KANEBREAK SERIES

The Kanebreak series consists of deep, somewhat poorly drained, slowly permeable soils on flood plains. These nearly level soils formed from loamy alluvium. Slopes range from 0 to 1 percent.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine-loamy, mixed, superactive, thermic Cumulic Epiaquolls

TYPICAL PEDON: Kanebreak fine sandy loam - pasture.
(Colors are for moist soil unless otherwise stated.)

Ag1--0 to 8 inches, very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) fine sandy loam; weak fine subangular blocky structure; hard, friable; many fine roots; common fine pores; few fine distinct brown masses of iron accumulation; medium acid; clear smooth boundary. (6 to 12 inches thick)

Ag2--8 to 14 inches, very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) fine sandy loam; moderate fine subangular blocky structure; hard, friable; many fine roots; common fine pores; few fine black concretions; few fine distinct brown masses of iron accumulation; slightly acid; clear wavy boundary. (5 to 14 inches thick)

Ag3--14 to 20 inches, very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) sandy clay loam; moderate medium subangular blocky structure; very hard, firm; common fine roots; few fine pores; few krotovinas; few medium prominent dark reddish brown (5YR 3/4) masses of iron accumulation; neutral; clear smooth boundary. (5 to 15 inches thick)

Ag4--20 to 28 inches, very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) sandy clay loam; moderate fine subangular blocky structure; very hard, firm; few fine roots; few fine pores; few krotovinas; few thin strata of very pale brown fine sandy loam; few peds have very dark gray coatings; many peds are coated with brown fine sandy loam; few fine distinct brown masses of iron accumulation; mildly alkaline; clear smooth boundary. (6 to 20 inches thick)

Cg1--28 to 41 inches, grayish brown (10YR 5/2) fine sandy loam; massive; hard, friable; few fine roots; few fine pores; few krotovinas; few fine black manganese concretions; few thin strata of sandy clay loam; moderately alkaline; clear smooth boundary. (10 to 20 inches thick)

Cg2--41 to 70 inches, light brownish gray (10YR 6/2) very fine sandy loam; massive; few fine roots; few fine pores; few fine black manganese concretions; few thin clay and clay loam strata in the lower part; moderately alkaline.

TYPE LOCATION: Walker County, Texas; from the intersection of Texas Highway 19 and Farm Road 247 in Huntsville, Texas; 10.5 miles north on Farm Road 247; then east on county road 0.15 mile to gate; then east on private road 4.4 miles; then south on private road 2.3 miles and 75 feet west of road in pasture.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: The Ag1 and Ag2 horizons have hue of 7.5YR or 10YR, value of 2 or 3, and chroma of 1 or 2. The Ag2 horizon has iron accumulations in shades of brown, dark brown, yellowish brown, or dark yellowish brown. Recent overwash 6 to 12 inches thick that is dark grayish brown to light gray is common. Texture in the Ag1 horizon is fine sandy loam or loam and texture in the Ag2 horizon is fine sandy loam, loam, sandy clay loam, or clay loam. Reaction ranges from moderately acid to neutral.

The Ag3 and Ag4 horizons have hue of 10YR, value of 2 to 4, and chroma of 1 or 2. Iron accumulations in shades of brown or dark reddish brown range from few to common. Texture in the Ag3 horizon is sandy clay or clay loam and texture in the Ag4 horizon is sandy clay loam, clay loam, loam, or fine sandy loam. Reaction ranges from slightly acid to mildly alkaline.

The Cg horizon has hue of 10YR or 2.5Y, value of 2 to 7, and chroma of 1 or 2. Texture is fine sandy loam, sandy clay loam, clay loam, very fine sandy loam, or loam. Reaction ranges from slightly acid to moderately alkaline.

COMPETING SERIES: There are no other series in the same family. The Kosse series is in a closely related family. Kossee soils have a mollic epipedon that is less than 24 inches thick.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Kanebreak soils are on nearly level flood plains. Slopes are mainly 0 to 1 percent. The soil formed in loamy alluvium derived primarily from sediments of Blackland Prairie. Near the type location, the mean annual temperature ranges from 66 to 70 degrees F.; average annual precipitation ranges from 40 to 48 inches, and Thornthwaite P-E index is 72.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Gowker, Kaman, Kaufman, and Trinity series. Gowker soils are moderately well drained and do not have aquic conditions within a depth of 20 inches. Kaman, Kaufman, and Trinity soils contain more than 35 percent clay in the 10- to 40-inch control section and have smectitic mineralogy.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Somewhat poorly drained; medium rate of runoff; slow permeability.

USE AND VEGETATION: Mostly used for woodland and pasture. Native vegetation includes an overstory of water oak, red oak, sweetgum, elm, post oak, and loblolly pine, with an understory of low panicums, rustyseed paspalum, sedges, Virginia wildrye, and switch cane.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Southeast Texas. Series is of moderate extent.
