LINTON SERIES

The Linton series consists of very deep, well drained soils formed in loess on terraces and uplands. Permeability is moderate. Slopes range from 0 to 25 percent. Mean annual precipitation is about 16 inches, and mean annual temperature is about 43 degrees F.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Coarse-silty, mixed, superactive, frigid Typic Haplustolls

TYPICAL PEDON: Linton silt loam - on a 4 percent slope in cropland. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise stated)

Ap--0 to 7 inches; dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) silt loam, very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) moist; moderate fine granular structure; slightly hard, very friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; neutral; abrupt smooth boundary. (6 to 10 inches thick)

Bw1--7 to 14 inches; grayish brown (10YR 5/2) silt loam, very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) moist; weak medium prismatic structure parting to weak medium subangular blocky; slightly hard, very friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; many fine roots; common fine pores; slight effervescence; neutral; clear smooth boundary.

Bw2--14 to 17 inches; light brownish gray (2.5Y 6/2) silt loam, dark grayish brown (2.5Y 4/2) moist; weak medium prismatic structure; slightly hard, very friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; many fine roots; many fine pores; slight effervescence; slightly alkaline; clear boundary. (Combined Bw horizon 8 to 30 inches thick)

Bk--17 to 29 inches; light gray (2.5Y 7/2) silt loam, grayish brown (2.5Y 5/2) moist; weak coarse prismatic structure; slightly hard, very friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; common fine roots; common fine pores; common masses of carbonates; strong effervescence; slightly alkaline; clear boundary. (0 to 35 inches thick)

C--29 to 60 inches; light yellowish brown (2.5Y 6/4) silt loam, light olive brown (2.5Y 5/4) moist; massive; slightly hard, very friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; strong effervescence; slightly alkaline.

TYPE LOCATION: McLean County, North Dakota; about 8 miles northwest of Gateway; 1,250 feet east and 350 feet south of the northwest corner, sec. 26, T. 147 N., R. 84 W.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: Depth to carbonates ranges from 10 to 30 inches. The thickness of the mollic epipedon ranges from 7 to 16 inches.

The A horizon has hue of 10YR, value of 4 or 5 and 2 or 3 moist, and chroma of 1 to 3 dry and 2 or 3 moist. It is silt loam. It is neutral or slightly alkaline.

The Bw horizon has hue of 10YR or 2.5Y, value of 4 to 6 and 3 or 4 moist, and chroma of 2 or 3. It is silt loam. It has weak or moderate, medium or coarse prismatic structure that parts to medium or coarse subangular blocky. It is neutral or slightly alkaline.

The Bk horizon has hue of 10YR or 2.5Y, value of 5 to 7 and 4 to 7 moist, and chroma of 2 to 4. It is silt loam. It is slightly alkaline or moderately alkaline. Some pedons have a BCk horizon.

The C horizon has hue of 10YR or 2.5Y, value of 5 to 7 and 4 to 6 moist, and chroma of 2 to 4. It typically is silt loam but some pedons have coarser or finer texture below a depth of 40 inches. It is slightly alkaline or moderately alkaline.

COMPETING SERIES: There are no other series in the same family.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Linton soils are on level to moderately steep loess covered terraces and uplands. Slope ranges from 0 to 25 percent. The soil formed in calcareous loess containing a large amount of silt and very fine sand. Mean annual temperature ranges from 38 to 45 degrees F, and mean annual precipitation from 12 to 18 inches. Most of the precipitation comes in the spring and summer.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Grassna, Lambert, Mandan and Temvik soils. Grassna and Mandan soils are in shallow concave swales and smooth lower lying areas. They have a mollic epipedon more than 16 inches thick. Lambert soils are on nearby steep slopes and crests of hills. They do not have a mollic epipedon. Temvik soils are on higher lying till plains where the loess thickness is 26 to 40 inches.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained. Surface runoff is slow or medium. Permeability is moderate.

USE AND VEGETATION: Mostly cropped to small grains, corn, and flax. Some areas are used for hay and pasture. Native vegetation is western wheatgrass, needleandthread, threadleaf sedge, blue grama, grass and forbs.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Central and southern North Dakota and northern South Dakota, mainly adjacent to the Missouri River Valley. The series is of moderate extent.

MLRA SOIL SURVEY REGIONAL OFFICE (MO) RESPONSIBLE: St. Paul, Minnesota

SERIES ESTABLISHED: Burleigh County, North Dakota, 1971.

REMARKS: Revised 3/94.

Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in this pedon are: mollic epipedon - the zone from the surface of the soil to a depth of 14 inches (Ap and Bw1 horizons); cambic horizon - the zone from 14 to 17 inches (Bw2 horizon).
