TYPE LOCATION: Skagit County, Washington; about 1,300 feet south and 2,510 feet west of the northeast corner sec. 1, T. 36 N., R. 8 E.
RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: The mean annual soil temperature is estimated to range from 47 to 50 degrees F. Clay content in the control section averages from 18 to 32 percent. Rock fragments in the control section average 0 to 5 percent by volume.
The A horizon has hue of 10YR through 5Y, value of 3 through 5 moist, 5 through 8 dry, and chroma of 1 through 3 moist and dry.
The B2 horizon has hue of 2.5Y or 5Y, value of 5 or 6 moist, 7 or 8 dry, and chroma of 2 or 3 moist and dry. Texture is silt loam or silty clay loam. Reaction is strongly acid or moderately acid. Some pedons have lenses of very fine sand.
The C horizon has colors, textures and reaction like the B2 horizon, but is massive.
COMPETING SERIES: There are no competing series.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Mundt soils are on canyon sides and terrace escarpments at elevations from 400 to 1,100 feet. Slopes are 45 to 75 percent. They formed in glaciolacustrine sediments. The average annual precipitation ranges from 65 to 85 inches. The mean January temperature is about 36 degrees F., mean July temperature is about 64 degrees F., and mean annual temperature is 45 to 48 degrees F. The frost-free season is 160 to 180 days.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Barneston, Rinker, Skiyou, and Tokul soils and the competing Saxon soils. These soils have less than 18 percent clay in the control section. Barneston soils are sandy-skeletal. Rinker soils are loamy0skeletal and are underlain by phyllite at 20 to 40 inches. Skiyou soils are medial over loamy- skeletal. Tokul soils have a duripan at 20 to 40 inches.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Moderately well drained; medium or rapid runoff; moderately slow permeability.
USE AND VEGETATION: Used for forest and watershed. Native vegetation is Douglas-fir, western hemlock, western redcedar, red alder, vine maple, western swordfern, salal, trailing blackberry, and red elderberry.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: West slopes of the Cascade Mountains in north- western Washington; MLRA 3. This soil is of small extent.
MLRA SOIL SURVEY REGIONAL OFFICE (MO) RESPONSIBLE: Portland, Oregon
SERIES ESTABLISHED: Skagit County, Washington, 1981.
REMARKS: Diagnostic horizons and features in this pedon include:
Ochric epipedon
Cambic horizon - from 7 to 33 inches (Bw horizon)
All depths to diagnostic horizons and features within the range of characteristics, are measured from the top of the first mineral horizon.
