TULLY SERIES


The Tully series consists of very deep, well drained soils that formed in colluvium. Tully soils are on footslopes of hillslopes of uplands in Bluestem Hills, MLRA 76. Slopes range from 1 to 15 percent. Mean annual precipitation is about 890 millimeters (35 inches) and the mean annual temperature is about 13 degrees C (55 degrees F).

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine, mixed, superactive, mesic Pachic Argiustolls

TYPICAL PEDON: Tully silty clay loam, concave, convex, 8 percent slope in grassland at an elevation of 354 meters (1,160 feet). (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise stated.) Described on January 1, 1969.

A--0 to 25 centimeters (0 to 10 inches); very dark gray (10YR 3/1) silty clay loam, black (10YR 2/1) moist; 3 percent sand; 36 percent clay; moderate fine and medium granular structure; hard, friable, sticky and plastic; many roots; few worm casts; slightly acid; clear smooth boundary. (18 to 36 centimeters (7 to 14 inches) thick)

BA--25 to 41 centimeters (10 to 16 inches); very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) silty clay, very dark brown (10YR 2/2) moist; 2 percent sand; 45 percent clay; moderate fine and very fine subangular blocky structure; very hard, firm, sticky and plastic; many fine roots throughout; few worm casts; 2 to 5 percent by volume of gravel, mostly chert pebbles that are less than 1/2 inch in diameter; moderately acid; clear smooth boundary. (10 to 25 centimeters (4 to 10 inches) thick)

Bt1--41 to 71 centimeters (16 to 28 inches); dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) silty clay, very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) moist; 3 percent sand; 48 percent clay; moderate fine blocky structure; very hard, firm, very sticky and very plastic; many distinct clay films on faces of peds; common fine roots throughout; few fine black concretions; 2 to 5 percent by volume of gravel, mostly chert pebbles that are less than 1/2 inch in diameter; slightly acid; gradual smooth boundary.

Bt2--71 to 109 centimeters (28 to 43 inches); grayish brown (10YR 5/2) silty clay, dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) moist; 4 percent sand; 47 percent clay; few distinct faint yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) mottles; moderate medium blocky structure parting to weak fine and very fine blocky; very hard, firm, very sticky and very plastic; many distinct clay films on faces of peds; few fine roots throughout; few fine black concretions; 2 to 5 percent by volume of gravel, mostly chert pebbles less than one inch in diameter; slightly alkaline; gradual boundary. (Combined thickness of the Bt horizons 50 to 100 centimeters (20 to 40 inches) thick)

BC--109 to 130 centimeters (43 to 51 inches); brown (10YR 5/3) silty clay loam, brown (10YR 4/3) moist; 4 percent sand; 37 percent clay; few fine faint yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) mottles; weak fine blocky structure; very hard, firm, very sticky and very plastic; few fine black concretions; 2 to 5 percent chert pebbles less than 1/2 inch in diameter; slightly alkaline; gradual boundary. (0 to 30 centimeters (0 to 12 inches) thick)

C--130 to 183 centimeters (51 to 72 inches); brown (7.5YR 4/4) silty clay, reddish brown (5YR 4/4) moist; 6 percent sand; 45 percent clay; few medium faint reddish brown (5YR 5/4) mottles; massive; very hard, firm, very plastic and very sticky; few fine black concretions; 2 to 5 percent by volume of gravel, mostly chert pebbles that are less than 1/2 inch in diameter; slightly alkaline.

TYPE LOCATION: Riley County, Kansas; about 10 kilometer (6 miles) southeast of Manhattan; 494 meters (1,610 feet) east and 713 meters (2,340 feet) north of the southwest corner of sec. 11, T. 11 S., R. 8 E. Wamego SW, Kansas USGS quadrangle; latitude 39 degrees 6 minutes 28.68 seconds N. and longitude 96 degrees 29 minutes 42.43 seconds W. NAD 83.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS:
Soil moisture: The soil moisture control section is intermittently moist in some part from March through October; driest in November through February; ustic moisture regime bordering on udic
Mean annual soil temperature: 13 to 14 degrees C (55 to 58 degrees F)
Mollic epipedon: 50 to more than 100 centimeters (20 to more than 40 inches)
Depth to free carbonates: 76 to more than 150 centimeters (30 to more than 60 inches)
Particle size control section (weighted average) clay: 40 to 55 percent
Particle size control section (weighted average) sand: 1 to 20 percent

