MOLAWA SERIES
The Molawa series consists of very deep, well drained soils that formed in glacial deposits and volcanic ash. The rock fragments consist of andesite, scoriaceous cinders and basalt. Molawa soils are on glaciated hillslopes and have slopes of 0 to 12 percent. The mean annual precipitation is about 40 inches and the mean annual temperature is about 42 degrees F.

COMPETING SERIES: These are the
Cruiser,
Keel,
Oneonta and
Soosap series. The Cruiser soil has lower glass content and lower bulk density. The Keel series is moderately deep to bedrock. The Oneonta series has an umbric epipedon. The Soosap series is moderately deep to a paralithic contact.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: The Molawa soils are on mountains, volcanic cones and ridges at elevations ranging from 4,100 to 6,500 feet. These soils formed in very deep glacial deposits. The climate is humid with an annual precipitation of 30 to 50 inches. It occurs mainly in winter and spring. The mean January temperature is 39 to 45 degrees F. The frost-free period is 10 to 50 days. Slopes range from 0 to 12 percent.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the
Oatman,
Llaorock,
Otwin,
Woodcock and
Pokegema soils. Oatman soils are skeletal. Woodcock soils have an argillic horizon, a xeric soil moisture regime and a frigid temperature regime. Pokegema soils have a xeric soil moisture regime and frigid temperature regime. Otwin soils are moderately deep. Llaorock soils are in a vitric subgroup.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; moderate permeability.
USE AND VEGETATION: Timber, wildlife habitat and recreation. Overstory vegetation is white fir, Shasta red fir and western white pine; understory vegetation is mountain brome, western prince's pine and sedge.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Cascade Mountains in southern Oregon; MLRA 3. The soils are moderately extensive.
