KREYENHAGEN SERIES

The Kreyenhagen series consists of deep, well drained soils formed in material weathered from sandstone. Kreyenhagen soils are on uplifted and folded mountains and have slopes of 50 to 75 percent. The average annual precipitation is 16 inches and the mean annual temperature is 60 degrees F.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine-silty, mixed, active, thermic Typic Haploxeralfs

TYPICAL PEDON: Kreyenhagen loam - on an east-facing convex slope of 53 percent under blue oak and annual grasses at 1,750 feet elevation. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise stated. When described on 5/31/78 the soil was moist below 4 inches.)

A1--0 to 2 inches; pale brown (10YR 6/3) loam, brown (10YR 4/3) moist; strong medium subangular blocky; slightly hard, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; many very fine roots; many very fine interstitial and many fine tubular pores; neutral (pH 6.6); abrupt wavy boundary. (2 to 6 inches thick)

B21t--2 to 8 inches; yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) clay loam, brown (10YR 4/3) moist; moderate medium subangular blocky structure; hard, firm, sticky and plastic; many very fine and common fine roots; many very fine interstitial and many very fine and fine tubular pores; many moderately thick clay films in pores and on peds; neutral (pH 7.0); abrupt wavy boundary. (5 to 9 inches thick)

B22t--8 to 21 inches; yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) clay loam, brown (10YR 4/3) moist; weak medium subangular blocky structure; hard, friable, sticky and plastic; many very fine and fine roots; many very fine interstitial and many very fine and fine tubular pores; many moderately thick clay films in pores and on peds; neutral (pH 7.2); clear wavy boundary. (12 to 16 inches thick)

B23t--21 to 36 inches; yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) clay loam, brown (10YR 4/3) moist; weak coarse subangular blocky structure; hard, friable, sticky and plastic; many fine, common medium and few coarse roots; many very fine interstitial and many very fine and fine tubular pores; many moderately thick clay films in pores and on peds; neutral (pH 7.3); clear wavy boundary. (13 to 17 inches thick)

B24t--36 to 45 inches; yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) clay loam, brown (10YR 4/3) moist; weak coarse subangular blocky structure; very hard, friable, sticky and plastic; many fine and common medium roots; many very fine interstitial and many very fine and fine tubular pores; continuous moderately thick clay films in pores and on peds; slightly alkaline (pH 7.5); clear irregular boundary. (8 to 12 inches thick)

Cr--45 inches; brownish yellow (10YR 6/6) weakly consolidated noncalcareous sandstone that slakes in water.

TYPE LOCATION: Kings County, California; approximately 10 miles northwest of Highway 41 (Zwang Ranch entrance) in Avenal Canyon before Blacks Corral; 70 feet west of the intersection of the jeep road and Little Avenal Creek in the southeast 1/4, southeast 1/4, northeast 1/4 of section 16, T. 23 S., R. 16 E., MDB&M.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: The thickness of the solum and depth to a paralithic contact are 40 to 60 inches. The mean annual soil temperature is 59 degrees to 62 degrees F. The soil between the depths of 5 and 16 inches is usually moist in all parts from January 1 to April 30. It is usually dry in all parts from July 1 to September 1.

The A horizon has dry color of 10YR 5/2, 5/3, 5/4, or 6/3 and moist color of 10YR 4/2 or 4/3. Clay content is 20 to 27 percent. This horizon is neutral or mildly alkaline.

The B2t horizon has dry color of 10YR 5/2, 5/3, 5/4, or 6/3 and moist color of 10YR 4/2 or 4/3. It is clay loam or silty clay loam with clay content averaging 30 to 35 percent and is estimated to be 5 to 9 percent more than the A horizon. Clay films are few to continuous, thin or moderately thick in tubular pores or on peds. The fine-earth fraction has by weight less than 11 percent fine sand or coarser in the control section. This horizon is neutral to moderately alkaline.

COMPETING SERIES: These are the Tehama series in the same family and the Arbuckle, Blasingame, Borden, Bressa, Esparto, Fallbrook, Montpellier, Ramona, Sesame, Snelling, Tivy, Wasioja, and Wyman series. Tehama soils have a medium or strongly acid A horizon and lack a paralithic contact within a depth of 60 inches. Arbuckle, Blasingame, Borden, Bressa, Esparto, Fallbrook, Montpellier, Ramona, Sesame, Snelling, Tivy, Wasioja, and Wyman soils have a fine-loamy particle-size control section.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Kreyenhagen soils are on uplifted and folded mountains. Slopes are 50 to 75 percent. The soils formed in material weathered from weakly cemented noncalcareous sandstone. Elevations are 1,100 to 2,600 feet. The climate is dry subhumid mesothermal with hot, dry summers and cool, moist winters. Average annual precipitation is 12 to 18 inches. Mean January temperature is 45 degrees F., mean July temperature is 78 degrees F., and the mean annual temperature is 60 degrees F. Frost-free season varies from 210 to 240 days.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Gaviota, Henneke, Millsholm, and Wadesprings soils. Gaviota, Henneke, and Millsholm soils have a lithic contact within 20 inches of the surface. Wadesprings soils have a fine-loamy particle-size control section and have serpentinitic mineralogy.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; rapid runoff; moderately slow permeability.

USE AND VEGETATION: Used mainly for rangeland and wildlife land. Natural vegetation is blue oak and annual grasses and forbs consisting mostly of wild oats and soft chess.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Southern Diablo Range. Series is of small extent.