A horizon:
Hue: 10YR or 7.5YR
Value: 3 to 5 dry, 2 or 3 moist
Chroma: 1 to 3
Texture: silty clay loam or their gravelly counterparts
Clay content: 27 to 39 percent
Sand content: 1 to 20 percent
Rock fragments: 0 to 34 percent, limestone gravel
Reaction: moderately acid to neutral

BA horizon:
Hue: 10YR or 7.5YR
Value: 3 to 5 dry, 2 or 3 moist
Chroma: 1 to 3
Texture: silty clay loam or silty clay or their gravelly counterparts
Clay content: 27 to 46 percent.
Sand content: 1 to 20 percent
Rock fragments: 0 to 34 percent, limestone gravel
Reaction: moderately acid to neutral

Bt horizon:
Hue: 10YR or 7.5YR
Value: 4 to 6 dry, 3 to 5 moist
Chroma: 2 to 4
Texture: silty clay loam, clay, silty clay, or their gravelly counterparts.
Clay content: 40 to 55 percent.
Sand content: 1 to 20 percent
Rock fragments: 0 to 34 percent, limestone gravel
Reaction: moderately acid to neutral in the upper part and slightly acid to moderately alkaline in the lower part.

BC or C horizon:
Hue: 10YR, to 5YR
value: 4 to 6 dry, 3 to 5 moist
Chroma: 2 to 6
Texture: silty clay, clay, silty clay loam, or their gravelly counterparts.
Clay content: 35 to 55 percent.
Sand content: 1 to 20 percent
Rock fragments: 0 to 34 percent, limestone gravel
Reaction: neutral to moderately alkaline.

COMPETING SERIES: These are the Conchovar, Irwin, Knifehill, Lubbock, Millpaw, Nutreeah, and Ruidoso series.
Conchovar soils have redoximorphic features occurring between 50 and 100 centimeters (20 to 40 inches)(somewhat poorly drained).
Irwin soils have horizons with 40 percent or more clay within depths of 35 centimeters (14 inches).
Knifehill, Lubbock, Millpaw and Ruidoso soils are drier in the soil moisture control section during May to July.
Nutreeah soils have an accumulation of salts between 50 to 89 centimeters (20 to 35 inches).

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING:
Landscape: upland
Landforms: foot slopes on hillslopes
Slopes: 1 to 15 percent.
Parent material: colluvium
Elevation: 300 to 505 meters (980 to 1660 feet)
Mean annual precipitation: 790 to 960 millimeters (31 to 38 inches)
Mean annual temperature: 12 to 14 degrees C. (53 to 57 degrees F.)
Precipitation pattern: Precipitation is usually evenly distributed throughout the year with the exception of November through February being the driest months and May and June being the wettest months. Summer precipitation occurs during intense summer thunderstorms.
Frost-free period: 175 to 200 days

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Clime, Florence, Ivan, Kipson, Reading, and Sogn Soils.
Clime, Florence, Kipson, and Sogn soils are formed in residuum on steeper slopes adjacent to Tully soils.
Clime soils are moderately deep over shale.
Kipson soils is shallow over shale.
Sogn soils are shallow over limestone.
Florence soils are clayey-skeletal and are deep over limestone.
Ivan and Reading are fine-silty soils on flood plains below the Tully soils.

DRAINAGE AND SATURATED HYDRAULIC CONDUCTIVITY:
Drainage: well drained
Runoff: medium to very high.
Saturated hydraulic conductivity: low

USE AND VEGETATION: The larger, less sloping areas are mostly cultivated.
Wheat, sorghum, alfalfa, and corn are the principal crops.
The smaller and steeper areas are mostly used as rangeland.
Native vegetation is tall-grass prairie.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Central to east-central Kansas; Land Resource Region H, Central Great Plains Winter Wheat and Range region; MLRA 76 Bluestem Hills. The series is extensive; about 300,000 acres.
