MISSLER SERIES

The Missler series consists of deep, well drained, moderately slowly permeable soils that formed in fine-textured calcareous sediments. These soils are on uplands and have slopes ranging from 0 to 6 percent. Mean annual temperature is 57 degrees F, and mean annual precipitation is 20 inches.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine, mixed, active, thermic Typic Haplustolls

TYPICAL PEDON: Missler silty clay loam - in a nearly level cultivated field. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise stated.)

A1--0 to 13 inches; gray (10YR 5/1) silty clay loam, very dark brown (10YR 2/2) moist; weak medium granular structure; slightly hard, friable; few fine roots; mildly alkaline; gradual smooth boundary. (7 to 15 inches thick)

B2--13 to 24 inches; grayish brown (10YR 5/2) silty clay loam, dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) moist; moderate medium granular structure; hard, firm; few fine roots and pores; few worm casts; slight effervescence; moderately alkaline; gradual smooth boundary. (7 to 20 inches thick)

C--24 to 60 inches; pale brown (10YR 6/3) silty clay loam, brown (10YR 5/3) moist; weak medium granular structure; hard, firm; many pores; few threads of lime; strong effervescence; moderately alkaline.

TYPE LOCATION: Meade County, Kansas; about 2 miles west and 1.5 miles north of Fowler, Kansas; 1,320 feet west and 660 feet north of the southwest corner of sec. 26, T. 30 S., R. 27 W.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: The thickness of the solum ranges from 15 to 35 inches. Depth to free carbonates ranges from 7 to 20 inches. The thickness of the mollic epipedon ranges from 7 to 20 inches. The soil typically is mildly alkaline or moderately alkaline throughout, but a few pedons are neutral in the upper 7 inches.

The A horizon has hue of 10YR, value of 4 or 5 and 2 or 3 moist, and chroma of 1 to 3. It commonly is silty clay loam and less commonly clay loam.

The B2 horizon has hue of 10YR, value of 4 to 6 and 3 to 5 moist, and chroma of 2 or 3. It is silty clay loam or silty clay with 35 to 45 percent clay.

The C horizon has hue of 10YR, value of 5 to 7 and 4 to 6 moist, and chroma of 2 or 3. It is silty clay loam or silty clay.

COMPETING SERIES: There are no other series in this family. Competing series in other families are the Harney, Lubbock, Mansic, Penden, Roxbury, and Uly series. Harney, Lubbock, Penden, Roxbury, and Uly soils are mesic. In addition, Harney and Lubbock soils have argillic horizons; and Roxbury and Uly soils are fine-silty. Mansic and Penden soils are fine-loamy and have a calcic horizon.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: The Missler soils are on uplands. The slope gradient ranges from 0 to 6 percent. The soils formed in calcareous fine-textured sediments. The mean annual temperature ranges from 57 to 60 degrees F, and the mean annual precipitation ranges from 18 to 22 inches. Thornthwaite annual P-E index ranges from 30 to 38.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Harney, Mansic, Ness, Penden, Roxbury, and Uly soils. Harney, Mansic, and Uly soils are on higher positions in the landscape on similar slopes. Ness soils have a more clayey solum and are in shallow upland depressions. Penden soils are on steeper slopes. Roxbury soils are on nearby flood plains.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained. Surface runoff is slow on the lower slope and medium on the more sloping areas. Permeability is moderately slow.

USE AND VEGETATION: Most areas are cultivated. Winter wheat and grain sorghum are the principal crops. Native vegetation is dominated by short and mid grasses.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Southwestern Kansas and possibly areas in northwestern Oklahoma. The soil is moderately extensive with about 14,000 acres.
