KODAK SERIES

The Kodak soils are very deep, moderately welldrained soils that formed in alluvium derived from mixed rocks. These soils are on lake plains and stream terraces. Slopes are 0 to 2 percent. The mean annual precipitation is about 150 mm and the mean annual temperature is about 11 degrees C.

A1--0 to 10 cm; gray (10YR 5/1) fine sandy loam, very dark gray (10YR 3/1) moist; weak very thick platy; slightly hard, very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; many coarse roots; many white mollusk shell fragments;; violenty effeversecent; very strongly alkaline(pH 9.2); abrupt smooth boundary. (8 to 25 cm thick)

A2--10 to 23 cm; gray (10YR 5/1), loamy fine sand, very dark gray (10YR 3/1) moist;; massive; soft, very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; many coarse roots; 10 to 15 percent white mollusk shell fragments; violenty effeversecent; strongly alkaline(pH 8.8); abrupt smooth boundary. (10 to 25 cm thick)

A3--23 to 69 cm; gray (10YR 5/1) fine sandy loam, very dark gray (10YR 3/1) moist;fine sandy loam; massive; soft, very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; many coarse roots; 10 to 15 percent white mollusk shell fragments; violenty effeversecent; strongly alkaline(pH 8.8); abrupt smooth boundary. 25 to 50 cm thick)

C--69 to 79 cm; gray (10YR 5/1) very fine sandy loam, dark gray (10YR 4/1) moist; massive; slightly hard, very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; many fine fibrous roots; few white mollusk shell fragments; violenty effeversecent; strongly alkaline(pH 8.8) abrupt smooth boundary. (8 to 25 cm thick)

Ab--79 to 152 cm; gray (N 6/0) silt loam, dark gray (N 4/0) moist; weak fine subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, friable, slightly sticky and nonplastic; many very fine roots; very high in organic matter; few very fine tubular pores; violenty effeversecent; few white mollusk shell fragments; strongly alkaline(pH 8.6).

TYPE LOCATION: Pershing County, Nevada; about 250 feet north and 2,960 feet westof the southeast corner, section 26, T. 25 N., R. 30 E.; USGS Lovelock Indian Caves, NV 7.5 minute topographic quadrangle; latitude 39 degrees 59 minutes 58 seconds N and longitude 118 degrees 34 minutes 55 seconds W; WGS84 Decimal Degrees 39.9994444 latitude, -118.5819444 longitude.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS:
Soil moisture: Usually dry; moist in winter and spring; aridic soil moisture regime.bordering on xeric.
Soil temperature: 12 to 14 degrees C.
Mollic epipedon thickness: 45 to 75 cm.
Structure: Subangular blocky, prismatic or massive.
Other features: Freshwater mollusk shells and shell fragments can occur in any horizon, and range from few to many. Buried thin, dark, organic matter-rich layers are common.
Depths to Ab horizon: 50 to 100 cm.

Reaction: Moderately alkaline through very strongly alkaline.
Salinity (EC): 16 to 32 mmhos/cm.
Sodicity (SAR): 13 to 45.

Calcium carbonate equivalent: 5 to 15 percent.

Ab horizon
Texture: Stratified very fine sandy loam to clay.
Clay content: Averages 15 to 35 percent.
Organic matter: 10 to 20 percent.
Salinity (EC): 4 to 32 mmhos/cm.
Sodicity (SAR): 13 to 30.
Calcium carbonate equivalent: 5 to 15 percent.

COMPETING SERIES: These are the Cleman, Dressler, Kimberly, Ravendog and Sheepskin series.

Cleman and Dressler soils lack carbonates and are neutral or slightly alkaline above 100 cm. Kimberly soils lack carbonates above 25 cm. Ravendog soils are moist for 10 to 20 days cumulative between July to September due to convection storms. Sheepskin soils average 20 to 35 percent rock fragments in the particle-size control section.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Kodak soils are on lake plains and stream terraces. They formed in alluvium derived from mixed rocks. Slopes are 0 to 2 percent. Elevations range from 1,158 to 1,220 meters. The climate is cool-arid with cool, moist winters and hot, dry summers. The mean annual precipitation is 125 to 200 mm, the mean annual temperature is 9 to 12 degrees C., and the frost-free period is 100 to 130 days.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: This is the Lovlock series. Lovelock soils have 35 to 60 percent clay in the particle-size control section.

DRAINAGE AND SATURATED HYDRAULIC CONDUCTIVITY: Moderately well drained; low surface runoff; high saturated hydraulic conductivity. A fluctuating water table may rise to within 100 to 150 cm of the surface.

USE AND VEGETATION: Lovelock soils are used for irrigated cropland, rangeland, and wildlife habitat. The present vegetation is mainly inland saltgrass, alkali sacaton, bassia, and inkweed. Cultivated areas are used for growing small grains and alfalfa.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Western Nevada. These soils are not extensive, about 460 acres are mapped. MLRA 27.

MLRA SOIL SURVEY REGIONAL OFFICE (MO) RESPONSIBLE: Davis, California

SERIES ESTABLISHED: Pershing County, Nevada, Lovelock area, 1963.

REMARKS: Kodak is the name of a local railroad station.
Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in this pedon are:
Mollic epipedon - The zone from the soil surface to 69 cm (A2, A2, and A3 horizons).
