(3 to 7 inches thick)
Bk1--8 to 16 inches; light brownish gray (2.5Y 6/2) loam, grayish brown (2.5Y 5/2) moist; weak coarse prismatic structure parting to weak medium subangular blocky structure; hard, very friable; common roots; many fine and medium accumulations of carbonate; violent effervescence; slightly alkaline; gradual smooth boundary.
Bk2--16 to 30 inches; light brownish gray (2.5Y 6/2) loam, grayish brown (2.5Y 5/2) moist; weak medium subangular blocky structure; hard, very friable; few roots; many coarse and medium accumulations of carbonate; violent effervescence; slightly alkaline; gradual smooth boundary. Cr2--40 to 60 inches; light brownish gray (2.5Y 6/2) soft sandstone, grayish brown (2.5Y 5/2) moist; brownish yellow (10YR 6/6) stains on fracture faces of sandstone, strong effervescence; moderately alkaline.
TYPE LOCATION: Dewey County, South Dakota; about 1 mile east and 1 mile north of Eagle Butte; 150 feet south and 1,750 feet west of the northeast corner of sec. 8, T. 12 N., R. 24 E.
RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: The depth to bedrock is typically 26 to 40 inches, but ranges from 20 to 40 inches. Depth to horizons of secondary carbonate accumulation ranges from 6 to 10 inches. The control section is silt loam, loam, or very fine sandy loam averaging between 18 and 27 percent clay and less than 15 percent fine sand and coarser. Typically, the soil contains free carbonates to the surface, but the A horizon is leached in some pedons.
The A horizon has hue of 2.5Y or 10YR, value of 5 or 6 and 3 to 5 moist, and chroma of 2 to 4. It is typically silt loam, but some pedons are loam and very fine sandy loam. It ranges from neutral to moderately alkaline.
The Bw horizon has hue of 5Y, 2.5Y, or 10YR; value of 5 to 7 and 4 or 5 moist; and chroma of 2 or 4. It is loam, silt loam, or very fine sandy loam and is slightly or moderately alkaline.
The Bk horizon has hue of 5Y, 2.5Y, or 10YR; value of 5 to 7 and 4 to 6 moist; and chroma of 2 to 4. It is loam, silt loam, or very fine sandy loam and is slightly or moderately alkaline. It has few to many accumulations of carbonate. Some pedons have a C horizon which has colors and texture of the Bk horizon.
The Cr horizon is soft siltstone, sandstone, or loamy shales.
COMPETING SERIES: These are the Lambert soils in the same family. Lambert soils do not have bedrock between depths of 20 and 40 inches.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Lantry soils are on gently sloping to steep uplands. Slope gradients typically are 9 to 25 percent, but range from 2 to 35 percent. The soils formed in loamy residuum weathered from siltstones, sandstones, and loamy shales. Mean annual temperature ranges from 40 to 45 degrees F, and mean annual precipitation from 13 to 18 inches.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Amor, Cabba, Morton, Reeder, Sen, and Wayden soils. Amor, Morton, Reeder and Sen soils are on plane to concave slopes below the Lantry soils. Amor, Morton, and Reeder soils have a mollic epipedon and the Morton and Reeder soils have an argillic horizon. Cabba soils have bedrock at depths of less than 20 inches. Sen soils have a mollic epipedon. Cabba soils are on crests of ridges and knolls above the Lantry soils.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained. Runoff ranges from medium on sloping areas to high on steep areas. Permeability is moderate.
USE AND VEGETATION: Mainly for native range. Native vegetation is little bluestem, needleandthread, blue grama, sideoats grama, western wheatgrass, threadleaf sedge, and forbs.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: North-central South Dakota and possibly south central North Dakota. These soils are extensive.
MLRA SOIL SURVEY REGIONAL OFFICE (MO) RESPONSIBLE: Denver, Colorado

REMARKS: Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in this pedon are: ochric epipedon: the zone from the surface to a depth of about 4 inches (A horizon).
