LUBBOCK SERIES

The Lubbock series consists of deep, well drained soils that formed in loess over alluvium. They occur on nearly level to slightly depressional areas on paleoterraces of the Central High Tableland (MLRA 72). Slope gradients range from 0 to 1 percent. Mean annual precipitation is 48 centimeters (19 inches), and mean annual temperature is 12 C degrees (54 degrees F).

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine, mixed, superactive, mesic Pachic Argiustolls

TYPICAL PEDON: Lubbock silty clay loam on a linear, 0 percent slope in cropland at an elevation of 853 meters (2799 feet). (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise stated.)

Bt1--23 to 46 centimeters (9 to 18 inches); dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) silty clay loam, very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) moist; moderate fine and medium subangular blocky structure; hard, firm; many fine roots; faint patchy clay films, moderately alkaline; gradual smooth boundary.

Bt2--46 to 61 centimeters (18 to 24 inches); dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) silty clay loam, very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) moist; moderate medium subangular blocky structure; hard, firm; common fine roots; faint patchy clay films; moderately alkaline; clear smooth boundary. (Combined thickness of the Bt horizon ranges from 30 to 61 centimeters (12 to 47 inches))

Bk--61 to 107 centimeters (24 to 42 inches); grayish brown (10YR 5/2) silty clay loam, dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) moist; weak medium subangular blocky structure; hard, friable; few fine roots; common accumulations of lime in fine soft rounded masses; slight effervescence; moderately alkaline; gradual smooth boundary. (30 to 61 centimeters (12 to 24 inches) thick)

C--107 to 130 centimeters (42 to 51 inches); light brownish gray (10YR 6/2) silty clay loam, dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) moist; weak medium granular structure to massive; hard, friable; common accumulations of lime in fine soft rounded masses; slight effervescence; moderately alkaline; clear smooth boundary. (15 to 41 centimeters (6 to 16 inches) thick)

Ab--130 to 200 centimeters (51 to 79 inches); gray (10YR 5/1) silt loam, very dark gray (10YR 3/1) moist; weak medium granular structure to massive; hard, friable; few soft masses of lime; strong effervescence; moderately alkaline.

TYPE LOCATION: Haskell County, Kansas; about 27 kilometers (17 miles) northeast of Sublette (general location); 152 meters (500 feet) north and 30 meters (100 feet) east of the southwest corner of sec. 13, T. 27 S., R. 31 W. (Public Land Survey location); USGS Copeland NW topographic quadrangle; 4173193 meters North and 352752 meters East (UTM zone 14N NAD83 meters); latitude 37 degrees 41 minutes 38.92 seconds North and longitude 100 degrees 40 minutes 12.59 seconds West (NAD83).

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS:
Soil moisture regime: ustic
Soil temperature regime: mesic
Mean annual soil temperature: 11 to 13 C degrees (52 to 55 degrees F)
Particle-size control section: 35 to 59 percent clay
Depth to bedrock: greater than 200 centimeters (79 inches)
Depth to free carbonates ranges from 20 to 100 centimeters (8 to 39 inches)
Thickness of the mollic epipedon ranges from 51 to 91 centimeters (20 to 36 inches) and typically includes the entire Bt horizon.

Ap horizon:

Reaction: neutral to moderately alkaline.

Bt horizon or Btky where present:
Hue: 7.5YR to 2.5Y
Value: 3 to 5 and 2 to 4 moist
Chroma: 1 or 2
Texture: silty clay loam, clay loam, silty clay or clay averaging between 35 and 45 percent clay
Reaction: neutral to moderately alkaline.

Bk horizon or Bky where present:
Hue: 10YR or 2.5Y
Value: 4 to 6 and 3 or 4 moist

The Ab horizon is not found in some pedons.

COMPETING SERIES: These are the Conchovar, Irwin, Knifehill, Millpaw, Nutreeah, Ruidoso, and Tully soils.
Conchovar soils have a water table within 50 centimeters (20 inches) of the mineral soil surface.
Knifehill, Millpaw, Nutreeah, and Ruidoso soils are drier in the moisture control section during May and June.
Irwin soils are wetter in the moisture control section during June and July.
Tully soils have carbonates at greater depths.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING:
Parent material: loess over alluvium
Landform: Nearly level to slightly depressional areas on paleoterraces on tableland
Slopes: Typically range from 0 to 1 percent
Mean annual precipitation: 36 to 66 centimeters (14 to 26 inches)
Mean annual air temperature: 10 to 14 C degrees (50 to 57 degrees F)
Frost Free Period: 135 to 210 days
Thornthwaite Annual P-E Index ranges from 28 to 44.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Harney, Ness, Richfield, and Ulysses.
Harney, Richfield and Ulysses soils have mollic epipedons less than 50 centimeters (20 inches) thick and are slightly higher on the landscape
Ness soils are poorly drained and are lower on the landscape.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY:
Drainage: Well drained
Runoff: Low or negligible
Saturated Hydraulic Conductivity: Moderately high

USE AND VEGETATION: Lubbock soils are cropped to wheat and sorghum. Native vegetation is mid and short grasses.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Western and south central Kansas. The soil is moderately extensive.

MLRA SOIL SURVEY REGIONAL OFFICE (MO) RESPONSIBLE: Denver, Colorado

SERIES ESTABLISHED: Hockley County, Texas, 1941.

REMARKS: Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in this pedon are:
Mollic epipedon: The zone from 0 to 61 centimeters (0 to 24 inches) (A, Bt1, Bt2 horizons)
Argillic horizon: The zone from 23 to 61 centimeters (9 to 24 inches) (Bt1, Bt2 horizons)
These soils have a loess cap over loess-affected alluvium.
The classification of mixed mineralogy is presumed from the morphology of the series.
A saline phase is used in Kearny and Grant counties of Kansas, and these areas were formerly mapped Church.
