MOINGONA SERIES


The Moingona series consists of very deep, moderately well drained soils formed in loamy local alluvium and colluvium. These soils are on foot slopes and alluvial fans. Slope ranges from 0 to 18 percent. Mean annual air temperature is about 8 degrees C. Mean annual precipitation is about 740 millimeters.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine-loamy, mixed, superactive, mesic Typic Argiudolls

TYPICAL PEDON: Moingona loam, on a west-facing, linear slope of 8 percent, in a cultivated field. (Colors are for moist soil unless otherwise stated.)

Ap--0 to 18 centimeters; very dark brown (10YR 2/2) loam, very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) dry; moderate fine subangular blocky structure parting to weak medium granular; friable; common very fine roots; moderately acid; clear smooth boundary.

A--18 to 30 centimeters; very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) loam, dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) dry; moderate fine subangular blocky structure; friable; few very fine roots; slightly acid; clear smooth boundary. (Combined thickness of the A horizon is 25 to 49 centimeters.)

Bt1--30 to 41 centimeters; brown (10YR 4/3) loam; moderate medium subangular blocky structure; friable; few very fine random roots; common distinct clay films on faces of peds; gray (10YR 6/1) uncoated fine sand and silt on faces of peds; moderately acid; clear smooth boundary.

Bt2--41 to 51 centimeters; brown (10YR 4/3) clay loam; moderate medium subangular blocky structure; friable; few very fine roots; common distinct clay films on faces of peds, on surfaces along pores, and as bridges of sand grains; moderately acid; gradual smooth boundary.

Bt3--51 to 69 centimeters; brown (10YR 4/3) clay loam; moderate medium angular blocky structure; friable; few very fine roots; common distinct clay films on faces of peds and on surfaces along pores; slightly acid; gradual smooth boundary.

Bt4--69 to 86 centimeters; dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4) clay loam; moderate medium subangular blocky structure; friable; common distinct clay films on faces of peds, on surfaces along pores, and as bridges of sand grains; neutral; gradual smooth boundary.

Bt5--86 to 102 centimeters; brown (10YR 4/3) clay loam; weak medium subangular blocky structure; friable; common distinct clay films on faces of peds, on surfaces along pores, and as bridges of sand grains; neutral; gradual smooth boundary. (Combined thickness of the Bt horizon is 45 to 100 centimeters.)

C1--102 to 122 centimeters; brown (10YR 4/3) loam; massive; friable; few fine prominent strong brown (7.5YR 5/6) redoximorphic concentrations; slightly effervescent; moderately alkaline; clear smooth boundary. (15 to 25 centimeters thick)

C2--122 to 152 centimeters; olive brown (2.5Y 4/4) loam; massive; friable; few fine prominent strong brown (7.5YR 5/6) redoximorphic concentrations; slightly effervescent; moderately alkaline.

TYPE LOCATION: Major Land Resource Area (MLRA) 103-Central Iowa and Minnesota Till Prairies, Boone County, Iowa subset; about 2 miles north and 2.5 miles west of Ridgeport; located about 1,790 feet west and 2,140 feet north of the southeast corner of section 11, T. 85 N., R. 27 W.; USGS Fraser topographic quadrangle; lat. 42 degrees 11 minutes 13 seconds N. and long. 93 degrees 57 minutes 27 seconds W.; NAD 83.

Spillville--are at lower landscape positions on foot slopes and floodplains, have a mollic epipedon 100 to 150 centimeters thick, and do not have an argillic horizon
Storden--are at higher landscape positions on side slopes and do not have a mollic epipedon

DRAINAGE AND SATURATED HYDRAULIC CONDUCTIVITY:
Drainage class--moderately well drained--a frequently saturated zone occurs within depths of 1.2 to 1.8 meters during the wettest periods of years when precipitation is within one standard deviation of the 30 year mean of annual precipitation and is considered apparent
Saturated hydraulic conductivity--1.00 to 10.00 micrometers per second

USE AND VEGETATION:
Most areas are cultivated. The principal crops are corn, soybeans, oats, and hay on the nearly level and gently sloping areas. Moderately and strongly sloping areas are mainly improved or native grass pasture. The native vegetation is mixed big bluestem, little bluestem, switchgrass, other grasses of the tall grass prairie and deciduous trees.
