NAHUNTA SERIES

The Nahunta series consists of nearly level, somewhat poorly drained soils on Coastal Plain uplands. They have formed in loamy and silty marine sediments. Slopes range from 0 to 2 percent.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine-silty, siliceous, subactive, thermic Aeric Paleaquults

TYPICAL PEDON: Nahunta very fine sandy loam--cultivated.
(Colors are for moist soil unless otherwise stated.)

Ap--0 to 8 inches; dark gray (10YR 4/1) very fine sandy loam; weak medium granular structure; very friable; many fine roots; medium acid; abrupt smooth boundary. (5 to 10 inches thick)

E--8 to 12 inches; pale brown (10YR 6/3) very fine sandy loam; weak medium granular structure; very friable; many fine roots; strongly acid; clear wavy boundary. (0 to 5 inches thick)

BE--12 to 15 inches; pale yellow (2.5Y 7/4) loam; common medium distinct grayish brown (10YR 5/2) mottles; moderate medium granular structure; friable, slightly sticky and plastic; common fine roots; strongly acid; gradual wavy boundary. (0 to 5 inches thick)

Bt--15 to 22 inches; brownish yellow (10YR 6/6) clay loam; many medium distinct light gray (10YR 7/1) mottles; weak medium subangular blocky structure; friable, slightly sticky and plastic; few fine roots; thin discontinuous clay films on faces of peds and in pores; very strongly acid; gradual wavy boundary. (5 to 10 inches thick)

Btg1--22 to 40 inches; light gray (10YR 6/1) clay loam; common
medium distinct brownish yellow (10YR 6/6) mottles; weak medium subangular blocky structure; friable, slightly sticky and plastic; thin discontinuous clay films on faces of peds and in pores; very strongly acid; gradual wavy boundary. (11 to 20 inches thick)

Btg2--40 to 65 inches; light gray (10YR 7/1) clay loam; common
medium distinct brownish yellow (10YR 6/6) and prominent red (2.5YR 4/8) mottles; weak fine subangular blocky structure; firm, sticky and plastic; few medium pores; few discontinuous clay films on faces of peds and in pores; very strongly acid; gradual wavy boundary. (17 to 30 inches thick)

BCg--65 to 79 inches; light gray (10YR 7/1) clay loam; many coarse distinct brownish yellow (10YR 6/6) and prominent dark red (2.5YR 3/6) mottles; massive; firm, sticky and plastic; few red nodules and soft red bodies; strongly acid.

TYPE LOCATION: Wayne County, North Carolina; 200 feet southwest of junction of west South Street in Fremont and County Road 1342.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: Loamy textures extend from 60 to more than 80 inches. Depth to hard rock is greater than 20 feet. The soil is strongly acid through extremely acid, except where limed.

The Ap or A1 horizon has hue of 10YR or 2.5Y, value of 2 to 5, chroma of 1 or 2. The A horizon is very fine sandy loam, loam, or silt loam.

The E horizon, has hue of 10YR or 2.5Y, value of 5 to 7, chroma of 2 to 4. The E horizon is very fine sandy loam, loam, or silt loam.

The BA or BE horizons, where present, have hue of 7.5YR to 2.5Y, value of 5 0r 6, and chroma of 3 to 8. They are very fine sandy loam, loam, or silt loam.

The Bt horizon has hue of 7.5YR to 2.5Y, value of 5 or 6, and chroma of 3 through 8. There are few to many mottles of chroma 2 or less. The Btg horizon has hue of 10YR, to 5Y, or is neutral, value of 5 to 7, chroma of 0 to 2. There are common to many mottles in shades of red through yellow. The Bt and Btg horizons are clay loam, loam, silt loam, or silty clay loam. The upper 20 inches of this horizon contains more than 30 percent silt, and the sand fraction is dominantly very fine. Some pedons have a few brown to red concretions.

The BCg horizon is neutral or has hue of 10YR or 2.5Y, value of 5 to 7, and chroma of 0 or 2. Mottles are in shades of brown, red, or yellow. It is clay loam , silt loam, silty clay loam, or loam.

The Cg horizon, where present, is neutral or has hue of 10YR to 5Y, value of 5 to 7, and chroma of 0 to 2, or it is mottled in shades of brown, red, yellow, or gray. It is variable in texture, consisting of typically consisting of layers of loamy or clayey sediments of variable thickness.

COMPETING SERIES: (This section not checked this date; added activity class) Tomast series is the only series in the same family. Augusta, Dunbar, Exum, Grantham, Lenoir, Lynchburg, Summerfield, and Trebloc series are in closely related families. Augusta and Lynchburg soils have less than 30 percent silt and more medium sand in the argillic horizons. Dunbar and Lenoir soils have Bt horizons that contain more than 35 percent clay. Exum soils have better drainage. Grantham and Trebloc soils have poorer drainage. Summerfield soils are bisequal and have clayey 2B horizons. Tomast soils have hues redder than the 10YR in the Bt horizons.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Nahunta soils are on nearly level surfaces in the Coastal Plain. Slopes are generally less than 2 percent. They formed in loamy and silty Coastal Plain sediments. Mean annual temperature is about 63 degrees F. near the type location and mean annual precipitation is 45 to 55 inches.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: In addition to the competing Dunbar, Exum, Grantham, Lynchburg, and Trebloc series, these include Aycock and Norfolk series. Aycock and Norfolk soils are well drained.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Somewhat poorly drained; slow runoff; moderate permeability.

USE AND VEGETATION: About one-half of the total acreage is in cultivation, with the remainder in pasture and forest. Crops grown are corn, soybeans, truck crops, and small grain. The forest are mainly loblolly pine and mixed hardwoods.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Coastal Plain of Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. The series is of large extent.

MLRA SOIL SURVEY REGIONAL OFFICE (MO) RESPONSIBLE: Raleigh, North Carolina

SERIES ESTABLISHED: Pitt County, North Carolina; 1969.

REMARKS: Nahunta soils were formerly included with the Dunbar, Lynchburg, and Bertie series.

The date of this revision is May 26, 1988.

Diagnostic horizons recognized in this pedon are:

Ochric epipedon - the zone from 0 to 8 inches (Ap and E horizons).

Argillic horizon - the zone from 15 to 65 inches (Bt,Btg1, Btg2 horizons).
