TYPE LOCATION: Clearwater County, Minnesota; about 3 1/2 miles north and 3 1/2 miles east of Debs; 2400 feet south and 400 feet west of the northeast corner of section 25, T. 150 N., R. 36 W.; USGS Bagley Lake quadrangle; lat. 47 degrees 46 minutes 59 seconds N. and long. 95 degrees 11 minutes 43 seconds W., nad27
RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: Depth to free carbonates ranges from 18 to 60 inches. The rock fragment content is less than 15 percent throughout the profile. The soil moisture control section is not dry in any part for as long as 90 cumulative days in most years.
The A horizon has hue of 10YR, value of 2 to 4, and chroma of 1 or 2. Texture is fine sandy loam or sandy loam. Some pedons have an Ap horizon with dry value of 6 or more. Reaction is slightly acid or neutral.
The E horizon has hue of 10YR, value of 4 to 6, and chroma of 2 to 4. Texture is fine sand, loamy sand, loamy fine sand, sandy loam, or fine sandy loam. Reaction is moderately acid to neutral.
Some pedons have an E/B, B/E, or EB horizon. The elluvial part is less than 15 percent by volume.
The Bt horizon has hue of 10YR or 7.5YR, value of 3 to 5, and chroma of 3 or 4. Texture is fine sandy loam, loam, clay loam, or sandy clay loam with subhorizons of silty clay loam in some pedons. Clay content ranges from 18 to 35 percent. Reaction is slightly acid or neutral. Some pedons have a thin BC horizon.
The C horizon has hue of 2.5Y or 10YR, value of 5 to 7, and chroma of 2 to 4. Texture is stratified sand, coarse sand, fine sand, loamy sand, loamy fine sand, sandy loam, fine sandy loam, very fine sandy loam, loam, and silt loam. Stratification is variable but the sandy textures are dominant below a depth of 40 inches. Reaction is slightly or moderately alkaline.
COMPETING SERIES: These are the Alderon, Allens Park, Bayerton, Bondoe (T), Bonfri, Elbeth, Elmark (T), Fairport, Ferball (T), Foreleft, Gateson, Haugan, Lakoa, Lumpgulch (T), Nebish, Onaway, Plome, Regnaps, Rule (T), and Snellman series. Alderon, Allens Park, Bayerton, Bonfri, Elmark (T), Fairport, Gateson, Lumpgulch (T), and Rule (T) soils have a lithic or paralithic contact beginning within depths of 20 to 40 inches. Elbeth, Ferball (T), Onaway, and Plome soils do not have carbonates or stratified materials within the series control section. Bondoe (T), Haugan, Foreleft, Lakoa, and Regnaps, soils are dry in some or all parts of the soil moisture control section for more than 90 cumulative days in most years. Nebish and Snellman soils do not have stratified material within the series control section.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Lengby soils are on till plains, outwash plains, and lake plains. Slopes range from 1 to 35 percent. They formed in stratified sandy and silty deposits. Mean annual temperature ranges from 37 to 45 degrees F. Mean annual precipitation ranges from 20 to 28 inches. Frost-free days range from 90 to 130. Elevation above sea level ranges from 1000 to 1700 feet.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Andrusia, Balmlake, Debs, Morph, Rosy, Willosippi, and Zerkel soils. The well drained Andrusia and Balmlake soils are on nearby areas of coarser outwash and have less than 18 percent clay in the particle-size control section. The well drained Debs soils are fine-silty. The moderately well drained Rosy and Zerkel soils are on nearly level areas. The poorly drained Morph and Willosippi soils are in swales.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained. Runoff is moderately low to high. Permeability is moderate in the upper part and rapid in the substratum.
USE AND VEGETATION: Most of this soil is forested with the main species being quaking aspen, paper birch, American basswood, and sugar maple. Some areas are cropped to corn and small grain or are in pasture.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Northwestern Minnesota. This soil is moderately extensive.
MLRA SOIL SURVEY REGIONAL OFFICE (MO) RESPONSIBLE: St. Paul, Minnesota
