TAXONOMIC CLASS: Ashy-skeletal, mixed, frigid Lithic Vitrixerands

TYPICAL PEDON: Lamay extremely cobbly ashy sandy loam in an area of rangeland, on a 35-percent, south-facing slope at an elevation of 1100 m (All textures are apparent field textures.)

A--0 to 5 cm; extremely cobbly ashy sandy loam, brown (10YR 5/3) dry, very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) moist; weak fine subangular blocky structure; soft, very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; common fine and medium roots; few fine irregular pores; 30 percent gravel, 30 percent cobbles, and 15 percent stones; slightly acid (pH 6.5), NaF pH 9.5; clear smooth boundary

Bw--5 to 36 cm; extremely cobbly ashy sandy loam, yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) dry, dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4) moist; weak fine subangular blocky structure; soft, very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; common fine and medium roots; common fine and few medium irregular pores; 30 percent gravel, 30 percent cobbles, and 15 percent stones; moderately acid (pH 6.0), NaF pH 9.3; gradual wavy boundary

TYPE LOCATION: Yakama Nation, Yakima County, Washington, about 10.5 km southwest of Signal Peak Ranger Station; about 880 m south and 370 m east of the northwest corner of section 1, T. 8 N., R. 12 E.; latitude 46.207201, longitude -121.255345, datum WGS 84 (coordinates estimated from section, township, and range)

The Lamay series originally was named the Horselost series. Lamay means lost in Yakama. The hair of mountain goats is on the shrubs and low trees adjacent to the type location.
