JELLYCAMP SERIES

The Jellycamp series consists of shallow to hardpan, moderately well drained soils formed in alluvium from extrusive igneous rock. Jellycamp soils are on lava plateaus. Slopes are 2 to 15 percent. The mean annual precipitation is about 16 inches and the mean annual temperature is about 45 degrees F.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Clayey, smectitic, mesic, shallow Abruptic Argiduridic Durixerolls

TYPICAL PEDON: Jellycamp very cobbly loam-on a east-facing 2 percent slope under a cover of low sagebrush, annual grasses and scattered western juniper at an elevation of 4,040 feet. (Colors are for dry soil unless, otherwise stated. When described May 3,1979, the soil was moist throughout).

A1--0 to 3 inches; brown (10YR 5/3) very cobbly loam, dark brown (10YR 3/3) moist; weak thin platy structure; slightly hard, very friable, slightly sticky and nonplastic; many very fine roots; common very fine tubular pores; 5 percent gravel, 40 percent cobbles; neutral (pH 7.0); abrupt smooth boundary. (2 to 5 inches thick).

A2--3 to 6 inches; brown (10YR 4/3) very cobbly loam, dark brown (10YR 3/3) moist; weak fine angular blocky structure; hard, friable, sticky and slightly plastic; common fine and many medium roots; common very fine tubular pores; 30 percent cobbles and 5 percent gravel; neutral (pH 7.0); abrupt smooth boundary. (2 to 6 inches thick).

Bt--6 to 11 inches; brown (10YR 4/3) clay, dark brown (10YR 3/3) moist; strong medium prismatic structure parting to moderate medium subangular blocky; very hard, firm, very sticky and very plastic; few very fine roots; few very fine tubular pores; many moderately thick clay films on peds and in pores; 10 percent fine manganese concretions; neutral (pH 7.0); abrupt smooth boundary. (5 to 15 inches thick).

Bqm--11 to 16 inches; brown (10YR 5/3) strongly cemented duripan; laminar to very coarse platy structure; continuous indurated silica capping with common manganese stains; roots are matted on top of the silica capping; neutral (pH 7.0); abrupt smooth boundary. (5 to 25 inches thick).

2R--16 to 40 inches; hard tuff; abrupt smooth boundary.

3R--40 inches; hard vesicular basalt with few fractures.

TYPE LOCATION: Lassen County, California; about 5 miles southeast of McArthur; 3.3 miles southeast of the intersection of Pittville Rd. and the BLM Cindercone Rd.; 1,850 feet south and 300 feet east of the northwest corner of sec. 31, T. 36 N., R. 6 E., Jellico NE (Cable Mtn.) quadrangle (7.5 minute series)

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: Depth to duripan is 10 to 20 inches. Depth to lithic contact is 15 to 35 inches. The mean annual soil temperature is 47 to 52 degrees F. The soil temperature exceeds 41 degrees F. from early March to early December (235 days) and exceeds 47 degrees F. from early May to early November. The soil moisture control section is dry in all parts from early June to mid November (ranges 140 to 160) and is moist in some or all parts the rest of the year. Rock fragments, on the soil surface, range from 0 to 90 percent. The mollic epipedon is 8 to 14 inches thick and includes the upper part of the Bt horizon or all the Bt in soils less than 14 inches thick.

The A horizon color is 10YR 4/2, 4/3, 5/2, 5/3, or 7.5YR 4/2, 4/4, 5/2, 5/4. Moist color is 10YR 3/1, 3/2, 3/3, or 7.5YR 3/2, or 5YR 3/2, 3/3. Organic matter ranges from 1 to 2 percent. Texture is loam, sandy loam, very cobbly loam, extremely stony loam, extremely gravelly sandy loam, or very gravelly loam. Clay content ranges from 10 to 27 percent. Reaction is neutral or mildly alkaline. Base saturation by ammonium acetate ranges from 85 to 100 percent.

The Bt horizon color is 10YR 4/3, 5/3, 5/4, or 7.5YR 5/2, 5/4, 5/6, or 5YR 4/2, 4/4. Moist color is 10YR 3/2, 3/3, 3/4, or 7.5YR 3/2, 4/2, 4/4, or 5YR 3/2, 3/3, 3/4. Reaction is neutral or mildly alkaline. Base saturation by ammonium acetate ranges from 95 to 100 percent. It has 40 to 60 percent clay and 0 to 10 percent rock fragments.

The Bqm horizon is indurated or strongly cemented with an indurated cap. The silica cemented capping is continuous and ranges in thickness from 1/4 to 1 inch.

COMPETING SERIES: This is the Lunder (NV) series. Lunder soils have hard bedrock greater than 60 inches below the surface, have more than 15 percent rock fragments in the Bt horizon, and have effervescent duripans.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Jellycamp soils are on lava plateaus. Slopes are 2 to 15 percent. These soils formed in alluvium weathered from extrusive igneous rock. Elevation is 3,400 to 5,800 feet. The climate is semiarid with warm, dry summers and cold, moist winters. Mean annual precipitation is 12 to 18 inches. Snowfall is 12 to 36 inches. The mean annual temperatures is 45 to 50 degrees F. The mean January temperature is about 27 degrees F. The mean July temperature is about 67 degrees F. Frost free season is 50 to 110 days.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Lassen, Longcreek, Vansickle, and Ollierivas soils. Lassen soils are 20 to 40 inches deep to bedrock and are on lava plateaus. Longcreek soils have a clayey-skeletal control section and are on lava plateaus and escarpments. Vansickle soils have a clayey-skeletal control section and are on lava plateaus. Ollierivas soils are 20 to 40 inches deep, have a fine-loamy control section and are on mounds on lava plateaus.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Moderately well drained; slow to medium runoff; very slow permeability.

USE AND VEGETATION: This soil is used for livestock grazing. The natural vegetation is low sagebrush, antelope bitterbrush, bluebunch wheatgrass, and one-spike oatgrass.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Northeastern California. The soils are moderately extensive. MLRA is 21.

MLRA SOIL SURVEY REGIONAL OFFICE (MO) RESPONSIBLE: Davis, California

SERIES PROPOSED: Lassen County, Intermountain Soil Survey Area, California 1989. Source of name is from Jelly Camp on the Jellico Quadrangle.

REMARKS: Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in this pedon are:

Mollic epipedon- 0 to 11 inches (A1,A2, Bt).

2. Clay content in the control section is always over 35 percent.

Duripan - 11 to 16 inches (Bqm).

Argillic horizon - 6 to 11 inches (Bt)

Lithic contact - 16 inches (2R)

ADDITIONAL DATA: Reference samples were run by the Susanville District-BLM on the A1 and Bt horizons for clay mineralogy. The A1 horizon has a medium amount of montmorillonitic and kaolinitic clays and a small amount of vermiculite. The Bt horizon is dominantly montmorillonitic with a small amount of kaolinitic clays.
