LAMEDEER SERIES


The Lamedeer series consists of very deep, well drained soils that formed in alluvium or colluvium derived from baked sandstone and shale. These soils are on alluvial fans, stream terraces, sedimentary plains and hills. Slopes are 2 to 70 percent. Mean annual precipitation is about 19 inches, and mean annual air temperature is about 42 degrees F.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Loamy-skeletal, mixed, superactive, frigid Calcic Haplustepts

TYPICAL PEDON: Lamedeer channery loam, in woodland. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted.)

Oi--2 inches to 0; slightly decomposed pine needles and twigs. (1 to 3 inches thick)

A--0 to 8 inches; reddish brown (5YR 4/3) channery loam, dark reddish brown (5YR 3/3) moist; weak fine granular structure; soft, very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; common coarse, medium, and fine roots; 20 percent hard angular pebbles; neutral (pH 6.8); clear wavy boundary. (4 to 10 inches thick)

Bw1--8 to 20 inches; reddish brown (5YR 5/3) channery loam, reddish brown (5YR 4/3) moist; weak fine and very fine subangular blocky structure; soft, very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; common coarse, medium, and fine roots; 20 percent hard angular pebbles; slightly alkaline (pH 7.4); clear wavy boundary.

Bw2--20 to 36 inches; reddish brown (5YR 5/3) very channery loam, reddish brown (5YR 4/4) moist; massive; soft, very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; common coarse and medium roots; 40 percent hard angular pebbles, 15 percent hard angular cobbles; slightly alkaline (pH 7.6); clear wavy boundary. (Combined thickness of Bw horizons is 15 to 40 inches).

Bk--36 to 60 inches; reddish brown (5YR 5/3) extremely channery sandy loam, reddish brown (5YR 4/4) moist; massive; soft, very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; common coarse and medium roots; 45 percent hard angular pebbles, 20 percent hard angular cobbles; common moderately thick lime coats on lower surfaces of coarse fragments; slightly effervescent; slightly alkaline (pH 7.8).

TYPE LOCATION: Rosebud County, Montana; 1,905 feet west and 2,100 feet north of the SE corner of sec. 4, T. 4 S., R. 42 E.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS:

Soil temperature - 44 to 47 degrees F.

Moisture control section - between 4 and 12 inches.

Depth to Bk horizon - 30 to 40 inches.

A horizon - Hue: 5YR or 7.5YR

Value: 4, 5, or 6 dry; 3, 4, or 5 moist

Chroma: 2 or 3

Clay content: 12 to 23 percent

Rock fragments: 15 to 35 percent channers

Reaction: pH 6.1 to 7.8

Bw1 horizons - Hue: 5YR or 7.5YR

Value: 4, 5 or 6 dry; 3 or 4 moist

Chroma: 3 or 4

Clay content: 15 to 25 percent

Rock fragments: 30 to 70 percent--15 to 20 percent flagstones; 15 to 50 percent channers

Reaction: pH 6.6 to 7.8

Bw2 horizon - Hue: 2.5YR, 5YR or 7.5YR

Value: 5 or 6 dry; 4 or 5 moist

Chroma: 3 or 4

Texture: loam or sandy loam

Clay content: 8 to 20 percent

Rock fragments: 50 to 70 percent--5 to 15 percent flagstones; 35 to 45 percent channers

Reaction: pH 7.4 to 7.8

Bk horizon - Hue: 5YR or 7.5YR

Value: 5, 6, or 7 dry; 4 or 5 moist

Chroma: 2, 3, or 4

Texture: loam or sandy loam

Clay content: 8 to 20 percent

Rock fragments: 50 to 70 percent--15 to 25 percent flagstones; 35 to 45 percent channers

Calcium Carbonate equivalent: 5 to 15 percent

Reaction: pH 7.4 to 8.4

COMPETING SERIES:

Kadygulch (MT) - does not have horizon of secondary carbonate accumulation; has hue of 10YR throughout.

Kingspoint (MT) - has horizon of secondary carbonate accumulation above 30 inches; has hue of 10YR throughout.

Mowbray (MT) - has hues of 10YR or yellower throughout; has horizon of secondary carbonate accumulation at 10 to 20 inches.

Redfist (MT) - has lithic contact at 20 to 40 inches.

Repkie (MT) - does not have horizon of secondary carbonate accumulation.

Repp (MT) - has albic horizon; has hues of 10YR or yellower throughout.

Wilde (MT) - has lithic contact at 20 to 40 inches.

Wildgen (MT) - has horizon containing lamellae; does not have horizon of secondary carbonate accumulation.

Wilspring (MT) - has lithic contact at 20 to 40 inches.

Winkler (MT) - has horizon containing lamellae; does not have horizon of secondary carbonate accumulation.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING:

Landform - alluvial fans, stream terraces, sedimentary plains and hills.

Elevation - 2,900 to 4,600 feet.

Slope- 2 to 70 percent.

Parent material - alluvium or colluvium derived from scoria.

Climate - long, cold winters; moist springs, warm summers.

Mean annual precipitation - 14 to 20 inches.

Mean annual air temperature - 38 to 45 degrees F.

Frost-free season - 105 to 135 days.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; moderate permeability.

USE AND VEGETATION: Lamedeer soils are used as woodland and range. Potential native vegetation is mainly ponderosa pine with an understory of common chokecherry, common snowberry, Saskatoon serviceberry, and russett buffaloberry.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Lamedeer soils are moderately extensive in southeastern Montana.

Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in this pedon are: mollic colors - from the soil surface to 8 inches (A horizon); cambic horizon - from 8 to 36 inches (Bw1, Bw2 horizons); horizon of calcium carbonate accumulation - from 36 to 60 inches (Bk horizon); particle-size control section - from 10 to 40 inches (Bw1, Bw2, and upper part of Bk horizon). Lamedeer soils have a frigid temperature regime and an ustic moisture regime.
