TYPE LOCATION: St. Croix Island, U.S. Virgin Islands. Near Annaly, from the intersection of VI-63 and VI-78, west about 0.1 mile on VI-78, about 500 feet north of VI-78 in a pasture. Frederiksted topographic quadrangle; lat. 17 degrees 45 minutes 17 seconds N.; long. 64 degrees 51 minutes 14 seconds W.; PRD 1940.
RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: Thickness of the solum and depth to weathered igneous bedrock ranges from 20 to 40 inches. Depth to unweathered igneous bedrock ranges from 40 to 60 inches or more. Reaction ranges from slightly acid to neutral throughout the profile.
The A horizon has hue of 7.5YR or 10YR, value of 3 or 4, and chroma of 2 to 4. Texture is loam or clay loam in the fine-earth fraction. Content of pebbles, cobbles, and stones ranges from 0 to 35 percent, by volume.
The AB horizon, where present, has hue of 7.5YR or 10YR, value of 4 to 7, and chroma of 4 to 6. Texture is loam, sandy clay loam, or clay loam in the fine-earth fraction. Content of pebbles and cobbles ranges from 10 to 35 percent, by volume.
The Bw horizon has hue of 5YR to 10YR, value of 4 to 6, and chroma of 4 to 8. Redoximorphic features in shades of brown range from none to common. Texture is loam or clay loam in the fine-earth fraction. Content of pebbles and cobbles ranges from 35 to 50 percent, by volume.
The C horizon has hue of 5YR to 10YR, value of 3 to 7, and chroma of 4 to 8. Redoximorphic features in shades of brown range from none to common. Texture is loam or clay loam in the fine-earth fraction. Content of pebbles and cobbles ranges from 35 to 60 percent or more, by volume.
The Cr horizon is weathered igneous bedrock.
The R horizon is unweathered igneous bedrock.
COMPETING SERIES: There are no competing series in this family.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: These soils are on side slopes and summits of volcanic uplands. They formed in fine-textured residuum from weathered extrusive volcanic rock. The climate is tropical semiarid. Slopes range from 2 to 70 percent. The average annual air temperature ranges from 76 to 82 degrees F., and the mean annual precipitation is about 40 inches.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These include the Annaberg, Cramer, Dorothea, Fredriksdal, Jealousy, Maho Bay, Parasol, Southgate, and Susannaberg soils. Annaberg, Cramer, Dorothea, Fredriksdal, Jealousy, Maho, Bay, Southgate, and Susannaberg soils are on similar positions. In addition, Annaberg, Cramer, and Maho Bay soils have mollic epipedons and are shallow to bedrock. Jealousy soils have a mollic epipedon. Dorothea, Fredriksdal, and Susannaberg soils have more than 35 percent clay in the particle-size control section and vermiculitic mineralogy. Southgate soils are shallow to bedrock. Parasol soils are on lower positions, have a mollic epipedon, and have more than 35 percent smectitic clay in the particle-size control section.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; moderate permeability.
USE AND VEGETATION: Most areas used for pasture. A few small areas are used for residential developments. Vegetation consists of native and introduced grasses.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: U.S. Virgin Islands. The series is moderately extensive.
