JEALOUSY SERIES

The Jealousy series consists of moderately deep, well drained, moderately permeable soils on summits and side slopes of volcanic hills and mountains. They formed in residuum from plutonic bedrock. Near the type location, the mean annual air temperature is about 80 degrees F., and the mean annual precipitation rated is about 40 inches. Slopes range from 12 to 70 percent.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine, smectitic, isohyperthermic Typic Haplustolls

TYPICAL PEDON: Jealousy gravelly clay loam. (Colors for moist conditions.)

A1--0 to 9 inches; very dark brown (10YR 2/2) gravelly clay loam; strong fine and medium granular structure; firm, moderately sticky, moderately plastic; many fine and medium roots, few coarse roots; many medium and coarse interstitial pores; many medium and coarse wormcasts and insectcasts; about 30 percent, by volume, pebbles; neutral; gradual smooth boundary. (2 to 10 inches thick)

A2--9 to 15 inches; very dark brown (10YR 2/2) gravelly clay loam; strong fine and medium granular structure; firm, moderately sticky, moderately plastic; common fine and medium roots; many medium and coarse interstitial pores; many medium and coarse wormcasts and insectcasts; about 20 percent, by volume, pebbles; neutral; gradual smooth boundary. (2 to 8 inches thick)

Bw--15 to 26 inches; dark yellowish brown (10YR 3/4) gravelly clay loam; moderate medium subangular blocky structure; firm, moderately sticky, moderately plastic; common fine and medium roots; few pressure faces on vertical and horizontal ped faces; common medium vesicular and tubular pores; few fine and medium wormcasts; about 20 percent, by volume, pebbles; neutral; gradual wavy boundary. (2 to 20 inches thick)

C--26 to 38 inches; very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) gravelly clay loam; massive; firm; few fine roots; few fine mica flakes; about 20 percent, by volume, pebbles; common fine and medium distinct strong brown (10YR 5/8) masses of iron accumulation; neutral; clear wavy boundary.

Cr--38 to 60 inches; very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) weathered igneous bedrock.

TYPE LOCATION: St. Croix Island, U.S. Virgin Islands. Approximately 0.4 mile northeast from River on VI-69 northeast from River to a 90-degree northwest bend in VI-69, about 0.3 mile northwest on VI-69, and about 800 feet northeast of VI-69 on a side slope. Frederiksted topographic quadrangle; lat. 17 degrees 44 minutes 53 seconds N.; long. 64 degrees 49 minutes 2 seconds W.; PRD 1940.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: Thickness of the solum and depth to a paralithic contact range from 24 to 40 inches. Reaction ranges from moderately acid to neutral in the A horizon, and neutral to slightly alkaline in the Bw and C horizons.

The A horizon has hue of 7.5YR or 10YR, value of 2 or 3, and chroma of 1 to 3. Texture is loam or clay loam in the fine-earth fraction. Content of pebbles ranges from 0 to 30 percent, by volume. Some pedons have a thin AB horizon with the same range of characteristics as the A horizon.

The Bw horizon has hue of 7.5YR or 10YR, value of 3 to 5, and chroma of 3 to 8. Texture is clay loam or clay in the fine-earth fraction. Content of pebbles ranges from 0 to 30 percent, by volume.

The C horizon have hue of 10YR or 2.5Y, value of 3 to 5, chroma of 2 to 4. Texture is loam, sandy clay loam, or clay loam in the fine-earth fraction. Content of pebbles ranges from 0 to 30 percent, by volume.

The Cr horizon is weathered basic igneous bedrock.

COMPETING SERIES: There are no competing series in the same family.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Jealousy soils are on summits and side slopes of volcanic hills and mountains. They formed in basic plutonic residuum, such as gabbro. The climate is tropical semiarid. Slopes range from 12 to 70 percent. The average annual air temperature ranges from 76 to 82 degrees F., and the mean annual precipitation is about 40 inches.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These include the Annaberg, Cramer, Parasol, Southgate, and Victory soils. Annaberg, Cramer, Southgate, and Victory soils are on similar positions as Jealously soils. In addition, Annaberg and Southgate soils have loamy-skeletal particle-size control sections and are shallow to bedrock. Cramer soils have mixed mineralogy and are shallow to bedrock. Victory soils have loamy-skeletal particle-size control sections and do not have a Mollic epipedon. Parasol soils are on lower positions and are very deep.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; moderate permeability.

USE AND VEGETATION: Most areas are used for pasture and rangeland. Some areas are being converted to urban use.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: St. Croix Island, U.S. Virgin Islands. They are not extensive.
