to 8 dry, 5 to 8 moist.
Chroma: 3 or 4.
Calcium carbonate equivalent: 3 to 10 percent.

COMPETING SERIES: These are the Balon (AZ), Bowbac (WY), Buckle (NM), Cambria (WY), Cushman (WY), Decolney (T WY), Fattig (MT), Forkwood (WY), Gaddes (AZ), Gapbutte (T AZ), Gapmesa (T CO), Harbord (CO), Maysdorf (WY), Oelop (NM), Palacid (NM), Penistaja (NM), Pokeman (WY), Potts (WY), Pugsley (WY), Quagwa (AZ), Spangler (WY), Spenlo (UT), Sundance (CO), Tekla (T WY), and the Yenlo (CO) soils. The Balon, Buckle, Cambria, Decolney, Harbord, Maysdorf, Oelop, Palacid, Penistaja, Potts, Quagwa, Spenlo, Sundance, Teckla, and Yenlo soils are more than 40 inches to a lithic or paralithic contact. Bowbac, Cushman, Gaddes, Pokeman, Pugsley, and Spangler soils have a paralithic contact at depths at depths between 20 and 40 inches. Fattig soils have hues of 10YR or yellower in the argillic horizon. Gapbutte soils are effervescent to the surface. Gapmesa soils are effervescent to the surface.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Hagerman soils are on hills, piedmonts, fans, ridgetops and mesas. The most common slopes are 0 to 8 percent but some range to 20 percent. Mean annual precipitation ranges from 10 to 13 inches, and mean annual temperature ranges from 46 to 54 degrees F. The average summer temperature is 67 degrees F. Most of the precipitation falls during the period from July through September. Frost-free period is 120 to 170 days and elevation ranges from 5,500 to 7,500 feet

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Bernal, Dean and Skyvillage soils. Bernal and Dean soils have mollic epipedons. Skyvillage soils have bedrock within 20 inches of the surface.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained. Permeability of the soil is moderate over a very slowly permeable bedrock. Runoff is negligible on slopes less than 1 percent, low on 1 to 3 percent slopes, medium on 3 to 5 percent slopes, high on 5 to 8 percent slopes, and very high on slopes greater than 8 percent.

USE AND VEGETATION: Dominant use is for range. Vegetation is blue grama, galleta, sand dropseed, snakeweed, cactus, and some pinyon and juniper.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Central New Mexico, central and western Colorado. The series is extensive.
